Just passing on a roomer from the yahoo boards....Apparently all of the passenger deck windows are getting replaced with the fire windows. I don't really like the look of them, but if it keeps windows on the ferries then it's good, but at least all of the windows are going to be the same shape unlike Cow and Coq with having some with the original square with rounded edges and some just a square, on my trip today on Cow I was walking down the aisle and I was walking along the fire windows and then I looked out the window and they made the horizon seem wavy as I was walking Oh well as long as they keep me from getting burned if I have to disembark via one of the two zodiaks.

They need a better shape of fire windows at the forward lounge area. Take the Tsawwassen for example she looks like the Seachelt Queen.

The Coquitlam was done relatively cheap, costing only an astounding $18 million while her sister, Cowichan was done for $34 million. Don't ask me why the difference is so large, but I think it has something to do with extra "engine work" to the Cowichan which the Coquitlam had not recieved. The Oak Bay (because of the larger passenger deck and some other expenses) will supposedly cost $40 million. BC Ferries, cheap? HA!

Also too they never put the fire windows on Coq, they just had a section of a wall with no windows, and apparently one of those windows, just one costs $10,000. But now of course they have those windows. So their refit costs should be about the same.

Hmm thinking again, rough estimate....$10,000 X 20 windows = $200,000. Maybe a bit more or a bit less. That definitely won't add up to the 12 million difference between the sisters

the price of steel in the last couple of years has risen drastically. this may have something to do with the difference in refit costs. also just because the boats look the same on the outside doesn't mean they are identical on the inside. different things have been added to different ferries over the years meaning they might be completely different now from each other then the day they were launched.

According to the info on the yahoo group, The Oaky is now in phase 2 of her refit, as she is now in the Water. I thought I saw a boat in the water in front of the drydock when I was up Grouse last night, skiing down Cut (big rectangular open ski run that you can see from anywhere in the Lower Mainland)

Looks like 3 more months of her refit then. She's almost done. I guess they gotta start putting in the new seats and all of that in now ;D

I saw the OakBay from the air today, while flying in a Baxter beaver from Vancouver Harbour.
The OakBay sure looked funny with her whole bottom half in reddish colour. At first glance I thought she was a V-Class, and then I noticed the 2nd wheelhouse at the other end.

This is the first ship they haven't strip all the paint but the funnel off. I wonder if that's coming, or if the exterior modifications aren't large enough to justify it?

They did the same with Cowichan last year by stripping her down from the upper outer deck down

Just spreading what someone said on the yahoo site. Apparently she is ahead of schedule on her mid life and they're working on the seating. Also she's going to be getting the big screen tv's and dvd players like on the SOBC. That's going to be so awesome when she is back. So if they're working on the seating then wouldn't they have the walls and the floors done? Maybe quite possibly most of the cealing? But definitely by the sounds of it she's almost done. Wait a second...wasn't Cowichan done by the start of May but then they spent like all of May and most of June doing crew training for the chutes and getting familiar with the ship and getting her painted up?

I saw her tonight while doing a gas run (filled up for 89.4!!) and you can see all the temp. interior lights in now... most of the windws are now covered over, resized, or not changed as applicable.
I wonder where the TVs will go, it's a totally different interior space than the Spirits. Oh well, Im sure they'll make due. Maybe the Coquitlam will get them when she goes in for refit in September I think it is (Or Cowichan?)

They're going to be in the two forward lounges and in the kids play area. Coquitlam goes in in September. But I forget when Cowichan does.

But last Tuesday when I was in Vancouver I saw some stations at like 99.9/litre, and in Victoria it was 96.9. I though usually gas in Victoria costs more than the mainland. The last two time I filled up in Vancouver I saved like a few cents at Petro Can.

102.9 today....
I noticed a huge hole in the forward lounge of the Oak Bay today. There is literally a large section, 2 maybe 2.5 windows wide just cut out of the ship... on the end towards the North Shore. Any ideas what this is about?

What do you mean, "huge hole?" Do you mean that they took a chunk of the super structure out of the ship or what?

yeah like there is a literal 'hole', missing steal in the section. I'd drive down now and get a shot but the sun has just set (as you can tell)

I was wondering about that. Karl put a good picture of it on his site when he took pictures of it..when was it, like a month or two ago. You get a good view of it in the same picture that is under my name to the left of this post. It almost looks like they're putting another chute at the front and back I sure hope not.
