Why were they using the ramp? They weren't using it on the day I was aboard. As far as I know, the only times that they get used is if and when a ship is using Langdale's old berth, and has a full load. That's a rare thing. But because they never know if they are going to need to use it, they don't have traffic parked on the ramp or beside it. So it's always unused space on the car deck.

I remember when cars used to park on them. I believe all ships with a upper car deck should have them because you just never know. For example what would happen if the upper ramp at Duke Point had a mechanical proplem and could not be used and you are stuck on the upper deck on the Alberni, Inspiration, New West or even the Spirit class on rt 1?

Does the Alberni also have an articlating ramp??.. I know it gets used on the Surrey and Coquitlam more than any other ships in that Class as they are usually the onles on Langdale most
..! Mind u has the Oak Bay ever been on the HB-Langdale route in recent years??

No to Alberni and ramps.
The Oak Bay has had a few random appearances on Route 3; mostly when there's been a break down or something similar. Nothing more than one of type things that I can remember.

Certainly not a close-up enough shot for Shipspotting, but I like it. I have been in North Vancouver for the last month or so doing some training for work, and I spent an hour or so on the old Hwy 99 above Horseshoe Bay. Queen of Oak Bay by Nick B, on Flickr

The Queen of Oak Bay did something unusual while heading out of Departure Bay this morning - before leaving the bay, she spun around and is going "backwards" over to Horseshoe Bay, with the front of the cars facing the back of the boat. What would cause this?

No, it was the Alberni that snagged the fish net. Answered my own question.

No, it was the Alberni that snagged the fish net. Answered my own question. I also read that the Oak Bay snagged a net, along with the Alberni. Hopefully no more trouble with fishing boats today - there are a lot of them out there again.

The Oak Bay operated "backwards" out of Departure Bay all day yesterday, and is doing so again today. She actually did pretty okay on the schedule yesterday, but seems to be losing a bit of time today.

I wonder - does BC Ferries go after these fishing vessels for insurance costs? It seems at least in the Alberni case, there was some pretty clear negligent behaviour on the fishing vessels crew'a part.

Usually single enders operate the other way around on this route, but obviously they want to keep the vessel's orientation the same at each terminal. I wonder if they only do this so onboard foot passenger signage remains accurate. . .

The Oak Bay is still turning around in Departure Bay before going over "backwards" to Horseshoe Bay. She does seem to be keeping up with her schedule.

It looks like the Coquitlam is replacing the Oak Bay for the next 4 days, starting tomorrow, presumably to repair whatever's causing the Oak Bay to be operated single-ended.

The Oak Bay is operating single-ended again. As she left Departure Bay at 1 pm she turned around before heading over to Horseshoe Bay backwards.
