The Yakima's sides don't look horrible; the Hyak's sides look horrible.

Whew, I was wondering about that comment, until I went back and looked at the photo album that Kahloke posted. Those look nice. This is what the outside of the Yakima looked like at 7:00 this afternoon: Yeah, I know, it will be taken care of in good course......

Wow. That's really deteriorated in the last few months. The Hyak still looks worse, though.

A plane leaving an island via a ferry Yakima @ Orcas That's a really neat photo! That dock resembles an airport, in a way, with that windsock. I just wonder if the YAKIMA required an air traffic controller for clearance for take off? ;D "MV YAKIMA, Orcas dock, wind from the south, cleared for takeoff".

MV Yakima, at Anacortes terminal on Oct 26, 2010: --------- - seen from the arriving Elwha: - I'm on the Elwha car-deck, and decided to get a low-angle shot before I get into my car. 2 of the Super-Friends (Yakima & Elwha), seen from above Anacortes terminal.

Here are some of my Yakima pics: Yakima after getting the new pilothouse windows, but it was the 1st iteration, with the small center window. It was later that they replaced that with the wider center window - Apr, 2002 a very full car deck - Apr, 2002 Yakima at Orcas - Aug, 2004 (with her new widened pilothouse window) Yakima in Upright Channel showing off her rust spots - Jul, 2009 Sep, 2009 Yakima's cabin - Jun 2010. Yakima has the best finished cabin out of all of the Supers, IMO

:)just a little bit better vision than the skipper would have had from the pilot house of Kalakla, or for that matter, the very advanced Chinook of 1947! mrdot.

It was like looking through a crack in the wall.

I love the before and after pics WSF posts. Yakima's all shiny and new looking again. So, what vessels do we have left that need re-painting? It seems to me that the worst of the offenders have all been cleaned up - i.e. Hyak, Yakima, Chelan.

There are those large pieces of peeling/blistering/missing paint on the M/V Tacoma...

It will be nice for the boats in the San Juans and on the downtown runs where they are seen by all those out of towners to have decent paint jobs. Hopefully we'll never get to this point again. Heard some pretty disparaging comments about things from out of towners (and locals) while sitting at Ivar's grabbing lunch last summer. Not knockin' the other runs at all but those are the big "public face" locations IMO and WSF is a big attraction.
So Tacoma's in the yard right now at Everett, but the work is all cabin interior related. Hopefully it's at least cleaned up for the interim though while she's out of service.

I think the best approach is to keep the worst boat right up front in the public eye. Public opinion and optics are what, in the end, moves government money around. Awful pictures of "unsafe rusty tubs" start showing up everywhere, tourism groups start to complain, pressure comes from the public and ultimately pressures to government to shake the funding loose. In my opinion keeping the worst boats in the fleet out of sight only makes the problem worse. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

Sadly, we've been at this point before--mostly in the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s. This is usually what happens when the preservation/maintenance budget gets the hack as a cost-saving measure. It's cyclical.

Barnacle, as a relative young'un I remember the 90's issues a bit but not the 80's issues. I was to young to pay attention then. I was more interested in the fact that I was going to grandma's house and was about to get candy. ;-)
Kam, I agree fully with your sentiment, but in a situation like this I'd go for an approach whereby things are optimizing service, maintenance needs and the systems public perception with a little politics thrown in as you suggest. We rarely vote during the spring/summer/early fall down here on anything big and the voters memory is very short. Tourist groups in W.Wa (at least those in the metro area) probably won't complain about it because then they'll be asked to pay for it, at this point many of them already feel over taxed due to the stadium and other levies.

I am thinking I might try and get down to Anacortes sometime soon to get a trip in on the Yakima another Super I havent been on. If only they would send the Kaleetan up to Anacortes so I can get a trip on her I can say after I have been on all the Supers. Seeing Anacortes is closer for me to get too it's easier to do those routes when a different ship is up there.

The Kaleetan's appearances in Anacortes have been heavily curtailed. It'll still come up on occasion, but don't expect it to stay for long.

Hiyu to the rescue again...
Yakima ferry removed from service in San Juan Islands for repairs
Date: Friday, October 07, 2011
Contact: Joy Goldenberg , WSF communications manager, 206-515-3411 (Seattle)
Expect ferry delays this weekend and next week
ANACORTES – The Yakima ferry was immediately removed from service this morning after maintenance crews discovered signs of abnormal wear on the journal bearing, which supports the propulsion shaft. Ferry riders in the San Juan Islands should expect delays through the weekend and next week with the 144-car ferry out of service.
Washington State Ferries is moving vessels to maintain service on the route. The available vessels have less capacity and are slower than the Yakima and will not be able to keep the regular schedule.
Starting Saturday, Oct. 8, the 34-car Hiyu will replace the 87-car Evergreen State as the inter-island vessel. The Evergreen State will then serve as one of the three vessels that sails between Anacortes and the islands.
The Yakima is currently in Anacortes and will be towed to Eagle Harbor today. WSF crews need to determine the extent of the damage to estimate the length of repair time.
Crews will remove the journal bearing and inspect the problem. A subcontractor will repair a new bearing and WSF crews will install it.
For the latest information, customers can check WSF’s bulletin page.

oh this would be a good time to go down and get a trip in on the Evergreen State from Anacortes instead of trying to get on her as the interisland boat. Although I dont know how long the Yakima will be out for.
