Probably destroyed shortly after the parade I would guess.

Wow! Was that done by the City of Surrey or BC Ferries?

A few years ago, there was a human interest story about a guy who ran this huge ferry model behind his house somewhere. Dave Gary (sp?) was the reporter and, I believe, it was CKVU.
The model looked to be about the size of the one in WetCoastKid's photo and it was powered by a small outboard motor. It was hollow inside the model, so he just stood at the rear and steered the outboard with his feet! If I recall, the owner said he picked this model up at a bar, or won it at a bar, or something like that.
I'll have to dig out the tape with that story on it. It's been a while since I've seen it.

My dad metioned that to me. A guy from BT went there, he stood at the bow of a 8 foot-long C, and played "Anchors Away" or something like that. I heard he won an award. I'm unsure, though.

Just when you thought that this thread was gone, kind of like the ship that inspired it... In 1974 the citizens of Surrey were pleased, to say the least, to have a ferry named for them. And not just any ferry, but an imported beauty, quite unlike anything yet seen in the BC Ferry fleet. They held a parade and this model was one of the floats. DOT collectionI asked my brother what happened to this model. He says that it was used at a Surrey pub as part of a permanent display. The pub has a marine theme and is located on 96th Ave. I checked my maps and found a pub named the Wheelhouse at 12867 96th Ave. in Surrey. That would likely be the place, but there may be some other marine-themed pub in the area. Or the display may have since been removed. Anyways, one of you Lower Mainland based members of this forum are encouraged to follow this up. If the model is still on display it would be nice to know. A shrine of sorts for our fallen flagship.

Ah yes, back when she was the true Flagship of the fleet. I liked the footage that Global has, with Princess Diana and Prince Charles standing on the outer deck.

That picture was taken from a helicopter, as it was entering Vancouver Harbour, just before/after going under the Lions Gate. I believe she was going to Canada Place to drop the Royal Couple off.

Ah, 1986! What a great year for transportation fans here in Vancouver. Ships, buses, trains.....I'd do it all over again if I could! You can see the glassed-in "royal box" installed above the bridge just for the Royal Couple. Princess Diana is standing right beside it in the inset photo. (May/June 1986 issue of the Dolphin magazine.) The next day (May 2nd), the Royal Couple declared Expo 86 officially open.

Where was the Queen of the North taking the Princess and Prince from??? 2 hours or so earlier in the day, the Prince & Princess were touring Nanaimo at Swy-a-lana lagoon.....and were "entertained" by the Nanaimo High School concernt band, which included a 1st Trumpet player now known as "HMCS Nanaimo". We likely just played God save the Queen and O Canada.

The Royal Couple was busy aknowledging transportation infrastructure and representing the Commonwealth during that visit. I'm reminded of a recent edition of Translink(our regional public transit provider)'s " The Buzzer" publication (found aboard busses and SkyTrain). This 'Special Edition' (one of the few times that it's published in colour) celebrates the 20th anniversary of the opening of the first segment of Vancouver's rapid transit network. Featured on the front page is a picture of the Royal Couple in front of the new SkyTrain car 014, ' The Spirit of Canada.' (Notice the Royal Flag (House of Windsor?) attached to the train) Side Note: The new Richmond-Airport-Vancouver (RAV Line) ALRT(Automated Light Rapid Transit) is Vancouver's first departure from (now)Bombardier's SkyTrain technology that utilizes powered magnets. The new line is set to be completed by 2009.

Just to add to Graham's post:
The "Royal Train" made many appearances during 1986. The special 4-car train carried no passengers and the Royal Entourage always rode in car 014. After each visit, a small bronze plaque was hung inside the car to mark the event. Not sure if 014 still has these plaques today. Hopefully they're someplace safe and were not turned in to a scrap dealer for some quick cash!!

Hopefully somebody didn't take them off the wall and handed them in to scrap dealers. That would be awful. Hopefully they're still there

I remember seeing, in the last year or so, plaques similar to the ones that you're talking about on a Mark I car; now that I think about it, the number '014' rings a bell. I'd guess that the 2-car Mark I trainset is still in service as there is a shortage of capacity, resulting in ' cattle-car' conditions at peak hours. Hopefully somebody didn't take them off the wall and handed them in to scrap dealers. That would be awful. Hopefully they're still there Just a thought...The power of suggestion can go a long way, sometimes in the wrong direction. I only mention this because there are reports of similar plaques, but actually for people, that have been stolen for scrap.

Interestingly enough, Car #014 is no longer called the "Spirit of Canada", i think it's now called the "Spirit of Cranbrook"...wonder if it's the same vehicle

Installment for Sept... © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on FlickrAfter the first C class vessels entered service in 1976 the Q of Surrey (the North) was laid up, awaiting a decision on her future. For much of that time she was tied up at a spare berth at Swartz Bay, as seen here in April 1977, with the Queen of Saanich.
