BC Transit over past couple of month have been adding 30 ft Vicinity buses in different communities across the provincial. I am posting these photos to show the buses in fleet. This being a ferries forum... For those of us not overly familiar with buses, what is a Vicinity bus? Is it conventional diesel, hybrid, or what? Where is it manufactured, and how many are being brought into service in BC? I ask because I'm interested in transit as well.

These units are conventional diesel and are made by Grande West Transportation. I believe 54 are in service by the end of 2017, 9 30ft buses on order and 3 35 ft buses are on order.

For some reason Nanaimo's #1038 has its BC Transit decals removed from both sides of the bus But BC TRANSIT remains on the front. I rode on this unit on rt 20 today from downtown to Woodgrove. See below: www.flickr.com/photos/123779583@N06/25932660618/in/dateposted/Any Idea why BC transit would de-decal a bus that is still in service? Scroll down page to see picture of same unit in full livery.

I am happy to report that as of Feb 14, Nanaimo Transit's #1038 is back in full BC Transit Deco! I rode on it outbound from Downtown to Woodgrove.!
See here: www.flickr.com/photos/123779583@N06/25401388977/
Now it appears that 1026 is having issues too, though it is still in deco, with some missing.

D40lf busses to return to Nanaimo's streets again temporary to test new GPS systems. On my way to Departure Bay ferry terminal last Wednesday I took a second glance in the RDN transit lot where I saw one of the older D40lf's parked. This bus does not have the A/c unit on top and is still in Expo livery which tells me it must be a 8100's series unit. Later on I inquired about this to a off duty RDN transit driver and he told me BC transit is doing a trial run with GPS so you can locate when the next bus is. So....there BAaaack.... TEMPORARY! Related to RDN transit effective immediately advertising will return to RDN on its CNG see article below for newspaper update. www.nanaimobulletin.com/news/rdn-to-re-instate-advertising-on-buses/

D40LF is an odd choice to test smart bus technology because BC Transit has made statement that smart bus technology would not be installed on any buses brought before 2005:

All of our buses do have Cctv and yes it seems odd to me that they would use The older buses but as the driver told me it is a trial run.
So I thought about it, BC Transit may have a few buses with GPS tracking technology to move around different communities rather than having the Community pay for installation on its buses, and having to remove them if the trial is a bust.
BC transit would just move the same units to another area.
I am just relaying what I have heard from a RDN driver.
But, some electric power plug in outlets on the bus would be nice...for our phones.😀 I can easily spend several hours a day total in the bus. About 40 minutes to Nanaimo and up to 50is on route 40 Woodgrove to Downtown then return.

Is there a story behind this bus picture? I thought as this is the 'Photos and Discussions' page I could post something without adding a description? Good lighting and a clean D40LF made the shot hard to resist.

Good lighting and a clean D40LF made the shot hard to resist. So... it's sunny, and it's a bus? "A clean D40LF" doesn't necessarily mean anything to a lot of people, though I'm open to learning why that matters. I'm interested in transit, but I'm not up on the various systems or the interesting quirks in vehicle assignments. What city is this? Why is this bus a story? If I post a ferry photo, I explain why it's worth adding to the existing body of photos or information on that vessel. I'd like to have the same insight into a transit vehicle.

In January 2, 2018 James Bay under went major route changes with only three routes going thru or terminating the James Bay which are 2, 3 and 10. I am posting this photo because 2 is only route in James Bay to use 40 ft buses for the major of trips. 9414 by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr

This is great. This would be a reason I might choose to go to Saltspring for the day and take 3 different ferry routes. Anyone know if these are full sized buses? I'm thinking they will be very full when the ferry comes in. Now you can take public transit from Vancouver all the way to Duncan and Chemainus. Too bad you still can't connect up to Nanaimo... probably a matter of time. Just Shuttle Buses On Salt Spring
