Well folks the following is not a photo... It is, however, a scan of a pennant (remember them, they were a popular item way back when). This pennant dates from the early 1960's, when the City of Victoria was a brand new vessel. DOT Collection

The two pictures shown below are of the Victoria @ Tsawwassen, in the late 1980's, I'm guessing. The are DOT photos. The lower picture is a close up from the same photo.

Beautiful Photo, Jim. Personally, I'm finding the historical pics of the V-Class showing up in this thread is great because pretty soon we won't see any of them ever again. 2 bonus' with this picture, the fact that it was taken during the Expo colour scheme, and that it's a nice closeup of the 'Victoria arriving at Tsawwassen.
Looking even closer - at the horns. Another small distinguishing feature to the 'Victoria, compared to her nearly identical twin. the 'Vancouver, is that the bass note in the 3 chime chord sat in between the two higher noted chimes. I believe the book, "Dogwood Fleet" shows a picture of the Victorias horns back in the 60s, and it clearly shows this different configuration. Though there's no mention of it, I just thought it was a good Ferrygeek observation.
Oh to have a recording of those horns sounding away in Active Pass on a summers afternoon.

Jim, every time you keep posting pics of the Vic, I am thinking "Why did they not take care of her like the other V's" Thanks for the pics.

I know what you mean Dan, those 3-tone AirChimes were silenced WAY too early...

Jim, every time you keep posting pics of the Vic, I am thinking "Why did they not take care of her like the other V's" Thanks for the pics. it is not that they did not take care of her like they would have liked too. it is the other issues she had, the freighter accident, the fire on the cardeck that weakened the steal decking. the queen of victoria had many issues with her.

www.ferrypicsbygraham.fotopic.net/p49070077.htmlUnstretched and unlifted now 'V' Class vessels pass at Active Pass near Village Bay, Mayne Island. Looking at this photo, it seems the navigational route entering & exiting Active Pass from the south has changed quite significantly since the 60s. Ferries approaching Active Pass en route to Tsawwassen, will change course to the port side well in advance of the Pass. In fact, I believe there is a marker in the middle of the channel which the ships pass to the outside (those with more marine navigation knowledge than I can correct me if I'm mistaken). The current sailing course makes quite a bit more sense than the one used in the 60s from a safety point. Does anyone know when this change took place?

I'm thinking the Vs has less of a draft before they were cut up, they might have been able to take a course over more shallow water.

When the route 9 vessel is going in and out of Village Bay they will cut in closer to the shore as seen in the above picture. There is a marked reef outside of Village Bay that the route one vessels will travel on the Prevost Island side of.

Some great old shots there.
I wonder if this is before the August '79 grounding of the 'Alberni? I suppose so, as she'd have been in repairs for a while after the accident.
That wood panneling in the cafeteria is pretty nostalgic too.
Thanks for sharing. =================
late edit: duh....you did post the date: June 1979, so this is the pre-grounding 'Alberni.

I think the date is more likely may 1979. the parade float would have been from the victoria day parade.

Sweet, thanks! Unless it was from the Canada day parade? Either way, it's was from '79. That float was amazing. You'd think with technology today, we could have splendid floats like that again..but apparently not. The BCFS float was cool, but it didn't last long. I wonder if they'd make another one.

I'm really concerned as to what she looks like now days! She doesn't seem to be anywhere on the internet. The only thing I could figure out is that her home port is the Haina River in the Dominican Republic and is still being used as a cargo ship according to that site someone posted a while back with the crew getting sick with "water infected with the diesel engine" haha that translation cracks me up but really it means water infected with diesel fuel, so it's hard to say if she's still being used as a cargo ship and whether or not they fixed that problem. Hopefully that doesn't result to a sinking. It would be awesome to try and track her down by going to the Haina River and seeing what she looks like now after spending 4 years down there so far, I wouldn't be able to go there because I'm too young of course but someday I might...hopefully.

I wonder where she runs to. Maybe she gets cargo back and forth between Dominican Republic and the Mainland (Belize, Mexico, Honduras??)

Where did you hear she sank on the way down there? That's hard to believe after reading that story that guy made of the voyage down there when the seas were rough and they had to block the bow doors. Then there's that other story with the guys that drank "water infected from the diesel engine" but I don't know how old that one is.
