Does anyone think the Alberni needs to have something done about it i mean it used to have one car deck but now that it has two the passenger deck is crowded i haven't been on it so i don't know how crowded it is on trips but they need to do something about the passenger decks.

A quick history of the Queen of Alberni:
I doubt they will extend the passenger deck in her reburbishment, but I couldn't be sure.

There was no need for the passenger deck enlargement when she only had one car deck. But now she has two car decks so I think even if they increased the passenger deck like the Cowichan and Coquitlam, she wouldent be as crowded on busy sailings. Try putting the Queen of Saanich on the Duke Point run with a smaller passenger deck and see how crowded it would be. It dosent seem right that they would increase the car capacity with a upper vehicle deck which would increase the passenger capacity and not enlarge the passenger deck. Dosent make sense. Last time I was on the Alberni was from Horseshoe Bay when she was on the Naniamo run and she was pretty busy the 5pm departure from Horseshoe Bay.

What if they gave the Alberni a huge refit by giving her a new passenger deck space to go under the smokestack or somthing else

I guess that is true in a way, but from what I heard there will be no super c's on the Duke Point run. But if the first one they put on the Departure Bay run that would free up another c class to replace the New West, But I am wondering if they have a permenent c class to replace New West they will have to lift it or do something about the overheight situation so it can carry more overheights. What would be the best ship to have that done, Oak Bay or Coq, or Cow???
I wonder if this new super C will be based out of Horseshoe Bay or Departure Bay? Probably too soon to know!

There is no ship planned for arrival in 2005 for any major Mainland-Vancouver Island routes. I think, by information of the ships now, there will be a relief/replacement vessel (now Esquimalt). Since they are probably going to have two "C" Class on the Departure Bay and Langdale runs, each, they can build that "replacement" vessel and use her as a summer vessel on Duke Point-Tsawwassen. By that time, a third vessel in the summer will probably be needed for the route. They will not expand the passenger deck on the Alberni. They could possibly add some interior on the sun deck, as stated by PR Kid, but we won't know until it's complete. If they were to extend the passenger deck, similar to the Coquitlam's and Cowichan's, she would probably be in refurbishment for a year or so, rather than six months. It would be smartest to start refurbishment towards the end of summer holidays.

The Q-Alberni, in it's original configuration, looks like the Capilano....on steroids. (apart from the double-bridge, it reminds me of the Cap).

I have only been on the Alberni once and she was not crowded at all...but that was also on the 7:15 am sailing from Tsawwassen when the vehicle deck was probably only about half full. I was on her last February, heading to Long Beach for the weekend. It was as calm as I've ever seen it between the Mainland and Island with almost no wind. However, her passenger deck is quite small and it probably would be crowded on a full sailing. She does need the mid-life refit and have her windows put back in. Came back on the Coquitlam out of Departure Bay. The wind was as strong as I've ever seen it as it was a storm and the ship had some rocking action. She is nice now that she's refurbished.

ive been on the alberni before, its a nice ship. but some of the technology is too new. to undeveleoped. the gearbox for example. i remember when the albernie had to turn around near the dock because her gearbox and drive shaft only had 1 direction power at full speed

I have been on the Alberni twice this year. The 3:15 sailing from Duke Point on a Sunday and she was pretty crowded and also the 5pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay on a Tuesday back when she was on the Horseshoe Bay run. I would assume though the 5:15am sailings and the 10:45pm sailing she wouldent be very crowded as I took the New West 10:45pm sailing from Duke Point back in 97 during the summer on a Saturday night and the lower vehicle deck wasent even full. That was actually the only time I have been on the New West. Have to take a trip on her again one day. I like the Alberni though, she is a neat/interesting ship.

i've been on the albreni once or twice, it is not a fun ride if it's dark cold or rainy out, cause it can get really cramped in the passenger area so its good to go outside, Shes a good ship but after so many lifts and stretches she is very different from your normal c class.

she wasn't a normal C class to begin with. i hope they just decide to put it on a trucks only run when the super "C" arrives

I'm pretty sure the deployment of Cs and Super Cs will more closely resemble:
HSB-DB Super C1 Super C2 Super C3
HSB-Langdale Queen of Surrey
Tsawassen-DP Queen of Alberni (Queen of New West)
Tsawassen-SB Queen of Cowichan Queen of Coquitlam
Aux Queen of Oak Bay
I say this b/c the Queen of New West isn't supposed to be retired for quite some time (like 10 years after the SuperCs enter service), it's planned to get investment for structural improvement, and it's suited to that route. Same story with the Alberni, but that's being discussed.
The one thing I could see is the retention of a standard C (The Oak Bay, in my scenario) to make hourly service HSB-DB
BC FERRIES CANNOT JUST MAKE THE ALBERNI "TRUCKS ONLY" Think about it!!! "Hey let's waste 60% of our capacity..." I'm sure that's what David Hahn is saying right now.

You are actually wrong, according to information from BC Ferries. Here's how it should look during/after the Olympics of 2010.
Langdale-Horseshoe Bay: Queen of Coquitlam Relief vessel(s): Queen of Cowichan
Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay: Queen of Surrey
Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay: Queen of Oak Bay Relief vessel(s): Super "C" #3
Tsawwassen-Duke Point: Queen of New Westminster (possible a new vessel)
Duke Point-Tsawwassen: Queen of Alberni Relief vessel(s): (possibly new vessel, possibly Queen of New Westminster)
Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay: Spirit of British Columbia Relief vessel(s): Super "C" #2
Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen: Spirit of Vancouver Island Relief vessel(s): Super "C" #1
There may also be a passenger-only service between Vancouver Airport, downtown Nanaimo, Vancouver Airport and downtown Victoria.

I'm not sure exactly about the repositioning of the current "C" Class vessels, but that's what I am predicting as that's where BC Ferries seems to be headed. That plus feedback from other members of this and another forum. The rest of the information I got from BC Ferries' news section. This is not certain yet by BC Ferries as it was only plans.
