Copied over from the 'Ferries Busy' thread ...
... with that german lemon once again out of service.
While the C Cel has had more than its fair share of issues of late I don't think the choice of the word 'lemon' is particularly appropriate. I don't know if we will ever hear from BC Ferries exactly what caused the latest problem but I am thinking perhaps all of her issues since the beginning of this year are related. At the moment, however, the Alberni looks more reliable than C Cel.
BCFS needs to get new vessel construction underway ASAP.

I completely agree that new vessel construction needs to get started ASAP not only due to frequent breakdowns but clear capacity issues on major routes due to population and tourism increases especially when looking now (Monday at 11:30am) the ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay sold out for the rest of the day. I know they are currently down a boat but I think they really need to start with 5 boat service daily during the summer months on Route 1. I wonder if anyone will think about going the long way through the Gulf Islands with a connection at Mayne or Salt spring Island to go the rest of the way. Hopefully issues can be fixed quickly so the Coastal Celebration is back before the BC Day long Weekend.

There should be 5 on route 1, 3 each on routes 2 & 30, and 2 on route 3. Maybe they should also be looking at a 14th boat for 'contingency' ... Perhaps they should buy a second hand boat as a stop gap in the same way as the Stena Danica was purchased almost 50 years ago. Ideally there would be 13 boats in service next summer with adequate crew numbers to run them all ...

A few weeks back at United Engineering (part of Point Hope Shipyards) machinists were milling a new prop shaft for BC Ferries. They would not say which ship was in need of it; the job was nearly completed. There was a photo board showing the same process for a new shaft for Queen of Alberni, but no indication as to when that was machined.

The latest issue is unrelated to issues at the beginning of the year. The issue this time around is strictly related to the seals on the propeller blades. The Coastal Class have Controllable Pitch Propellers, which are a feat of engineering in itself, but in general, they are more prone to issues with leaks compared to fixed pitch propellers. The majority of the fleet have controllable pitch propellers, with only a handful of vessels with fixed pitch (typically the RAD driven vessels, aside from the Cumberland, and Capilano, if I'm not mistaken). The Celebration had both shafts and propellers removed for regulatory survey as part of the drydocking.

I think I just saw the Celebration do a 180 about 20 minutes out from Tsawwassen.

The CCel returned for a few minutes, carried on with the day and over six sailings made up the lost time. Not bad.

It was the 8 AM sailing from Swartz Bay. It definitely did a 180 off Tsawwassen so as to get its vehicle load pointed in the right direction. I have photos. I was on board the Alberni coming from Duke; my brother was on board the Celebration.
There were also two Seaspan tugs at Tsawwassen. Coincidental? The don’t usually park there …

Ocean Groupe signed a 10 year deal with the Port of Vancouver (2022) for Deltaport and Westshore Terminals. I assume Seaspan has no where to base those tugs. AGREEMENT WITH THE PORT OF VANCOUVER FOR PORT TOWING SERVICES

If that was the 12:00 ex Swartz I was on it. Heading to Auckland by sea.

Coastal Celebration arriving at Tsawwassen, today. For some reason it spun in a full circle before arriving at Tsawwassen, I don't know why.

Why is Coastal Celebration going to Duke Point for October 10 to 18? I don’t understand BC Ferries logic on moving Coastal Inspiration to Swartz Bay just 9 days then back to Duke Point that kinda seems like waste of money and time.
