That good to hear that WSF could get additional SOLAS vessels. I think good vessel for this is for MV Samish. Would they still built another SOLAS vessel with the new flight of hybrid of Olympic Class vessels?

Would they still built another SOLAS vessel with the new flight of hybrid of Olympic Class vessels? I think a better choice would be Suquamish, because it has the Tier 4 emissions control engines. That would eliminate the need to build a new SOLAS hybrid (though I wouldn't say no to the possibility), unless they're planning far enough out to allow for the phase-out of the Chelan. Seems fairly distant now, but the Long Range Plan anticipates that due to their hard use, the Issaquahs will need to be phased out at 50 years of age instead of 60.

Got a chance to head over to the shipyard in Anacortes and check out the Elwha. Lots of the steel on the car deck looks ground up and it's all gray, and all the yellow barriers are gray as well. There are no more car deck lines (the white and yellow lines) and it looks like the outside has gotten a touch-up from what I can tell. Hopefully we'll all get a chance to get back onboard at some point when they retire the boat pretty soon.

She's still seaworthy but it's going to cost too much money, money the state does not have, to fix all of the steel degradation in Elwha, so the state is prepping to have her decommissioned. See earlier posts in this thread if you want the story on what's been happening with Elwha.

The Elwha is done.

Sad news, but unfortunately, seems like the "best" decision rather than attempting to harbor millions of dollars from elsewhere in the budget. Sad to see her go, but many good years will always stick with me.

WSF actually got money to do a study into converting another ferry to meet SOLAS standards. One of the Olympics in the future will be SOLAS-compliant, to my knowledge, but not one of the next two, but I definitely expect that to change.

WSF recieved money to do a study to evaluate new builds versus existing conversion, that's what I mentioned above.

Now that she is offically retied, Why is she still on vesselwatch/WSDOT's page? And why is she still at anacortes? And also i would like to know whats the big deal with corrrosion? I mean she is still safe and able to be in service if she just gets painted. They already replaced some of the rotten steel when it was remodeled in the 2010's
