The hits keep coming for AMHS, the one and only Cross Gulf crossing is cancelled . . . yesterday. Engine on one of Kennicott's lifeboats is fubared, and it'll be a month getting a new one from Europe. So no open ocean sailing for her. They cancelled anyone leaving Bellingham that was going past Haines with less than two hours until sailing time. AMHS continues to disappoint the state in a big way. Sad state. I don't believe that there.... was a cross gulf sailing this week or anything? The Kennicott has just been doing the standard 3.5 day up/back from Bellingham, not the cross gulf service right now. When was this? I knew they were going to be cancelled this summer, is that what you were referring to? According to this article, the cancelled sailing is next week (April 3rd).

State ferry system in third year of crew shortageswww.juneauempire.com/news/state-ferry-system-in-third-year-of-crew-shortages/It looks like the Kennicott will be out of service for the Summer schedule. Also: The LeConte will be in the yard longer than scheduled due to "rotten steel". Day room addition to the Tazlina is scheduled to go out to bid in March. The Columbia will get upgrades to the controllable-pitch propellers system in 2025. The Kennicott will get upgraded generators in 2025.

The night before "sailings may be cancelled/route may be out of service" alerts seem to be more common now (particularly on the San Juan Inter island and Tahlequah/Point Defiance route which are now several times a week).

Perhaps the mayor was referring to a service restoration plan from earlier this year which stated that WSF had looked at a couple of options to restore service earlier than 2030, with one of the options being the following:
Leasing a vessel from another company: This would be challenging for two reasons. First, vehicle traffic is a major driver of both ridership and revenue for this route – passengers need a car when they get to Sidney, as most are accessing other areas of Vancouver Island, not staying in Sidney. It would be challenging to find a vehicle ferry fitting the Anacortes, Friday Harbor, and Sidney terminals. Second, adding another vessel to the route would require the crewing to operate it and would take crewmembers out of the system to train on the leased vessel. This would threaten the reliability of domestic service. Additionally, any vessel operating between two U.S. ports, such as between Anacortes and Friday Harbor, is subject to the Jones Act and must be built in the U.S.

This is new news. At one time (early-mid 2000s) WSF was proposing buying a foreign vessel but it never went anywhere. The issues I see with this new proposal is: - Crewing (there are still trip cancellations/service reductions due to crew shortages and service increases keep getting postponed)
- The vessel would have to be able to fit WSF slips (unless WSF is allowed to make modifications to make the vessel compatible with WSF slips)
- The vessel would have to be SOLAS compliant as is.

The Sealth is scheduled to go into drydock (Vigor) next week. I'm guessing WSF wanted to move the Sealth south so it would be closer to the shipyard (possibly due to crewing availability as it seems like WSF can only move one vessel at a time right now).
