As the Queen of Nanaimo makes her way to Swartz Bay just after noon today does anyone know when the last time she was there in service???

Couple of photos of the Queen of Nanaimo that I qucikly snapped today at work. I thought I'd share since this the first time the Nanny has been at SWB in a long time. With the new SGI schedule it looks like she will be visiting us at Swartz every Sunday at 12:20 though! Queen of Nanaimo just after pulling in to berth 2 at Swartz Bay QoN after discharging traffic. And QoN departing berth 2 for Long Harbour, SSI. The Nanny left Swartz nearly empty, with a load of just 5 underheights. I expect the main purpose of her Sunday visits to SWB is to make up for the loss in Route 5/5A capacity due to the Sunday DG sailings and not to transport SWB to Long Harbour traffic. But it will be interesting to see if the traffic on this run (I wonder if I should be calling it route 5 or route 9...) picks up in the summer. EDIT: I should also point out that the Nanny was about 40 minutes delayed from her scheduled 12:30 departure today and there were about a dozen or so vehicles who were in the Long Harbour lanes but opted for the 1 o'clock sailing on the Skeena to Fulford when they found out the Nanaimo was late.

I was at the end of Scott Point Road near Long Harbour (Salt Spring Island) last night when Queen of Nanaimo finished her day rounding Nose Point at 11:30pm Here's what I saw, in the dark: DSC01005a by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr The video: - It's hard filming in the dark, and I was interested in seeing what it would look like, seeing how close it is to the experience of seeing a mostly-dark ship passing you in the night with just the navigation lights visible.

Will the Nanaimo actually aloud to sail after she's retired from BCFerries? I mean she is 53 years old and that is a huge voyage to fiji and the refit is huge. Also I wish that BCFerries could salvage some things from the Queen of Nanaimo like her Airchime whistle and her wheel. Also does anyone know if the crew on the Nanaimo would let 13 year old teens on the bridge for a bridge tour?

I am curious about the claim that she will carry 60 "trucks" (whatever that means). I'd expect some heavy modification before that could happen (ie goodbye ramp decks).

George Goundar is shrewd and is the transportation king! From reading the article from Fiji, he has buses that will connect with his ships. It would almost make sense to get his ship mods done here so he can put the Nanaimo to work right away?

I cannot imagine the cost of work and surrounding safety requirements would make modifications in Canada financially practical.

Given Mr.Goundar's engineering background, he must believe that the 'Nanny' is in decent enough shape to spend the money he's going to invest in her modifications etc. Maybe 'roeco's' comment as to buying the 'Burnaby' for spare parts isn't a bad idea. Yes, the 'Nanny' is ancient by Canadian standards, but bear in mind she comes equipped with all the lifesaving, evacuation systems etc. that are well ahead of current Fijian standard requirements. There was rumour that Goundar shipping was going to purchase a vessel out of Singapore. Is this still in the works or? With the addition of buses to the overall system, Mr. Goundar is demonstrating a real commitment to improving the overall transportation infrastructure for the people of the Fijian Island nation. Good on him! Anyone want to sign up for the 'Nanny's journey to Fiji when she's ready to go? Hmmm.

The Nanaimo could be quite succesfull in Fiji given she has a much bigger capacity than any other vessels he has for a passenger heavy route

I think the story is false,I spoke with Goundar last nite as I know him very well,I was his C/E for many years. It was a set up from the Fijian living out of the country,it political and the people are trying hard to find out if he bought the ferries in Canada. At the moment he just arrived back from New Zealand ,took the Queen of Chilliwack for dry dock 10 days. He did not purchase the Nanny and is taking the papers to court of the false news .What he told me that he wanted both vessels but the ferries had other plans .It is true that he is purchasing a ferry form Singapore that could carry total of 60 trucks buses and small cars. I know that Goundar has done his homework and that was his background. When he started with the ferries he was a deck hand and oiler in Horseshoe Bay, He was always working hard and never had a job that he could not handle.For those who work with him knows that he dont like lazy people to work with, cause he will be working also. We all need to give him the respect and for the great work he has done for his country. Great guy to work with,

Fascinating, as Spock used to say. I guess we'll see. I continue to be somewhat appalled, despite the enthusiasm of the fans, that worn out boats find new homes in third world countries. The ' Nanaimo seems like the unlikeliest one yet... a boat designed for the sheltered Salish Sea, traversing the open Pacific.

He is more interested on the AMHS ferry the MV Taku, according to him he has visited the vessel last month,its a nicer vessel the only problem is that AMHS has remove 90 % of the Navigation and 100% of the fire fighting equipment.Its only good for scrap but AMHS is trying to sell the vessel as ready for operation which is not true.According to Goundar regarding the Nanny he is not sure who bought it or if it is still for sale.

What's up with all the fuelling delays for the Nanaimo this summer? There's so many they actually sent out a service notice forecasting them for the next few weeks. Is this an error with the new summer schedule?

Service notice claims one of the fuel tanks is out of service - so they can only bunker a smaller capacity of fuel.
