Kieran:
Thanks for the story and link on the Seaspan Resolution. The linked website is an interesting maritime blog.
Do you know if Seaspan is retiring any existing tugs, or is the Resolution just expanding their fleet?

warning!!! mega photos! Here are some photos of Chad, a family friend docking a freighter from his Smit tug (formerly Rivtow). I got these pics early in the morning (about 4 or 5am) near Prince Rupert, last august. The engine is tiny compared to that of the NorEx Looking forward on the tug The freighter, called Jag Arnav, is registered in Mumbai It's really big! And super long! At the wheel The East-indian workers get ready to lower the mooring lines Jag approaches the pier Benny, Chad's coworker, ties the mooring lines to the bow of the tugboat TP1, one of the pusher tugs The bulbous bow Pulling the mooring lines toward the pier TP2 keeps the freighter in place The aft section of the ship Her rear Lowering the stern mooring cables We repeated the same process that we did at the bow: Lower mooring cables, tie to tug, pull to pier, throw to port workers, motor away. Benny tying the mooring cables As we motored back into Prince Rupert Harbour, a familiar sight greeted us. We caught up to and passed the NorAd Smit logo And that's how I helped dock a freighter

You've got a couple of doubles in there, Luke. Were those intended to be different photos? I know it can be hard sometimes to remember "did I copy that URL already?"

I know it can be hard sometimes to remember "did I copy that URL already?" oops, yeah, I apologize for any doubles EDIT: Ok, there shouldn't be any doubles left. If you do find any, you're probably just seeing double, and I recommend going to an eye specialist. If they say everythings fine with you eyes, and the problem persists, try whacking your computer with a hockey stick until the screen goes black. I guarantee that following these simple steps will end your troubles.

I hope this hasn't already been posted, please correct me if it has. From Western Mariner magazine's January issue: (From page 32 of the issue. Please consult www.eagleharbour.com for subscription inquiries. I do not have any affiliation with this magazine, though I do consider it quite the local-minded source of information as a subscriber) As quoted directly, spelling errors and all.

This is true, also included in the sale but not in the article are 9 of smits coastal tugs, the captain bob, mercer straits , smit princess, hustler 2 and storm coaster. River tugs : bering straits, jrw, tiger shaman, and smit ace. Just a side note, for now all these tugs pretty well are laid up in favour of using seaspan tugs, not sure why

Photographs to come.

Just another interesting note, with this aquision, seaspan has retired and is scrapping the tugs seaspan lorne, haida warrior 2 and harmac pine. Also sounds like the seaspan sovereign is being retired and texada crown also

Shoot!!! Any word on the Seaspan Sovereign's last trip, or was that the one that I witnessed recently on AIS-tracking?!? ...And to think that I already was kicking myself for not capturing her image when I had the chance; at that time she was running a Strait of Juan de Fuca run.
I sincerely hope that my worst prediction hasn't come true in this case. Thanks for any information ahead of time.

Regarding the mighty Sovereign. She was built in 1944. I had the pleasure of working on her in the early 70's and really enjoyed it. Island Tug and later Seaspan crews took care of the old girl pretty well. We were travelling from the Columbia River to the Queen Charlottes and all points in between and although not modern she was comfortable ( most of the time ..... she could sure roll in heavy weather!) and reliable. She has earned her retirement after more than 60 years.
