AIS tells me that Spirit of VI is maybe not doing well? She did a few laps in Saanich Inlet and took the long way to TSA. Any idea as she was just refit Service notice says she's having issues with "the hydraulic control of the port pitch propeller." Looks like they're still troubleshooting at this point as she is expected to be out of service all weekend. www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=1022532

Here is the link from the Vancouver Sun mentioning the SOVI's problems. vancouversun.com/news/local-news/spirit-of-vancouver-island-out-of-service-this-weekend-b-c-ferries-changes-scheduleThe photo of the vessel is a retro one, pre-slug era. The Sun link shows which sailings are added on both days. The NW will do two round trips from TSA at 1200h and 1600h on Saturday. For Sunday, the NW will do three round trips leaving TSA at 1000h, 1400h, and 1800h. This means there will be a 2000h from SWB and the Renaissance will do an extra trip from SWB at 2300h. Route 30 will also add a round trip on Sunday (515h/745h).

SOVI will be out of service for another week+ to repair the propeller hub. Sounds like she is heading for drydock on the 31st and will be there for a week. Considering the propellers and CPP system are due to be replaced in the MLU, I'm wondering what their current state of repair and/or condition is? It seems unusual to me that they would not last the lifetime of the vessel.
The impact this is having on the weekend's "extra" sailings certainly reinforces the Spirits' status as the backbone of the fleet.

Looks like SoVI is returning to service a day early! Current conditons pages shows her as the vessel for the 11:00 sailing out of Swartz Bay today. Just in time too, it apperently the CRen is having some mechanical issues of her own now. www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=1025647

I'm sure at some point someone asked this however... has either the SoVI or SoBC ever berthed at any formal BCF terminal except for Tsawassen or Swartz Bay? Like even during sea trials or initial delivery way back? And if so/not, is there a proprietary berth pattern for the Spirit Class?
Thanks!

I know for sure Duke Point terminal's berth was built to accommodate the Spirit class ships if needed. However I am not aware of any of the Spirits ever docking in any other terminal's other than Tsawwassen, Swartz Bay and Deas.
I spotted one of the Spirits off of Five Fingers Islands in Nanaimo only once and have never seen them docked in Nanaimo, Horseshoe Bay, Langdale or Duke Point.
If Swartz Bay terminal was ever closed down for anything they could fit the Spirits at Duke Point if needed.

It is my understanding that a Spirit can be berthed in any berth that will accommodate a Coastal class vessel. I suspect that Spirits have been berthed in the past at one or more terminals beyond Route One, and I am pretty sure we discussed this previously on this forum ... The turn around room at both Route Two terminals might be a bit tight.

Ok lets try this again.
The Problem is not necessary sailing from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay. Its quite the same for all classes of ferries, Sail out of the berth and right into the berth at HB, all major ships in the fleet can handle this, Its a no Brainer. The Problem is the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay direction. It takes time for the vessle to back out of HB and make the turn out towards Cape Roger Curtis. The main Problem is Departure Bay, The ship has to take it nice and slow, Prob a lot slower for a large Spirit to make that turn into Berth 3. Yes they all CAN do it, but it takes time, that eats into the schedual. You have seen what happens when the Queen of Esquimalt replaced the Queen of Cowichan and the New West replaced the Oak Bay on rt 2 in the mid 2000's durring the C Class mid-life.
The Fact is the Spirits and the V's or any single ended ship is much better suited for the shorter rt 1 service. This is one reason why all new ships since the Pacificats are double Ended, Just Drive in and Drive out. simple.

Anyone know why the Spirit of Vancouver Island didn’t sail today and the Coastal Renaissance is in her place?

Is the Spirit of VI going to have any type of refit this winter? I see she is listed for service right through, even though for a short period of time she will be opperating as the #2 ship.
I am wondering, because the Coastal Celebration and Coastal Inspiration needs thier refit too and trying to figure out how, before the shoulder and peak seasons start up again.
Usualy Celebration is replaced by the Renaissance before the Renaissance replaces the Inspiration. Just wondering if anyone has any "Inside" info.

Tomorrow. I’m on the SoVI now and they’re emptying it, figuratively, as we sail!
