By any chance did you record some Queen of Nanaimo retirement videos? There is a Retirement Walkthrough coming that I recorded that same day. There will also be a whistle recording posted around the same time. The Salish Eagle is first in line though so expect those videos around Mid-August.

This would require cars to spin around to get off at Long Harbor, but that may have been fewer cars than inbound SGI cars having to spin around to get off at Swartz Bay under the previous arrangement.

We hoped that by backing into Swartz Bay we could more easily set up the car deck as we loaded traffic throughout the gulf islands. It was something of a guessing game regarding traffic levels since there were no reservations on that part of the route and so we wanted to be able to get everyone on without losing space to have to turn traffic. In the end it is up to the discretion of the Captain and Chief Officer.

Specialized technicians are currently working to determine the exact cause of the mechanical issue. The Salish Eagle will continue to provide service to this route and a replacement vessel, the MV Bowen Queen, began service at 2:35 p.m. on Friday from Long Harbour on Salt Spring Island and will continue to service all of the Queen of Nanaimo scheduled sailings through to the end of day Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Alternatively, travel options from Tsawwassen or Swartz Bay with a connection to Salt Spring Island or another Southern Gulf Island are available. Passengers are advised that the MV Bowen Queen is not equipped with an elevator. Washroom facilities are available for customers who remain on the car deck during the voyage. Limited food services will be available on the Bowen Queen. We appreciate the impact that this vessel substitution has on our customers and we thank you for your patience while we work to return the Queen of Nanaimo to service. An update will be provided as soon as one becomes available. While the news release stops short of saying the Nanaimo has been retired, with the Raven entering service, this obviously means the Nanaimo is not required unless there's a major breakdown (...and the Nanaimo's repaired).
[speculation]With the Nanaimo in no rush to go anywhere, it will likely be repaired (with some parts from the Burnaby?) prior to possession by its new owner. I know it was a major shock to all of us for her to leave as abruptly as she did on Saturday morning, so with no mention of retirement, maybe there's still a chance of a farewell cruise sometime in the future?[/speculation]

Of course, if I understand correctly BCFS counted on having the higher capacity of the Nanaimo when it sold reservations and determined the schedule for the summer. It also counted on using the Salish Eagle on 9A so they could figure out load patterns etc with less stress than doing it on the prime boat with full loads and little slack in the schedule. To provide equivalent or greater capacity with two bird service the Eagle would need to be doing at least another trip a day.
We may yet see the Nanaimo return to service before the summer is out.

What the article does not mention is that had the Salish Raven & its sisters been delivered on schedule (as per the contract between the shipyard & BCFS) this ongoing 'crisis' would not have happened.

The service notice now says that the Salish Raven will be sailing out of Tsawwassen "for the summer" with the ' Eagle at Long Harbour, so I think that probably removes the last smidgen of doubt about the ' Nanaimo coming back.

I just drove past the maintenance centre on Hwy 99. Didn't see any flags on the Nanaimo - Canadian flag is gone from her stern, and the BCF and Provincial flags are gone from her mast.
I don't know if that means anything, but... I'm worried. I love the Nanny.
If anything, it's nice to see the two Burnaby sisters together in dock...

I think this is typical of what WSF does aboard its vessels moored at the Eagle Harbor Vessel Maintenance Center. They only display the flags when they are active and/or in service, down at night and/or out of service.

I just realized, hasn't the Nanaimo had quite a few propeller issues recently? Or am I thinking of a different vessel?

vancouversun.com/news/local-news/salish-raven-to-go-into-service-early-on-southern-gulf-islands-ferry-runThis article has a bit more detail. Tl;dr - it appears they're actually still trying to fix the Nanaimo but even if it's repaired it'll be a reserve vessel. I'm hesitant to criticize BC Ferries, who I have criticized a lot in past for lack of contingency, for getting the Nanaimo back on line. But it just makes so little sense to me. Is there a clause that's it's been sold in operational condition. I'm not much of a conspiracy thearist, but there is a contingency vessel - the Bowen Queen. It worked.

I sent an email to a bcferries customer service employee and they said that she has not been retired and will be repaired but will not be used on the tsawwasen gulf islands route most likely ever again. She will be a "back up vessel" for the rest of the summer and will probably be retired at the end of the summer/fall

She will be a "back up vessel" for the rest of the summer and will probably be retired at the end of the summer/fall When members posted news that the 'Nanny' was going to FMU, I was sure that it meant the death knell for the old girl. Thinking was that the prop issue repair required a dry-docking and since she was going to FMU, BC Ferries would spin a tale saying that upon serious attempts to do the repairs, engineers have deemed the problem too difficult or expensive to undertake at this point in the 'Nanny's' career thereby forcing BC Ferries to announce a premature 'retirement'. BUT, alas it appears we have a bit of a reprieve, albeit as 'charles' reports, it is unlikely that the 'Nanny' will ever be used on the TSW-Gulf-Islands run again. For those of us who have been caught sleeping at the switch, I assume we'll have to have some cash on hand, day-bag packed and ready to go, several custom designed excuses formulated, (if required), to be away from ones' employ, in order to do a final 'Nanny' trip, and being able to put an 'X' on ones' maritime bucket list.

Yeah, having been blindsided by the Nanaimo breakdown in terms of having a chance to say my proper "goodbyes", I'll probably be willing to travel to get one final trip on her. This ship is by far the most important one in my 45 years of fairly prolific ferry travel.

By any chance did you record some Queen of Nanaimo retirement videos? There are a couple of videos on YouTube on her final journey from Tsawwassen to Fraser Marine Unit (Deas Dock) on morning of July 29, 2017 Departing Tsawwassen, with "Heart of Oak" playing on the ship Arriving at FMU with "Scotland the Brave" playing on the ship ----------- That's all I saw from Saturday. On my last trip on her (which was over a year ago), I did full trip video of a milk-run round trip. Member "Curtis" has a walkthrough video on his YouTube channel. Is this what you had in mind, Charles? This is FRigging AWESOME! WHAT A COOL SEND OFF!
