An ailing & worn out Queen of Nanaimo limps toward Tsawwassen Terminal on 27 July 2017. The Nanaimo was pulled out of service a few minutes later, just as soon as it completed this run. It remains out of service as I type this ... The summer situation of an ailing Queen of Nanaimo, with inadequate vessel replacement flexibility, is exactly what BC Ferries was planning to avoid when determining the timing of the 3 Salish Class ship's construction/delivery timelines.
They wanted the Raven in place and trained-up and ready for summer 2017 service. They knew that if Raven wasn't delivered by a certain date in the Spring, then the whole summer season for Raven would be lost, and they'd need to work Q-Nanaimo for an unwanted last season.
So I'm assuming that there were late-delivery penalty clauses in the Remontowa contract, and I'm assuming that those clauses have been enacted for Salish Raven.

September 12, 2016.
It seems so long ago now, but that was my final trip on Queen of Nanaimo. I'm thankful that I took lots of video on that day.

Queen of Nanaimo is now leaving Tsawwassen for the final time in her life, headed for Deas Dock. Is it confirmed she won't be repaired or just speculation? Somewhere in between. My choice to use words that made it sound final. Obviously we won't know for sure until we hear something definitive from the company. My intent in posting was to give people an opportunity to see her move for likely the final time, if they are in that Fraser River delta area.

....and now she's arrived at Deas.
Not at a drydock.
Not at a terminal.
She's going to be near her sister the 'Burnaby.
They can reminisce about old times on Route-2.

Oh my I hope I didn't miss a last sailing opportunity! I tried three times to Nanaimo; out of service every time. I suppose there's some poetic justice there, though.

No BCFS announcement yet, but now a buddy of mine has heard a Victoria news report on the end of the Queen of Nanaimo.
I will keep looking for some sort of public news report, to be able to publicly confirm what I've privately heard.

If we were keeping a scrapbook of Queen of Nanaimo lifelong events, we'd include this one near the end.
We await the official update, and we're ravin' interested in what happens next, with eventual "Two Bird Service" on Route-9. I hear flapping sounds...

In so many ways this situation was predictable. I hope the Raven lands promptly. There's many here more educated than I, obviously, but I do know a lot of Salt Spring crew got a head start when the Nanaimo went down the first time this summer because they double-crewed the Eagle for familiarization on several of the sailings I was on.
It's a shame that the Nanaimo's end came so unceremoniously, but as I said above it's a poetic end to a trouble couple of years. When service notices were needed every time they took on fuel it seemed like this old girl was limping a bit too much.

It sounds like everyone hear thinks the queen of Nanaimo has served her last day but it seems that bcferries still wants her back and serving 'till fall. So I wonder what will happen. I want one more trip on the queen but alas, the vessel may just have served her final voyage

Here's a video of what is presumably her last turn out of Tsawwassen as she was moved to Deas Dock. There was a sense of occasion to this voyage. The video isn't the highest quality and I've seen a better one from shore but for now it'll have to do. We cranked up the PA to play her off with Heart of Oak; I believe there were several bewildered passengers aboard the incoming Coastal Celebration.

Events suggest a parts transplant? Sadly no. I think there were lots of parts transplants from Burnaby to Nanaimo in the recent months, but now both ships are done and waiting sale for scrap.

I think BC Ferries hopes to have her back by July 31; if, there is a week delay in entering service again, I could see BC Ferries speeding up sea trails on the Salish Revan just incase if the time comes for BC Ferries just to up gave fixing her because it is weeks until her retirement from the fleet.

Like the old saying goes: "You snooze, you lose" I had planned on doing a 'last-run' on the 'Nanny' during her Summer, Sunday schedule but, alas... Perhaps a trip to Deas to get a shot of the two sisters would be a fitting and lasting reminder that one should never assume the longevity of someone or something in their elder years.

By any chance did you record some Queen of Nanaimo retirement videos? There are a couple of videos on YouTube on her final journey from Tsawwassen to Fraser Marine Unit (Deas Dock) on morning of July 29, 2017 Departing Tsawwassen, with "Heart of Oak" playing on the ship Arriving at FMU with "Scotland the Brave" playing on the ship ----------- That's all I saw from Saturday. On my last trip on her (which was over a year ago), I did full trip video of a milk-run round trip. Member "Curtis" has a walkthrough video on his YouTube channel. Is this what you had in mind, Charles?
