Is the Spirit of VI going to have any type of refit this winter? I see she is listed for service right through, even though for a short period of time she will be opperating as the #2 ship. Looks to me after doing a quick search around on BCF's cumbersome online reservation pages that the SoVI is out of service between tomorrow and the last Friday in January, when she returns only to do the extra even hour sailings. On the February long weekend she is again #1 out of Swartz Bay. I expect this year's refit for her will be more or less a 'lick & a promise'.

You know, Jim, there's probably a couple of generations on this forum who have never heard the phrase 'a lick and a promise'. For myself, I remember as a little kid my mother actually doing that, so I know what you're on about.

I learned that expression from my wife who is fond of it (the expression) & five years younger than me. It is what she says when we are camped in the middle of nowhere* and a shower is out of the question. * Some place like the Teslin River bank in deepest, darkest, Yukon ...

Searching through my photos, I found this beauty of her in Active Pass on March 11th, 2018. Taken from on board the Coastal Celebration

It was September 11, 2017. I was on Queen of Cumberland, headed for the Pender Islands. As we departed the Bay of Swartz, the SoVI arrived. Also on scene were Mayne Queen and Skeena Queen. It was the start of a gulf islands vacation for us, and I've just now discovered that I hadn't posted this photo. I like the look of the Spirit from this angle. DSC06563 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

I hope BC Ferries improvement upon mid - life refit for Spirit of Vancouver Island: 1. Arbutus Coffee Shop should try to be match the rest of vessel interior because Arbutus Coffee Shop stands out on Spirit of British Columbia. 2. More places to get soft drinks and snacks on board. 3. All seats onboard the vessel match each other because some seats seem out place. 4. Mobile charging placed in seats to provide more, doesn't stand out which would get rid of stands on the Spirit of British Columbia. 5. Add new deck 6 lounge on both side of the vessel.

SoVI seen from Bluffs Park on Galiano Island, on July 2, 2018: For this summer, it was easy to differentiate SoVI from SoBC, other than by the direction and time. The SoVI is simple with just one mast and no LNG vent on her funnel. 5:48pm Setting up for a spiritual meeting outside the pass . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr --------------------- 7:45pm Moving into shadows... . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr -------------------- 9:45pm . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr With navigational markers lit, she makes her way near to Portlock Point on Prevost Island . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Looks like the Spirit of Vancouver Island goes out of service on September 5. Time to prepare her to head over to Poland? We’ve been preparing for almost 2 weeks already! There have been maintenance vehicles on the last few days prepping what can be done while shes still in service. Also graveyard shifts been pulling off extra stores, engine room stuff and whatever else isn’t needed for the last few weeks of service/the trip to Poland. The Renaissance will be coming down from Nanaimo overnight on the 4th (arriving at 0400~) to become the number 2 ship and the Celebration takes over for the SoVI starting with the 0700 sailing on the 5th.

Very cool! I was wondering when the Coastal Renaissance was going to leave Departure Bay, and traced it to the last sailings being on the 4th, and noticed the SoVI being off the schedule. Makes sense that you guys would be working on her now! Now I know to expect to be woken up around 2 am on September 5 as the Coastal Renaissance starts up. :-)

Do you know when the official date when the Spirit of Vancouver Island will leave Deas for Poland?
For dead head moves like the Renaissance going to SWB from Dep Bay do the crew take their own personal vehicles onboard or is the crew transported in a BCF minivan?

Swartz Bay crew is driving up to bring the Renaissance down. I’d say its *almost* for sure that they are driving their personal vehicles up and bringing them back with the ship. I’m not sure of the official Deas departure date but IIRC the BC left in late September so I think somewhere around September 20th would be a good guess??

Long weekend off to a good start.... SOVI must be eager to head to Poland! The long weekend is unfortunately off to a bad start. "An accident involving two crew members has forced BC Ferries to cancel four sailings on its busiest route just ahead of the long weekend. The BC Ferries employees were lowering a rescue boat into the water when something went wrong with the cable brake. They fell about 15 metres to the water, and were taken to hospital with minor injuries."

What not to do on the Friday of a long weekend!

Memo: What not to do on the Friday of a long weekend! Paul's comment brings up a thought about the timing of safety drills. I had a passionate back-and-forth on a Galiano FB page with a person who argued that BC Ferries was foolish to do a drill at a busy time of service (like the start of a long weekend). I argued that drills are important at any time, and that sea travel has risks, and that drills are important regardless of the calendar. There seems to be a mentality that sea travel is routine and things to do with safety are inconveniences. I think that's a crazy thought. I also think that the bigger issue is that BC Ferries has had two incidents of rescue davits failing, in the past few months. It's injured workers, and it's shown that the public is at risk in the event of an emergency. So yes, what not to do on the Friday of a long weekend is to not have a disaster, because the ferry wasn't prepared.

Do you know when the official date when the Spirit of Vancouver Island will leave Deas for Poland? Check daily on the pilotage site:
It may show the date and estimated time of sailing.
Among other things, one of two remaining (out of three) "Brinkmann" breakers may be welded at the bow.
