We're gonna be taking the Burnaby on Dec. 26 - Comox to Powell River. Gotta get as many trips in on her and the Nanaimo as possible, now that their retirement is imminent.

I don't know if these retirements could be described as 'imminent'. I don't believe BCFS has chosen a design for the replacement vessels, let alone contracting with some ship yard to build them. It will be four years or longer before we say good bye to the Nanaimo and her twin.

Queen of Nanaimo at Village Bay, Mayne Island. Berth #2. - November 10, 2012. Seen from the Queen of Cumberland, as we waited for her to vacate the berth.

Regarding the latest photo, Ferryman, what is the grey ramp-like thing in the foreground and what is it used for? And what are those 6 brown things in the background in two lines - are they vents?
Nice perspective btw - not one we see too often!

The "6 brown things" are sky lights for each solarium I believe.
Interesting shot, as this area is not accessible by passengers (crew only). You must have known someone to get up there..

You can sneak into all sorts of out of bounds areas. I used to like sitting in one of those areas on the car deck right at the stern on either side of the car deck doors...where those three openings are for rope to go through.

You must have known someone to get up there.. Crew area only indeed. I didn't have to know anyone to get up there, since I'm a crew member myself. Variable Pitch was quite right with that the brown squares in a line happen to be the skylights for the covered portions of the solariums. As for the ramp-like thing, I've never been too clear on its actual purpose. It's too short to be used as any sort of gangway to board the vessel if it's tied up alongside a jetty. I'll try and find out what it's for You can sneak into all sorts of out of bounds areas. I used to like sitting in one of those areas on the car deck right at the stern on either side of the car deck doors...where those three openings are for rope to go through. Going out of bounds is considered trespassing and a breach of security. The police could actually be called if you're caught. Not to mention, you could find yourself in an unsafe position very quickly if you end up in the wrong area. Definitely an interesting perspective from that area though.

Great photo, Chris! That is not a perspective you seen too often.
There's also one of those grey ramp things on the roof of the Queen of Surrey. I have no idea what it's used for.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say, based on where it is, the length and more particularly the width, it may be used to access the wheelhouse top. There's two access points between the railings and fairly narrow if I remember correctly. Doesn't look long enough to reach down to the sun deck, but pics can be deceiving...

Queen of Nanaimo in Active Pass - spring/summer 2003. The Nanaimo was, AFAIK, the first vessel in the BCF fleet to receive the 'slug' livery following the creation of BC Ferry Services early in 2003. With luck it just might be the first vessel to loose them. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size]
