Was kinda hoping for a Q-boat though... Who wasn't? Unfortunately there wasn't even one under consideration... That was dead since a while.

"Uh, Dude, I'd like to make a reservation for the 4:20pm sailing on the Tokitae." ;D What route? Vigor to Vigor?

The most recent picture I have of the MV Tokitae - under construction at Vigor - Friday, November 9th, 2012:

The names just got selected! They are on the WSDOT page! Without making you wait anymore, the first ferry will be the MV Tokitae and the second will be the MV Samish! Arrrgh. Even though i figured it wouldn't happen, i was hoping for a departure from the native theme. My eye's involuntarily roll every time i hear Kwa-di Tabil. I don't think that would've been the best course of action considering a ferry fleet steeped in tradition. Personally, I find the notion to move the fleet off of a seventy-year-old naming convention appalling.

I was hoping the Tokitae would be chosen so I am glad that one made the list. I am not so thrilled with Samish though. I was hoping for either the Hoquiam or Cowlitz to make it. Oh well maybe next time around. I am so happy that the Ivar Haglund didn't make it. I like the tradition of ferries having a native theme and I don't want us to get away from it. I agree with Steve, it's appalling to think of moving the fleet off of a seventy year old naming tradition.

When is WA State Ferries going to choose the route(s) for the Tokitae and the Samish?

Thank your lucky stars that David Hahn never came to WSF's as you would have a new boat christened the 'Puget Sound Splendor'. You would also have a new home for management in swank new offices.

"Uh, Dude, I'd like to make a reservation for the 4:20pm sailing on the Tokitae." ;D We should probably consider it fortunate(?) that the boats are all now completely non-smoking. I mean it has those nice big sun decks after all... ;-) Or we could put her on International Route of we wanted to take the gag to it's inevitable conclusion. Overall decently happy with the names, though like it appears many others are also ... I was partial to Hoquiam.

I just told two people about the new name, their response was similar, both had something to do with tokin up. How ignorant of popular culture can some people be. When this news hits the general public, some people are going to be incensed. Leads me to wonder what the naming committee was smokin.

The news has probably already hit the general public, and quite honestly, I think that by spouting off on this board about the matter, you're already reaching at least 60% of the total number of people who even care.

My observations, as noted on my Facebook status:
Noticing that Washington State Ferries has just named the two newest ferries in the system. M.V. Samish and M.V. Tokitae. The first one I can see some confusion with in relation to the similarly-sounding "Salish," but moreso, the name "Tokitae" may bring on some unwarranted attention.

When is WA State Ferries going to choose the route(s) for the Tokitae and the Samish? No idea on that one, but these 144-car vessels are a good size for the Anacortes-San Juans route, Mukilteo-Clinton, and Seattle-Bremerton. I would not be surprised to see them juggled around quite a bit, especially during the refit season. In the summer, I would expect Mukilteo-Clinton to get one, and it is my hope that the San Juans get the other one during the summers.

OK, opinion time - mine:
Tokitae is just a weird name. It's not horrible, but there are so many better names from our state that they could have chosen.
Samish is a good name, but it's too close to Salish. I think Sammamish would have been a better choice.
Here are some names I think would be good choices for future ferries: Chehalis (it means "Sifting Sand") Entiat (it means "Rapid Water") Kalaloch (it means "Good Place to Land") Skamania (it means "Swift Water") Skokomish (it means "River People")
I would also love to see them resurrect these names: Klahanie Kulshan

For some entertainment have a read on the 'comments' section of the Kitsap Sun article linked above... It sounds like we need to brace ourselves for the INDEPENDENCE and CONSTITUTION classes: Guns, Glory, America and Jesus. Best comment ever.

I think the Tokitae is going to end up on the Clinton-Mukilteo route. I think she will make a record on the Clinton-Mukilteo route and break the record of the longest running vessel on the Clinton-Mukilteo route which is currently Cathlamet.

So, I guess Columbia Beach may get the new MV TOKITAE and the San Juans the new MV SAMISH.
Columbia Beach had the RHODY for a long time and was the only food ferry on the run from 1970 to 1977. Soon, the run should be getting the big roomy TOKEY and a choice of a warm Saloon Deck on cooler days and a Summer Deck during the warm days of summer.
Our Canadian friends coming down I-5 drive by a beautiful body of water called Lake Samish. They'll likely find themselves taking the ferry SAMISH to the San Juan Islands. Good choice for a northern ferry. Near the namesake lake. Would be nice to see the SAMISH do trips to the Saanich Peninsula. Us ferry fans have lost the QUEEN OF SAANICH due to scrapping. We're now getting the SAMISH.

What routes do you think the Samish will be on? I think the Samish will be assignment to the Seattle to Bremerton route along with the Kaleetan for the fall, winter and spring schedules and the Anacortes to San Juan Island route during the summer.

Took this one today, from the M.V. Kaleetan's sun deck. Looking towards the M.V. Tokitae.
