Another early Spirit picture - not that old, but pre digital... JST photo © - hosted on FlickerSpirit of Vancouver Island in Active Pass, on a fine August day in 1996.

After surviving the Charlottes about a month ago my camera and I have come south again. I had quite a nice time on Galiano Island yesterday. I will post one picture now, as I am on a dial-up connection. More later when I get onto a faster connection. JST photo © - hosted on FlickerSpirit of Vancouver Island en route to Tsawwassen viewed from the Beach at Galiano's pioneer cemetery opposite Helen Point - a ferry lover's dream photo location.

Graham has coined the phrase "When ferries meet". In honour of that I give you... Queen of Nanaimo & Spirit of Vancouver Island off south entrance to Active Pass. Photo taken from the Bluffs Park.

Those are fantastic photos of the Spirits, pre-Coastalization, and very good quality, too. I have a few pictures of SOVI taken back in the late 90's, but I had a crappy camera back then, and it was pre digital, so my pictures aren't that great; so, it's really nice to see pictures like these.

Thank you, Kahloke. At this time the ferry photography bug had just hit me, but, as is quite prevalent today as one of my top motivations, it wasn't just the want to snap away that motivated me, it was almost moreso a want to document history which worked out well especially considering that I had no idea at the time that they would change her interior so drastically. Frankly to this day I'm amazed at the foresight I had somewhere in my subconscience to capture some shots in a series from a single pivot point in anticipation of possibly stitching the images together as I know how to now.

A couple of photos taken from the bluffs on Sunday:
A couple of 1pm spook sailings passing by each other in Active PassSoVI and what turned out to be the Bowen Queen, heading from VI to Nanaimo to replace the Quinsam for a few months

When the Spirits were built, which vessels did they replace?

When the Spirits were built, which vessels did they replace? I will keep this brief, because this is a photo thread (if you want to turn this into back-and-forth, please do this in a discussion thread. But short Q&A is ok here.) Queens of Victoria and Esquimalt.

Great shots, Scott! How do you get those night-shots so sharp and still? I assume you're using a tripod, but when I try that on the ferries, all the vibration of the ship messes it up.
