Coastal Celebration about to disappear around Helen Point & into Active Pass with the 11 AM sailing from Swartz Bay on 6 September 2018. This view is from the Salish Eagle berthed in Village Bay, Mayne Island.

Celebration is running as a single ender today, turning at Swartz Bay.
Coincidentally the Queen of Oak Bay is also single ended as of late.
Retro week!

I wonder how many people on board those vessels were like "Where are we going?" when the ferry was backing out in the other direction. I still remember when I rode the Queen of Tsawwassen in 2008 and I didn't know that it was a single-ended vessel (I wasn't much of a ferry nerd back then), so I was a bit confused when it was going the other direction out of Earl's Cove from where it came, not knowing it was just backing out.

Time for another New Addition to my Growing Library of Walkthroughs. The first one shot in the Wide-Angle of my Tokina 11-16 Lens. Also my longest Walkthrough to date. Thanks for doing this video and a similar one of the two Spirits; it really does help try to decide if I want to get up early to check the weather or get another couple of hours of zzzz for the sake of saying I finally rode on a Spirit class but possibly not get good pictures of other ferries. Only BC Ferry I ever rode on: PacifiCat Discovery. Also a factor in my decision-making process... I did photograph the Coastal Celebration from a Seabus last April to visit MLA Bowinn "BadAssBowinn" Ma: BC Ferries' MV Coastal Celebration in Shipyard by Joe A. Kunzler, on Flickr

Meant to post a note a lot sooner than Christmas Eve but I decided to take the Coastal Celebration back. Between my insomnia, my sincere desire to photograph the dawn from a quality sundeck, and a desire to see inside a ferry I photographed earlier this year I decided not to wait for the Spirit-class ride. I'm still - slowly - uploading quality photos of my amazing experience. But one question I have in my mind is this mast: One of the Marine Radars of the Coastal Celebration by Joe A. Kunzler, on Flickr Is this mast a radar or a radio or what? Thanks because if I'm wrong, I'd like to fix it before I'm done uploading photos to the Flickr album.

It was installed in April 2018 as part of the Sperry bridge equipment upgrade. I think it is for the AIS?

It was bound to happen eventually but after almost 10 years the Coastal Celebration is missing a chunk of her wrap; about ten percent of the Island/beach view wrap is gone and replaced with white paint. At first I thought it was a strong reflection! Good eye... She had a collision with a Dolphin in Tsawwassen early in 2018 #1 end Starboard side that put a good dent in her. It was cropped out and repaired during her refit in April.

I can't believe anyone trekked out to the Gulf Islands in the middle of a snow storm - something the Pacific Northwest / Lower Mainland doesn't cope with very well - to take ferry photos. But I sure am glad you did. These shots are incredible.

But I sure am glad you did. These shots are incredible. Probably, because having spent 40 years in Kitimat, BC (the name means 'People of the Snow'), a little bit of snow doesn't tie me up in knots. That photo attached shows me tending to my driveway after a big dump a few years ago. Attachments:

If I had the powers of a moderator, I would have instantly added this photo as a bonus to this current run of forum flagship banners.
THIS IS WINTER AT ITS BEST!
Crop this to the normal banner size, 1200 x 340, and see what the mods think.
Great photo!

With the Surrey being out for an as-yet unknown amount of time, I'm guessing the Celebrations' refit will be postponed at least until the SOVI is back in regular service (which will probably be about 4 weeks to a month from now, based on SOBCs timeline from last spring), if not postponed until after the summer season.

The Coastal Celebration is not showing on the schedule for the next month or so so I wonder if she's about to come back to Departure Bay for her refit. I'll update if she comes in.

No she will stay in Swartz Bay for her refit now that the SOVI is back. The only reason why she was in Departure Bay was because there was no berth for her in Swartz when there is 2 Coastal’s based there. The Coastal Celebration is not showing on the schedule for the next month or so so I wonder if she's about to come back to Departure Bay for her refit. I'll update if she comes in.

Since she hasn't yet shown up here and hasn't moved from Swartz Bay, I was thinking this must be the case. Interesting to know why.

So for some reason the last 2 times I was on the Coastal Celebration was when I was suppose to be on the Spirit of Vancouver Island.
The first time I was on the Coastal Celebration when I was suppose to be on the SoVI was on Sun July 8th this year and I was going back from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen as a Walk on and I had to take the bus to the terminal but for some reason I decided to take the 72 instead of the 70 Express so by the time I got there and it was 5 minutes before the ticket sales cut off for walk ons and there was a long line up so I ended up on the 20:00 sailing instead of the 19:00 sailing.
The Second time was on Mon August 26 and this time I was with my dad. He booked a reservation and we arrived about 8 mins before the 18:00 sailing which was on the Coastal Celebration and they usually will ask if there is room on the sailing if you want to go on that one instead and he said that he will take it so once again we ended up on the Coastal Celebration. And I have gotten kind of bored of being on it because I have now been on it 4 times since the last time I was on the SoVI back about a year ago and I have wanted to see her after her Mid Life Upgrade but I haven't gotten to yet so I am now going to be waiting until the Thanksgiving weekend.

The first time I was on the Coastal Celebration when I was suppose to be on the SOVI was on Sun July 8th this year and I was going back from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen as a Walk on and I had to take a Double Decker bus to get to the ferry terminal but it took a lot longer than expected and I got there about 5 minutes before the ticket sales for walk on passengers cut off and there was a really big line to get tickets and they said that there wasn't enough room for any more passengers so I was suppose to get the 7 PM sailing but instead I got the 8 PM on the Coastal Celebration and I was pretty disappointed because I wanted to see the SOVI's Mid Life upgrade which I didn't see yet. The 2nd time I was suppose to be on the SOVI but got the Coastal Celebration instead was pretty recently on Mon August 26 when I also had to take the ferry from Swartz Bay back to Tsawwassen but this time I was with my dad and he booked a reservation for the 7 PM sailing but we arrived at the ticket booth a few minutes before 6 PM and they asked if we wanted to get on the 6 and I said no but my dad said yes and then we got on the 6 and after that I was pretty mad because I haven't been on the SOVI since August of last year before its MidLife Upgrade and I wanted to be on it again after her MidLife upgrade so now I am going to have to wait until the Thanksgiving Long Weekend to get on it and hopefully there won't be any problem getting onto her like the on July 28th. Also I have already been on the Coastal Celebration 4 times in the past 12 months compared to the SOVI only being on it once. Although it did get its MidLife upgrade which took like 8 months to do so there is that too. The Reason why I put this here was because I was on the Coastal Celebration when it happened so I thought this would be the right spot to put. [friendly personal-message sent your way]

I just try to be on the new(er) ferries for the Seawest. Spirit or Coastal, it doesn't matter. I have never missed a sailing in the car or on foot. Sorry everyone, I always make sure it is not the (do not kill me) the New West.

Sorry everyone, I always make sure it is not the (do not kill me) the New West. I dodge the New West whenever possible specifically because I like getting soft serve ice cream. That said my usually Friday routine is to bike from UVic to Swartz Bay aiming for the 5pm sailing. I often budget too much time for this and make it on the 4pm New West; this makes the New West one of the ferries I use most, go figure... I suppose I’m saving $5 on ice cream each trip but that hardly feels like a consolation.
