B.C. Ferries has selected names for its three new Super C-class vessels.
Coastal Renaissance will begin plying the waters between Nanaimo's Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay in early 2008. The second ship has been named Coastal Inspiration. The third ship will be named Coastal Celebration.
Coastal Inspiration and Coastal Celebration will enter service in March and June of 2008. Two of the new vessels will operate between Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay while the third ship will be on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route.
An advisory board made up of newspaper reporters and B.C. Ferries' employees selected the names after reviewing more than 7,600 entries submitted during a company-sponsored ship-naming contest. © The Daily News (Nanaimo) 2006

That was also on A Channel, I heard it 7 minutes ago. (7:30am) So the Super C's can now be called Coastal Class vessels!

Coastal Inspiration and Coastal Celebration will enter service in March and June of 2008. Couldn't they have picked better names?

That's kinda dissappointing.... At least they have their own class of names, but wow....those names seem really out of place with the other Ferries..... Those are cruise ship names, not BC Ferry names if you ask me...

I'd rather see them named "Queen of..." or even "Spirit of...".

When I heard the names on the CBC Radio news, I threw up a little bit in my mouth.
I never cared for the 'Spirit' prefixes, to be honest. It was, quite frankly, one of the most egregious displays of political correctness gone amok that I have ever seen. This trend of removing ships' gender is sickening. David Hahn's penchant for total idiocy strikes again; let's see if he'd like being ritually castrated as much as these ferries like being given the most asexual, meaningless names of ANY ferry on the west coast of North America.

Don't beat around the bush, Fenklebaum. Tell us how you really feel. Gender issues aside, I'm a traditionalist. Nothing wrong with 'Queen of'. It's a part of our history, and if BC Ferries hadn't forbidden it in their name the ships exercise, I think most people would have stuck with it. But should boats always be female? Does a lump like the Queen of Chilliwack really suggest anything admirably feminine?

These names just don't suite BCF. Coastal Rennaisance sounds too cruise ship like. We still have tons more cities on the coast. There's nothing named after Delta, Richmond, or Ladner. These different names are definelty a down side to BCF going private.

Those have got to be the lamest names I have ever had. Couldn't BC Ferries do better? I mean, what is wrong with "Queen of"? I personally don't really like the "Spirit of" Name, but "Coastal"? Ughhh. Makes me shiver even thinking of that name. Hopefully, I won't ever go on one of those ferries (shiver!)

There is one simple word for those names, LAME!. Even the WSF names are better than those. What is BCF running, Carnival style by naming it after something like "Carnival Conquest". Ugh FENK! we are waiting for a reply! (IMHO)

Hmmm - these new names are certainly awful. The news article I read mentioned that the names were not even amongst those submitted - so why have a contest? Wonder what they will call the new ferries for the northern runs ... the North Coastal Plodder? Ridiculous.

Why not call it the Spirit of Hartley Bay for the northern vessels. FENKLEBAUM! FRONT AND CENTER ON THE STAGE ON THE DOUBLE! WE NEED SOME SUPPORT HERE!
Seriously, all of us could have come up with better names. Fenk is right, this is the biggest PC scheme for names that I have ever seen. Who ever is in charge of this needs to try and pronounce it right, unlike after the Oak Bay crashed. Someone decided to box themselves in and not "think outside the box". It is naming essentially a piece of garbage. Something that is going to be good you.
That news release on this announcement, two letters for it B.S. I seriously would want to sue just to get better names. Has that chocolate hollondaise got to their heads or what? It does make sense but really, who cares if it is PC? I really dont, it just makes the names worse.

Well that's BC Ferries for you! I actually dont mind those names, but they are names that would probably be better suited for Cruise Ships not ferries. Welcome Aboard the Coastal Inspiration, lol! Queen of Nanaimo Teen, you wouldent go on the Super C's cause of the names?? lol! That's kind of funny! I will most likely definately be riding those ferries. Wheather I like the name or not is another story. I do think they could of used the Queen of or even Spirit of would of been a neat way to go!

