Thanks for the reminder.
One pair still rattling around: Spirit Of Chetwynd and Spirit of Tumbler Ridge. TR is a ghost town today, but its Spirit still haunts Vancouver rails. The one that always made me chuckle was the SPIRIT of HOPE!

After my daughter heard the names of the new ferries on Thursday night... she got a fever that lasted 2 or 3 days, she was cranky, she refused to eat very much, and she kept us up at night and in the middle of the night screaming!!! Coincidentally, her two front teeth are coming in (now she won't look like a little vampire anymore)... but that hasn't seemed to be bothering her!

"The one that always made me chuckle was the SPIRIT of HOPE!"
[Obvious joke] Too bad some tiny Fraser Canyon communities (Emory Creek, Spuzzum, Alexandria) couldn't have had a car named "Beyond Hope" [groan...]

Dane: Thanks for the Tumbler Ridge update.
I haven't been paying attention; perhaps the explosion in oil prices has made Rocky Mountain coal worth getting again (though it was intended for steel-making).
Too bad we tore up the costly electrified BC Rail line a few years ago ...

Too bad we tore up the costly electrified BC Rail line a few years ago ... The Tumbler Ridge Subdivision is still in place and AFAIK still in operation. Although the wires have been removed and the juice has been shut off. We're(CN) using ordinary Diesel Electric locomotives on the line now.

Hello, here ... Europe calling ! So.. my comment comes from far away, and well, we do have our "Queen´s" and "King´s" for sure, as well all other sort of characters like ferries called Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan, Normandie and Pont Aven, and much more.
THE NEW NAMES SUCK ! Aren´t you ashammed ? (goes to the head of the BCF - company).
What I like about ferry-names is, that they either do have a history within a ferry company, like our TT-Line always naming them either Nils H. or Peter P., some name them after regions, others use names of their royals.
But, there does go on a quite awful trend, for some years now, to give totally boring and meaningless names to ships ! I mean, you have a "Destiny" here, a "Glory" there, a whatever "Inspiration" and "Celebration" and it means - nothing. There are even a few of these out there, well not exactly the same but you heard one, and they sound all the same.
As a total outsider here, I still can´t be quiet and I just say - I just like the names, which refer to places in BC ! There can be argued whether it sounds nice or not, or whether an inland place´s name should be given to a ferry. But, it does show the places, the ferries go, and the regions, the ferries do belong to. The ships are a part of the regions idendity right ? Hm.. so, I don´t mind the "Spirit of" - sounds quite nice, and I wouldn´t mind a "City of Vancouver" etc. either or a "Granville Island" even one named "Frazier River" would have been better than that.
Well, of course we can´t do anything, but I hope that not yet more companies will follow this rather stupid trend and especially I hope that the Washington State Ferries keep their nice traditional indian names !

Horrible, absouletly horrible. Jazzophone and Queen of Burnaby Teen, your names where much better then Coastal Renaissance, Inspiration and Celebration.
Here are the results the CFAX poll.
# Answer Votes % 1 Great! I wish I'd been the one to think of them 75 15% 2 Not my first choice, but I can live with them 55 11% 3 Completely uninspired. I'd far rather they name the ships after British Columbia people or places 382 75% Total: 512 100%
But the way you guys talk about it you'd think it was a cheap election. I mean they chose those names now and there is no going back, no matter how much we wish.
As for corporation names here are a few more: Spirit of Costco, Queen of Cobs Bread Bakery, Queen of (choose a radio station) Spirit of Sears and Spirit of Kins Market.

Queen of Starbucks - An good bet for the name of the ferry that will replace the Queen of Prince Rupert. It will be a real hit with the people of Haida Gwaii.

I just find it amazing how Starbucks is popping up everywhere. Even the re-modelled Safeway stores have them.

In Manhatten, you can find them every block, literally, and each one will have a huge line-up.

Speaking of fast food joints in stores...we can easily tell Wal-Mart is American because of the presence of a McDonald's in many of their stores....

Yeah.. Have you noticed? BC Ferries is now acquiring the rights from Starbucks to have their coffee appear on the menu at the Coastal Cafe Express?
Thier coffee is highly despised throughout my family, however, their Frappacinos are quite tasty.

Yes, at Massett (QCI) there is a coffee shop called Haidabucks. Starbucks attempted to drag them into court to stop them from aledgedly infringing upon their good name. In response another coffee shop in Queen Charlotte City named Chubbies renamed themselves Chubbybucks. After much very negative publicity Starbucks abandoned their grand little adventure.
Those of us living on BC's North Coast could have boycotted them but its hardly necessary seeing as the nearest Starbucks is either a days travel to Prince George, or down the coast to Vancouver Island. I go out of my way to avoid them.
A serious name for the QPR's replacement however might be Spirit of Haidabucks.

Oh, sorry for bringing the whole thread off course !!! But though since we are on the way already why not continue and see where it ends (at a Starbucks?) I personally haven´t seen they have problems here, always full and to be honest for a really big chain they keep the interior of the place so that you don´t feel you are in a fast-food place. I have though, never been thinking of Mac D. S-B and other American fast-food chains and US - politics at the same time. I like much more, if they conquer the world with food & beverages than with bombs and missiles ! Coffee and food are luckily one of the things here, that are very un-political, well like last Saturday, had some Falafel in some Libanese place, then went to cinema to watch - well that´s political now.. "The Road to Guantanamo" - and afterwards to Starbucks for some caramel-stuff. Is probably the same here, when you go to a Chinese restaurant you do for sure not think of Mao, and horrible work-condition for Chinese workers who produce our t-shirts etc. Yes, I did wonder too, why not any of the big brands were on the BC-ferries, perhaps they thought it´s too much hassle to open places onboard a ship ? We had some ferries here, which had a Mac Donalds onboard, but not anymore.. simply, people liked to get something different when on the water, not the same stuff you get on land.

At least when BCF looks for food service providers they use businesses that are originally from BC for the most part. Villages, Bread Garden, and White Spot all originate either in Victoria or Vancouver. Starbucks is really the only exception from BCF's third party food service providers.
But even though those are all good, I still miss the Sunshine Breakfast.
