The contract hasn't shown up on the WSF site for the dockside work (which I'm assuming is when the bilge valve work was going to be done), so I'm guessing that it hasn't put up for bid yet.

Good news for the Chelan guys though! Helloooo Bremerton for the Elwha! That'll get the Chelan's home port changed, if it hasn't already... As for the Elwha to Bremerton, well... think we can get the Hyak in trade? Won't be the same without Hank the Crank, but... ;D

Good point about the Chelan, with the change in guard on the Hyak contrary to what B week on there thinks i bet the Hyak WILL be homeported in Anacortes. I have not heard much LATELY about the Elwha going down sound but it would not be suprising.

Heh. Works for me. Send me a telegraph boat! The Elwha's proposed trade to Bremerton has been rumbling for a long time, for an assortment of reasons. The Elwha is a lousy boat for heavy weather and she would be better served to be on a more protected run like Bremerton.

Sounds like a rumor starter to me. That having been said, it makes sense, especially if the Conspiracy To Eliminate The Sidney Run exists--which I believe it does. That run is so hard to defend economically... anyway, we shall see. Early 2009 dockside yard period cancelled, no bilge valve replacement.

She's baack! Elwha's now docked at Slip 1 in Anacortes, as of 16:00 today. Is she taking Sealth's place, or Chelan's?

I can confirm the Chelan was on the Sidney run today, Heard a "Skip" on the Scanner as she was switching over to Seattle Traffice.

Yeah, she'll be running to Sidney through January 3. The winter Schedule goes into effect January 4, and of course, there is no Sidney service during the winter.

The Chelan is, as far as I know, the only boat WSF has that is eligible to run to Sidney. No Chelan, no Sidney.

Aha, i found it barnacle! I had a interesting conversation with a LDO last night and she said that the Elwha was not on the "bid sheet" for the winter schedule in Anacortes! I am guessing this is due to the previously sch'd bilge valve replacement, what do you think?

Probably that was the case. Originally the Hyak was on deck for the #1 slot, but the maint sched has changed about six times since the bid packets were printed. C'est la vie, oui?

Guess I am missing a vessel or something. If MV Walla Walla replaces MV Spokane at Edmonds-Kingston on Monday morning, which vessel will replace MV Walla Walla on Seattle-Bremerton? The WSF chart lists MV Hyak as coming down from the Islands, but does that depend on MV Elwha being ready for service? If she isn't............. I'm puzzled??

If the Elwha is not ready by tomorrow, then I suspect one of the following will happen:
(1) Dockside work for the Spokane will be delayed.
(2) Someone (most likely Bremerton) will be short a boat.

Elwha was on the move today. I was on the 6:20 SEA-BAI sailing tonight, and she followed us into Eagle Harbor.

The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division has now completed necessary repairs to the 144-auto ferry Elwha. It will return to service on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route on Thursday, April 9. The Sealth will return to the inter-island route by relieving the 34-auto Hiyu.

How/why is the MV Elwha so different from her sisters? Are these changes related to her service on the international route? Seems like she, rather than MV Hyak, would be the first Super to be scheduled for retirement. Could she be rebuilt or changed back in some way, if her service on the international route is over?

I believe, unless things have changed, that Elwha is the first Super scheduled to be retired. Isn't Hyak receiving a Late-In-Life-Upgrade (LLU) to extend her service life, or has that plan been tabled?

I believe it goes Elwha Kaleetan Yakima Hyak As for trying to change the Elwha back to be something like the others, it would cost far too much to try and fix everything they've done to it over the years. I suspect it would be cheaper to build a new boat.

The changes were made in 1990-91, and were indeed related to the international route--in fact they were specific to it. The Elwha's emergency generator is in a different location (before they realized the stability problems it would cause by putting it between the stacks), she carries extra liferafting, a duty-free store, and the stairs are enclosable structures (the last mod being added in 1999). She's scheduled to be first out, around 2021. (The Hyak is scheduled to be last in 2027 at last look.) Rebuilding her would be thoroughly impractical and a waste of taxpayers' money, not to mention the majority of the reversals would actually cause her certificate to be revoked because the other Supers without the mods are grandfathered in. Current construction, as far as I know, actually has to have the elevator and enclosed stair towers. It's a 'you-can't-go-back' situation. The boat's problems stem from the fact that the design was originally inclusive of these features, and retrofits are always a nightmare for a ship. Oh, and there are vague rumblings that her international days might not yet be over. Don't put too much stock in them, mind; they're pretty vague.
