Queen of Burnaby at sunset on June 8, 2013. - Westview (Powell River). With North Island Princess. ------------------- VIDEO of the entire 90-minute sunset/dusk sequence (sped up, of course). 3 different parts of the video. 1) Entire sequence, sped-up 50x 2) Entire sequence, sped-up 10x (that's what the subtitles were geared for). 3) Real-speed sequence of Burnaby's departure and NIP's departure.

Queen of Burnaby video compilation, from June 8-9, 2013. - shore view of arrival at Little River - shore view of arrival & departure at Westview. - on-board and shore views of the rope toss from bow to dolphin during Westview arrivals - comparison of 2 different soundings of her horn (sounds a bit different from one sailing to the next)

Allow me to put a couple of items together, to see if they are the same issue. Exhibit 1: from page #15 of this: foi.bcferries.com/Intermediate_Class_Ferry_Application.pdfExhibit 2: - my sped-up video of a route-17 round trip. check out the wobbly course-direction on the 100x sped-up version at the start of this video. The 100x video is a bit tough to watch on the trip towards Comox (from 0:50 to 1:30 on my video), because the ship is so unsteady in her direction. There was no marine traffic that we were trying to avoid. - Does this look like a ship with a steering problem?================ I'm no expert. Is what my video shows (the wobbly course-changing ship) related to what is said in the report? - what do others think?

I'm not an expert either, but I'll weigh in with an opinion.
A pitch control problem could cause an imbalance of thrust between the two propellers. This could give the ship a tendency to want to turn, requiring counter-helm to compensate. If it was a constant issue ie. the difference in pitch is constant, theoretically the quartermaster could provide a set amount of counter-helm and maintain a relatively straight course. If it's a true control problem, and the pitch is varying intermittently, it could theoretically cause the inconsistent heading shown in the video, because the quartermaster is constantly having to change the helm. I'm not familiar with the method of pitch control employed so I couldn't even guess as to possible problems. The last ship I was on had electronic control systems for pitch... I highly doubt the B class use electronics.
There are many other factors that could be at play as well. Environmental effects, such as wind, waves, current etc have a huge effect on the steering of the ship.
I just tried to look up the QoBurnaby to see if she has any conditions of class, indicating a machinery defect, but it seems she's registered with Lloyd's Register, which doesn't publish a list online.

I wasn't happy with the speeds of the version of my sped-up video of "Powell River ferry sunset." 100x was too fast and 10x was too slow, for my liking. So I've done a new one at 25x speed. - I like this speed better, in a Goldilocks type of way.
Here it is, featuring North Island Princess and Queen of Burnaby, from June 8 2013.

On September 8, 2012, I photographed the test deployment of the Queen of Burnaby's life saving system. Those photos are posted earlier in this thread, from that date.
- I wanted to see how my many photos would look in a true time-lapse collage, and so I used my software to create that. Because I didn't shoot the photos with the experienced idea of using them for a time-lapse, the result is a bit jumpy at times, with different zooms.
But it is a neat effect. Most of the photos appear for 0.5 seconds each.
This was 90 minutes of work for me, on my computer today.

Excerpt from the Ferry Commissioner's report approving the replacement of the Queen of Burnaby. - the relevant item here is the last part of this quote, re the reason why so many 'Burnaby sailings are cancelled by weather.

Hope they give the old girl one last paint job, so she can end her days with some dignity. Not likely, I suspect.

What vessel will replace the Burnaby during its refit? The I-Sky?

An open deck ferry in open water really makes sence! Wouldent the Chilllwack be a better replacement?

An open deck ferry in open water really makes sence! Wouldent the Chilllwack be a better replacement? I think BC Ferries might be doing this to prove that the I-Sky actually can handle rough seas. It will demonstrate its magical abilities to keep waves off the car deck. Actually, when I emailed BCF with comments about the new intermediate ferries and mentioned the fallacies of having an open-decked ferry on a route across the Strait of Georgia, they replied to my comment and explained that the I-Sky's hull is designed so that it repels waves from the car deck. They even mentioned that they took the I-Sky out in the Strait in 55-knot winds and no waves came up on the car deck. I'm kind of skeptical about that, and won't believe any claims about the Island Sky's seakeeping abilities until I see it in action. Even if the I-Sky can handle rough seas as well as BCF says, I still think that its future sisters should have full-height doors on each end just to give drivers some extra peace of mind and reassurance that their cars won't get any saltwater spray on them. I'm glad the ferry commissioner encouraged BCF to have bow/stern doors on the new ICFs when he approved their application.

I agree with you about BC Ferries showing the Island Sky design can be safe in rough seas. I think the design will have bigger side walls like the Queen of the Islands.

Boarding Boarding the Queen of Burnaby at Westview. by CS16 Photography, on Flickr One good thing that came out of this trip was I got some practice doing nighttime photography with a tripod.
