Anybody know what the 'emergency' is with the Hyak? She seems fine. Is there any update on the "emergency" repairs needed on MV Hyak? Perhaps this is part of her routine annual maintenance which would be needed before the summer schedule begins. Kingston/Edmonds run switches to three boats By Annie Tietje Feb 21 2007 KINGSTON — North Kitsap residents who ride the Kingston/Edmonds ferries will soon notice a change in the number of boats servicing the run. Washington State Ferries announced last week that the M/V Spokane, which can accommodate 188 vehicles, will be moved to the Bremerton/Seattle run to replace the M/V Hyak, and two smaller ferries will move to the North End run. The M/V Hyak requires emergency repairs, in which the commutators on the drive motors will be replaced.
“We have done this before on the Kingston run with success,” said WSF customer information manager Susan Harris-Huether. “The first two boats will stay on the normal schedule, and the third boat will follow the second boat, not on a schedule, to pick up extra traffic.” The addition will last from Feb. 25 to March 20, and residents can count on a normal ferry schedule through that time, Harris-Huether said. The M/V Chelan, which can accommodate 124 vehicles, and the M/V Evergreen State (87 vehicles) will replace the M/V Spokane from Feb. 25 to March 4. The M/V/ Evergreen State (87 vehicles) and the M/V Quinault (59 vehicles), will be on the run the remainder of the time. “This might be confusing in the summer, but not in the dead of winter like we’re planning,” she said.

Good thing that they caught it now...we do not want another ELWHA incident.

No kidding... that's about what would happen, too. We can't afford to have another Super out for that length of time.
On the other hand, who am I kidding? We can't afford to have another Super out, at all.

The causes are different; only the end result would be the same. The Elwha had a hairline fracture of insulation; the Hyak has to replace her commutators.

On another post it was mentioned that the winter schedule has been disrupted by the breakdowns of MV Elwa and MV Tacoma. Perhaps MV Hyak should be added to the list as she is also out of service for emergency repairs. Any info as to when MV Hyak will be returning to service?

If the Tacoma really comes back on Monday, WSF should be able to put the Puyallup back on Edmonds/Kingston until the Hyak gets fixed. Glad I did my round trip last week.

Wondering what will be happening to MV Hyak during the many vessel moves projected over the next few weeks? Will she be staying as the regular ferry on the Bremerton run or will she be heading back to the Islands . It should be interesting to see what will happen!

I remember from last year that we eventually ended up with the WALLA WALLA and KITSAP at Bremerton. The HYAK was up in the islands providing much needed capacity.

It is very possible that the Elwha, if it is ready, will return to the Islands to run as the # 3 boat, which would leave the Hyak and Walla Walla at Bremerton.

It is very nice to have the HYAK and WALLA WALLA. They are able to help out quite a bit when it comes to capacity, and when it comes to outdoor space for those hot summer evenings.

For sure, when it is 80 degrees outside and after a Mariner's game. The extra deck space is nice to get more room. On the 130s, you need to compete for space.

I agree, it is the one thing I miss about the Elwha.Thankfully the Duty Free store on the Chelan is right next to the stairwell, so if you open the door at the bottom of the stairs we actually get a nice breeze.

I have been observing lately, the 6:20am from Bremerton (WALLA WALLA) does not fill up (or if it does, there are only a few cars left over) The 5:30 from Seattle has been very inconsistent. One day, there were about 10 left over, but for the last 2 days, there have been between 5 and 20 empty spots onboard the HYAK (it waas the YAKIMA thru Wednesday). This morning, all of us walkons had to board the WALLA WALLA on the car deck at Bremerton for the 6:20am.

With MV Kitsap replacing MV Hyak on the Bremerton run, where is MV Hyak going? They sent MV Yakima back to the Islands, so it would seem Hyak is not needed there right now.

Hyak I think is going in for her maintenance since it got put on hold. She's probably heading up to the San Juans to replace the Kaleetan (which is scheduled for work from 4/23 to 5/11). I wonder which vessel will replace the Kitsap when she replaces the Kittitas (scheduled to go in for drydocking on 5/8) since 2 super class vessels will be out of service at that time.

Issaquah's going home, relieving Kitsap for Bremerton; the Hyak will be back to Anacortes by Monday. I suspect that the Kaleetan's yard trip will be curtailed by a couple of days to make it possible for the Kitsap to get to Mukilteo (or possibly the Kittitas' trip gets shortened; a couple of days one way or the other).
All in all, though, it's a shame the Evergreen State wasn't able to make schedule up north. After a bad start due to the condition of the charts and nav pubs (hadn't been updated in a year at minimum), I was settling in and making myself comfortable in my old home. Damn it, I left my grapefruit in the fridge, too. Ah well.
