More 'Burnaby pictures from Route-9 on October 15, 2010: - with Mt. Baker. Looks like they modified the gate for the overhead walkway! A similar modification was made to the Queen of Nanaimo when berth 2 at Tsawwassen was rebuilt a few years ago. I really didn't think they'd to the same to the Burnaby since she's just "on loan" but I guess they thought it was worthwhile since she'll be the regular relief vessel on rt9 for the foreseeable future

Re: Overhead walkway gates: Yes they were installed last minute. The original gates are even still there too, however I think these new gates jeopardize the use of the old gates now. These were put in because the overhead walkway apron needs to be fully extended, and the location of the old gates would not allow for that. Some Burnaby photos from today: Helipad Deck 6 Funnel up close Golden Sundeck Active Pass wake Mirrlees looking great Mitsubishi bow prop engine, which is her one and only bow propellar. Where as the Queen of Nanaimo has this bow prop engine, as well as one a few meters aft that is the original Caterpillar bow prop

Aaaaah! That sundeck looks horrible! They couldn't have at least put a coat of paint on that last summer one day?

Boy, the Burnaby looks in sorry shape from the outside - rust city!! Flug, what's the state/condition inside? Can't remember exactly, but seems she's not scheduled for any sort of refit this year?

You know what? I actually like the Burnaby better than the Nanaimo! It's got that Queen of Vancouver feeling to it when I walk through the mid ship lounge not having a huge Gift Shop take up room and having less seating. She seems to have alot more space. She needs a new paint job though as she is pretty rusty and her deck too is in pretty bad shape. I think BC Ferries should of taken her out before the Nanaimo. I really like the interior of the Burnaby is nicer I think than the Nanaimo as I think the carpeting makes her look nicer than the hard bare floors on the Nanaimo. They should move her to route 9 and put the Nanaimo up at Comox. I did see a female deckhand cleaning the outside windows on the Burnaby. Maybe the route 9 crews will take better care of her while she is on the route!

that pic. of the golden sundeck is illuminating, but the shot comeing into tsawwassen is a particularly good view, I remember taking a look at her when she was the short lived Victorian Princess in that unfortunate venture that was suposed to replace the Princess Margurete. wow did those CPR princesses ever look better to a ship lovers eye. mrdot.

Just rode the Burnaby today and the Long Harbour crew appears to be taking care of her...today they were washing all the windows from the outside on deck 4. I found that only a small area is in need of some major TLC...mainly deck 5 (sundeck) aft...that area has a definite "Queen of Esquimalt" feel about her. When she has her refit next year I'm sure all the rust will be taken care of. It was a full sailing today back to Tsawwassen. It felt weird to be on the Burnaby with so many other passengers...doesn't usually happen on rt17

A postcard of the Queen of Burnaby at Horseshoe Bay. Does this totem pole still exist? I don't remember seeing it there, ever.

I definitely remember the totem when I was young. I particularly remember some kid trying to climb it and getting royally chewed out by an adult I presume was a parent.

Awesome shot, Jim. Just because I know someone is gonna immediately ask why she has a list, I figure I'll jump the gun and explain why. No, she isn't taking on water, and no she doesn't have an off center engine casing like the Chetzmoka. Since shes on the heading home point in Route 9, she has a port side list because Long Harbour bound traffic will be stowed on the port side facing the stern. Galiano, Mayne and possibly Otter Bay are usually stowed on the Starboard side. When shes on the heading to Tsawwassen part on Route 9, she'll have a starboard side list because the majority of the vehicles are stowed on the starboard side. Not to steal the flame from Jim, but I'd like to post a photo of the colours from a previous livery trying to re-emerge at the galley flats (aft end of Deck 4). This is the PMIII blue, which you can see a few posts up above this one where the stern was pretty much completely blue.

Does it make any difference with steering the ship, when it's listed to starboard or port? If you're asking if the ship lists when it steers, yes. If you're asking if steering ability is affected when a ship has a list, I have no idea, but I'd like to find out, too. Is propulsion compromised too? Not to steal the flame from Jim, but I'd like to post a photo of the colours from a previous livery trying to re-emerge at the galley flats (aft end of Deck 4). This is the PMIII blue, which you can see a few posts up above this one where the stern was pretty much completely blue. So, what's being said is that the QoB hasn't gotten a full paint-job in 12 years, since she was sold back to BCF? That's horrible...

List:
When a ship has a list it will definitely try and steer in the opposite direction of the list, it carves. Its the same principle that allows you to steer a skateboard or skis by leaning. Weather it is of notable concern or not is a question for Chris. I would assume you'd notice it, but your brain would be correcting for it automatically when your steering and you probably wouldn't notice.
Paint:
The Saanich, Vancouver and Esquimalt all still had their original baby blue paint underneath the existing paint when I saw them in hteir last days at BCF. You could see the creases in the paint were the old logo's used to be.
If I recall correctly the Naniamo still has some of here too. It usually just all covered up much better than what the Burnaby is currently showing. As long as the paint isn't flaking off its good to leave the old stuff there, just adds more protection. Of course there will come a point where there is too much paint built up and it could cause a problem. Usually we think they look gross long before they truly need new paint.
Cheers,