Here is the article posted on the Global website:
'Coastal' to be prefix for the names of Super C ferries Three new ferries to share nautical prefix: Committee forges Super C-class ship names after sifting through 7,602 contest entries Carolyn Heiman, Times Colonist Published: Thursday, May 11, 2006 The "Queen" is dead and the "Spirit" is gone.
"Coastal" will be the prefix for the names of the three Super C-class ferries ordered by B.C. Ferries and being constructed in Germany by the shipbuilding company Flensburger.
The first ship, scheduled to arrive in British Columbia in December 2007, will be called the Coastal Renaissance.
It will be followed by Coastal Inspiration and then Coastal Celebration, names arising from an unprecedented name-the-ferry contest that closed on Jan. 31.
They'll serve the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay and Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen routes.
The public submitted 7,602 ship names during the contest. At the end of a one-day meeting, the advisory board that made the final selection compiled the chosen names from among the better suggestions, said Mike Corrigan, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for B.C. Ferries.
"Coastal" connotes the area in which the ships will operate, Corrigan said.
"Renaissance" signifies the renewal of the ferry company as an indepen-dent, commercial company. "Inspiration" reflects the inspirational beauty of coastal B.C. And "Celebration" was chosen to mark the completion of the Super C-class fleet.
Corrigan said the naming of ferries has a symbolic importance "because it is part of our fabric -- our DNA. Ferries are our lifeline. You will see generations grow up on them, going back and forth between the Island and the mainland. These ships will be around for 40 years."
There are no rules when it comes to naming ships, except that no two can be registered under the same name.
Alaska names its ferries after glaciers. Washington state has a range of names. Names based on geography are popular with the Canadian navy and had been the source, until now, of titles for the B.C. Ferry fleet.
But Corrigan said confusion can arise among customers when a ship named the Queen of Nanaimo, for example, is positioned on a route not connected to Nanaimo.
The U.S. navy employs a range of criteria, including the naming of ships after notable deceased Americans and names deemed to be inspirational.
The Royal Navy has had some of the most inspirational ship names, including HMS Revenge, HMS Conqueror and HMS Swiftsure. When the HMS Dreadnought was launched in 1906, one member of the U.S. Congress joked that the American navy should build the "USS Skeered of Nothing."
Corrigan said the B.C. panel reviewed all of the entries it received, including some that were dead in the water from the beginning. While he declined to give any examples, it's known suggestions included Queen of the Sunshine Breakfast and Queen of the Two-Sailing Wait.
Of the total entries, 159 entrants submitted portions of the names eventually chosen. They were awarded either a round-trip pass for a vehicle and driver or a B.C. Ferries gift certificate.
Since no one submitted the precise titles chosen, the names of all contest entrants were put into a draw for one of three grand prize packages, which include two nights at a resort, dining gift certificates and ferry trips. Check bcferries.com for the winners list.

I wonder what BC Ferries has to say about this, lol! If they knew alot of people dident like the new names. Not like they would do anything about it! It would of been nice if they had used the Queen or Spirit name. Spirit of Georgia Strait or Active Pass I thought were really good names and also Spirit of Hartley Bay for the Northern Vessel!

This is probably just a prelude to Gordon Campbell selling the whole shebang off to Dennis Washington. After all, Seaspan already has a vessel named 'Coastal Spirit'...

I think they could have done better, but its not as bad as it could be. they dont reflect the traditional citing of BC, but they probably will grow n us. i would have preferred to see something with a little more guts. "Coastal Endurace" "Coastal Freedom" and "Coastal Swift" would have been good choices too

The thing is now we have to live with it. Another screw up for BCFS. Dammit Gordon Campbell!! Why did you make them private! First they Build them In Germany now they name them like they're Cruise Ships. All Beacause of Lord Gord. I also can't belive the people who put in names like Two Sailing Wait and Sunshine Breakfast
What they said right here makes a good Point.
"But Corrigan said confusion can arise among customers when a ship named the Queen of Nanaimo, for example, is positioned on a route not connected to Nanaimo."
That is so true however that was her original route but that can lead to confusion if she's on the Tsawwassen-SGI Service.
Still it will be a different experence riding on the Coastal Renaissance in the future. Two People could talk and one mentions the Coastal Renaissance and the other says "Oh is that a cruise ship" and he's says "No it's a BC Ferry"
Sounds like names they could use for Inside Passage Ships. Still the names aren't that bad

Why the hell would people be confused if the Queen of Nanaimo is sailing in the Gulf Islands an not Nanaimo?? They put the ships on the routes for capacity not the names. Try putting the Nanaimo on the Departure Bay run, and just see the waits!

and if they get confused. that means that the Spirits can only run one way. and deadheads the other way. put the bowen queen on the bowen run.
