Haha! Perhaps It's the best set of seats on board! I think they are seats left over from the Queen of Burnaby/Princess Margueritte III/Royal Victorian conversion. I could be wrong though.

Excellent photos, Retro! You happened to see her on the day she went for sea trials down Saanich Inlet. I took a closer look at this one particular photo, just to get a better look at how nice and clean that port side solarium looks now.....I happen to know a certain someone who was cleaning that area with a pressure washer at the time of the crash last week ..... www.flickr.com/photos/bctransit/4878155082/sizes/o/in/photostream/

Thanks, Ferryman!
My timing on leaving was quite coincidental. I had finished capturing the shots that I wanted at Swartz Bay a while before the departure of our Coastal Celebration's scheduled 4pm sailing but decided to wait for it mainly in order to be able to capture our Queen of New Westminster while passing in Active Pass (but also to avoid the monotony of yet again travelling aboard a 'Spook'), and just so happened to depart Swartz Bay Terminal only minutes after getting to watch that rare sight of the 'Nanny leaving. My excitement at that possibility only began a little while ahead of boarding while noticing the bridge crew on the 'Nanny preparing and the radar units spinning. It was neat to see her virtually heading into the sunset toward Saanich Inlet as we left for Tsawwassen, rounding Piers Island.

Early 1980's photo of a ferry from the booklet "BC Ferries - Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways". The photography and publishing was done by John L. Barnard Photographs Ltd. of Sidney BC - I'm just guessing that it might be the Queen of Nanaimo.

Are freighters and other large vessels no longer allowed in Active Pass? I have no recollection of ever seeing them there. Knowing how narrow the pass is, and the amount of traffic entering and leaving Metro Vancouver, it would definitely be a point of major congestion. So were the big rigs of the sea forced to leave that area, or did they leave voluntarily in favour of safer, wider waters?

I believe I've seen a freighter or two in Active Pass late at night on SIITech.

The freighters probably use boundary pass by Eastpoint on Saturna instead of Active Pass as it's more wider through there! That is just my guess though!

Neat angles! That's a fair bit of gunk down on the bow. I'm surprised all those barnacles were able to grow there, what with all the water crashing up against her bow as she motors along day after day, month after month, year after year.

I read somewhere that BCF uses a special bottom paint that becomes very smooth after a bit of use which prevents the growth of barnacles, seaweed, etc. and helps increase service speed.

With a free day on hand, I jumped at the opportunity last Wednesday to go out and see what I could capture of the aftermath of our Queen of Nanaimo's unfortunate hard landing at Village Bay Terminal, Mayne Island, the day before. As I had already noticed the night before by way of online vessel tracking, I was in for a pleasant surprise: The rare sight of an unlifted Spaulding-7-sister at Swartz bay. I thought they'd repaired all the damage at the Village Bay berth? I guess not, then.

I thought they'd repaired all the damage at the Village Bay berth? I guess not, then. He took those photos immediately after the Nanaimo left the dock the day of the hard landing...The damaged wingwall pads were replaced which was why that dock was out of comission for about 2-3 weeks.

In July my wife and I did a mini vacation in the Gulf Islands, visiting Saturna, Mayne & Galiano. We had superb weather, and first rate ferry watching. I now travel with two cameras - one fitted with a wide angle zoom, the other with a telephoto zoom. Ferries were, as often as not, my photo subjects. One can't go far in the Gulf Islands and not stumble upon the Queen of Nanaimo. Here are four photos of her that I shot while on that lovely July vacation... All these photos are hosted on my Flickr Site. Clicking on the photos will take you to a much larger version...
