That photo looks really touched up. Edited over the Expo lettering? It is, for sure. For starters, the photo appears to be in Georgia Strait, just off of Howe Sound. Look at the islands & mountains in the background. Next, count the lifeboats. Remember that the Q of Surrey I lost all but one boat per side, when she was transformed into the QotN, in 1980. The Expo paint job did not happen until 5 years after she lost those boats. No doubt the photo was taken in the 1974 to 76 period when she was dressed in dogwood blue, and serving on route 2. You're right.. it's taken from Whytecliff Park. The background is exactly the same as the photo's I've taken from there. Good eye!

I have been going through my brother's negatives searching for the original of the Tsawwassen in the snow. So far -- no luck. I did, however, come across some negatives of the Queen of the North at a Vancouver 'Open Hose' from the late 1980's at what I think is Ballantine Pier. Here they are... both DOT photos ©A variation of the first photo will serve as my 'sig pic' for the next little while.

D*amn, she looks good in Expo colours. I am so thankful that I had the chance to take a trip on her before her untimely demise. Thanks for the treat, WCK.

I was there! I have family photos of an event that looks more or less the same.

Back to the Queen of the North... Judging by the paint job this photo is from the summer of 1980. This ship had been newly re-minted as the Queen of the North, and they did not paint the dogwood scheme properly at the bow. By 1982 they had gotten it right. Question: any guesses on where this photo was taken? From a BCFC 1984 Inside Passage promotional brochure. DOT collection

I'd say that was taken at the old government wharf at Bella Bella.

This would be the Gov't wharf at Bella Bella; ie. downtown BBBC. The side-door loading pax & cargo is the main clue, for me. That door, on Deck-5 near the pursar's office is the give-away, and the crew referred to that as the "Bella Bella door". [late edit to note that Rroobb MMiirrlleess came up with the same answer. What were his clues?] Back to the Queen of the North... Judging by the paint job this photo is from the summer of 1980. The above photo of the QotN has no caption, and as such no mention of the location. When I first looked at the photo I was asking myself where it could have been taken. And then I noticed the Bella Bella door. That door was never used anywhere else, to my knowledge.
Next time I put on a guessing game for an old photo I will have to ask the old timers (Neil, Fluge, etc.) to let the younger crowd try and figure it out first. Old timers need to wait 24 hours before jumping in.
Hopefully, somewhere in an archives at the Queen of Fort Street they have the original negative of this photo. It is a beautiful shot.

It wasn't only the old timers you had to worry about with this picture WCK... I also knew that the picture was taken in Bella Bella, but not because I knew the intimate function of the "Bella Bella door"... I saw that picture in a book a long time ago, and I'm pretty sure it was captioned as being a view of Bella Bella.

Here is a link to a former members' photo page, with > 100 Queen of the North pictures. Since the 'North has been gone for almost 3 years now, I think she qualifies as "historical". These pics were taken on Oct.1, 2005, during an end-of-season repositioning cruise from Port Hardy to Tsawwassen (where she docked stern-in in berth 1). Karl & I were also on that same trip. Here are "Sandi"'s pics: travel.webshots.com/album/468217306gufTnnHer album gives a great record of the various nooks & crannies of this much-loved ship. Here are some selected items that caught my eye for various quirky reasons. (click on each thumbnail to go to larger-size version, and then click on the magnifying-glass icon below the pic to see it even larger.....): ============================= Here's a pick of the interesting stairway layout, between the car deck and upper decks (also down to the 'tween). Here's a shot of the ship layout diagram: Passenger cabins, at stern-end of Deck 6 (or 7?) Deck-7, mid-ships. Baggage-rack is a nice simple feature for those long trips.... Non-Coastalized cafeteria decor (Was this called the "Lighthouse Cafe?) MV Columbia, traveling north on a Saturday morning (just east of Malcolm / Cormorant islands) Deck-4 would be the platform deck. Deck-3 main car deck: notice the McGregor-door on the left-side of the shot (that simple device that bought the sinking-ship valuable time when the car-deck was filling with water on her last night.....) Karl on the Kar deck I like the signs on these doors ;D Somewhere in cabin-alley on Deck-6 or 7. Interesting stairwell. Lots of signs on that door.... Another stairwell shot (I've gotta keep Mac happy with the fine detail.... ;D) Do you think they were clever to have green-doors (what's behind that?) on the starboard side, and red on port? Another shot of cabin-alley: Part of the Prince of Wales lounge, on Deck 6: The door to the $15 North Star Lounge, on starboard side of Deck 6. This is just a reserved seat lounge (no coffee, pastries, newspapers.....).

[URL=http://travel.webshots.com/photo/ For a footie traveling with a big bag with two to three weeks of clothing those stairs were pretty daunting. This is the lower level of Passenger Cabins and were all exclusively inside cabins. Deck 7 Cabins on the other hand were both Outside and Inside Cabins. That is the final version of the cafeteria with that curving wall. I would consider it Coastal Lite . As far as I remember it was always just refered to as Aft Cafeteria. That is deck 7.

I thought I would post two pictures as a tribute to the Queen of the North, today on the anniversary of the sinking. Scans of photos, so quality is lacking. But the pics speak for themselves.

I found this in a book my grandmother had. Now neither her or my grandfather were ever on the Queen of the North, and never took the inside passage cruise. So, I don't know where it came from or who wrote it because it looks like neither of their writing. I scanned it but one line got screwed up so i'll re-type it manually. Staterooms: 90rooms; 210 berths Thought it was kinda cool. Cheers,

That is similar to the page they gave me on one trip. Except on the back was a very rough layout of the ship. My sheet the typed section is identical but missing the M.V. note in the last line. The pic at the top on mine had beside it a very hard to read map of the route. The map and photo looked like they were photocopies of photocopies, I think they typed them onboard and then photocopied. 8 1/2 x 14. Information is all the same as in the printed version I am waiting permission to reproduce.

A nice pic, even shows her mouth retainer. It would be good to try and restore the colour. The photo would date from 1974 to 76 when she served on route 2.

Here's another Q-Surrey picture of the lounge, before renovations. -------------- And here's proof of a partial repainting job, from 1974 I presume:

I am resurrecting this thread to present you with a 'new' photo of the Queen of the North. In my travels around the plant where I work I encountered a print out of this photo so I enquired about it. Turns out that the gentleman I was talking to is the photographer. He is sailor and spends part of his summers sailing the Inside Passage. He was near Bella Bella on the 5th of July 2004 observing a pod of whales when The North just happened to pass by. The dorsal fins in the foreground belong to the whales. My last trip on the QotN had taken place just two days earlier. photo © Del Pereira

Alright, I know this album I'm about to post isn't JST's, but it is definitely worth posting for historical value. This is an album from one of our members, however I don't know if he still comes online anymore. But what hes posted is photos of the Queen of Surrey (I). There's two pages in the album, so make sure you flip the page to see the original interior of the Stena Danica, and the Retro Red carpets! s272.photobucket.com/albums/jj178/Jimpilch/Ferries/Queen%20of%20the%20North/
