Would the point be, there maybe more crew then there is vehicles on Route 5a to Saturna from Swartz Bay at times? Two Salish Class Vessels serving a combined population of 6100 Residents. That's interesting.
If you take the Statistics for January 2023 traffic is up 7.8% from a year earlier to 1191 Vehicles / 31 / 4 = 9.6 Vehicles / Sailing on Average to Saturna.
Now we understand the recent cancellations when understaffed. It makes economic sense. A form of Ferry Triage.
The Ferry Advisory Committee of the SGI is Meeting with The Corp at 0900 on Friday in Sidney. That could be an interesting Meeting.

The Salish Raven is currently holding in dock at Swartz Bay as BC Ferries has been unsuccessful in securing the required number of crew to sail the vessel. The 5:05 am sailing from Swartz Bay to Sturdies Bay will be delayed approximately 45 minutes.
We are working to replace the missing crew member as quickly as possible so we can resume service. We require a specific number of crew members on board the vessel to ensure the safety of our passengers in the unlikely event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations.
We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of this delay. We will update you once service has resumed.

Meanwhile the MV Quinitsa is moored idle at the Lay By in Baynes Channel (Fanny Bay) as a spare. Taunting the Ferry Patrons of Denman & Hornby Island whom require more service. Appreciate the current fix is only temporary and perhaps for good reason. However, wouldn't the MV Quinitsa as the chosen spare, fix the crewing and cost of operating the Salish Class on Route 5a?

Not sure when this movement happened, but Salish Heron is currently operating on route 17. Salish Raven has taken over route 5, while Salish Eagle is on its original route 9 assignment.

Will be super cool to see the Heron take her first stint on Route 1 this December on a variety of relief sailings covering for the Queen of New Westminster, who remains out of service. Sailings are blocked at 2hrs long with only 30 minute turns at both ends of the route. 2x daily on select days (11/30, 12/13,4,7,8,10,11). Curious to see how this ends up working out. Didn't even see this alert until today.

The refit for the Queen of New Westminster is being extended to ensure all necessary work is complete and the vessel is ready to return to service by December 12. As a result, the weekends of December 1 and 8 are expected to be busy on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route, particularly on Friday and Sunday afternoons and evenings due to the Queen of New Westminster not being available for supplemental service on these two weekends.
The Spirit of British Columbia and Spirit of Vancouver Island will continue to provide regularly scheduled service on the odd hours from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm.
In an effort to use all available assets, the Salish Heron will provide extra sailings on this route. Due to the vessel speed, the Salish Heron crossings will be two hours in duration. While the Salish Heron is a smaller vessel than the ships that usually provide service on this route (138 vehicle capacity compared to 358 on a Spirit class vessel), we are offering the added capacity for our customers to reduce wait times at the terminal. This is the first time a Salish class ferry has sailed on this run, as these vessels regularly service the Southern Gulf Islands and Comox-Powell River routes.
Extra sailings are as follows:
Added Sailings – November 30, December 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 11
Departing Tsawwassen
10:00 AM
3:00 PM Departing Swartz Bay

Thank you. This is really confusing, the travel advisory says Queen of New Westminster is returning on the 12th but the reservations page shows the 15th?

Click "View" in the yellow Service Advisories board at the top of the website. I check this frequently, it was issued this morning so I'm surprised nobody posted about it yet! I never noticed that big yellow banner! I am signed up for the service notice emails for every route but I guess they don’t email the service advisories. Jeez... a 'niche' sub-category for service notices. Who knew? I'm thinking this is the first time in fifty years that a vessel this size did route one, and the last time, it would have been the Queen of Tsawwwassen or the Queen of Sidney, both capable of keeping the schedule. The Salish class can't. A few years ago, this would have piqued my interest for a fan trip, but I just don't find the Salish vessels interesting enough.

Sometimes they only show up on the schedule page too, but of course, this definitely justifies a mainstream website alert. The posted time for the schedule is 2 hours onboard the SH so the times have been modified to reflect that (10a, 1230p, 3p, 530p).

When that Liberal Party guy with the spiky hair was in charge of ferries, all we would have heard about was the need to keep costs in line. Now, you have to give BC Ferries credit for using the assets they have, insufficient though they might be. EDIT: 'Spiky hair' guy's name- Todd Stone. Marvel Comics couldn't have come up with a better one.

I just find it interesting that a Salish boat is going to be on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route, its the first time this has happend with these boats but I believe its happend in the past too with other boats long ago.

Tsawwassen filled in, possibly the first time on r1 since 1962 since she went to route 2 that year.

The Victoria was assigned as third sb ship that summer but was redeployed to cover a broken c class for a couple of weeks. Tsawwassen filled in, possibly the first time on r1 since 1962 since she went to route 2 that year. Interesting I also know that from time to to time the Tsawwassen would cover for the Queen of Nanaimo on Route 9 when needed.
