All of the below routes have some sort of connection....trust me. Actually, I had to ponder a couple of those -- but that was fun to think about for a minute or two. But..... I'm missing the connection on last one..... Think of great defensive-tackles for the Seattle Seahawks.....

Kennedy Lake is definitely on the way to Tofino. I know the Capilano reservoir is responsible for a very large percentage of Vancouvers water. The Seymour and Coquitlam Reservoirs are also very important. Kennedy Lake is not only on Vancouver Island, but it just happens to be the largest body of fresh water on that island. Big enough to float a Spirit.

Kennedy Lake (the one by Tofino/Ucluelet (sp?)) is big enough in area to hold a spirit, but it isn't very deep at all. There would not be many places a ship of any major size would be able to go. There's also many dead stumps/logs/trees just below the surface, which makes it very hazardous.
There is a reason you don't see many boats on it.

I am thinking that a lot of you have missed the point of Mr. Horn's quite elegant tongue-in-cheek post -- it was not so much about the routes that he proposed, but rather funny word pairings to see if we could bend our brains around the brain-teasers that he put out there. Although I find the finite details about the aforementioned geography interesting, the point was NOT to critique their suitability for maritime operations, but rather a "Jeopardy-esque" connect-the-words puzzle. BTW: Kudos to Mr. Horn for his valiant effort. It must have taken a while to get them all thought out and atlas-checked. You, Mr. Horn, quite obviously have far far FAR too much spare time on your hands!

Fluge, did it ever occur to you that Kennedy Lake is Grouse Mountain's water supply for the Snow-making machines up there? Is there a Kennedy-Lake in North-Van, or do you mean the one by Tofino? ....or am I missing a joke ? There really is a Kennedy Lake in North Van. I guess your Kennedy Lake Idea of we had some serious Global Warming.

As long as this IS the dream routes thread, my company has stranded me in Portland, Oregon for the last 3 years, and it's looking like 2 more for now. So I vote for a Portland to Tsawwassen ferry.

You, Mr. Horn, quite obviously have far far FAR too much spare time on your hands! My brain is very tangent-orientated, so I used John H's " Ferry Terminal" website listing of BC Routes, and worked through some silly connections that came to mind. I used my friend Google to check things, like to ensure that Montserrat was indeed a volcano (just like Jimmy Buffet used to sing about), and to be sure that Jane Powell was in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I was also thinking of a Powell / Monroe route, to honour the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. -------------------------------- Here are some WSF similar type routes: (I've taken some liberties with spelling: Sidney to Evgeny Lopez to Affleck Friday Harbor to Sunday Summit Shaw to Rogers Anacortes to Anna Nicole Keystone to Cornerstone Port Townsend to Port Daltry (or to the moon....) Clinton to WhiteWater Kingston to Port-au-Prince Edmonds to Fitzgerald Bainbridge Island to Jervis Inlet Vashon to Worsley Pt. Defiance to (I'll leave it up to you to make a submission)

My dream would be a route from Kitimat directly south to the north end of Vancouver Island. Seems reasonable to alternate schedules between PR and Kitimat, no?

Route 30 could have been much shorter by going through Porlier Pass, just north of Galiano, then making there way to a new terminal constructed north-east of Ladysmith. With such a route a four hour turn around as on routes 1 & 2 should be possible. I have no idea about suitable points to build a terminal or available land for a terminal and new highways, but I do believe such a route to be feasible and attractive. What I don't know about is navigational issues on such a route. I like the idea too, Jim. Minor problem....The terminal you have drawn a Ferry route to land right on top of the Yellow Point Lodge. But I understand what you mean though. The only problem is access to Yellow Point, which is probably why BCF turned this option down 15 or so years ago. Yellow Point Road is a fairly windy road, with rolling hills, and I couldn't imagine trains of semi trucks trying to do this road. So a new highway would obviously be needed, much like with the Duke Point situation. This area is considered to be part of the Booney area of Ladysmith/Nanaimo, and the people that live out there have decided to live there for the same reason that everyone else has for living in the boonies. Which is to get away from the City Life. I can't blame them, it's beautiful out there. The residents out there would never allow it. They can be outweighed and outvoted by all of southern Vancouver Island though.

Nanaimo to the Columbia Bar?
Duncan to Hines?
Port McNeill to Port Lehrer?

Nut some questions: - What is your belief re individual property rights? - What is your belief re the state's right to trump individual property rights? - What are your basic political beliefs re big gov't vs small gov't? (ie. public everything, private everything, or something in between?) - What's your utopia for society in BC? - What's your agenda re public transportation discussions? - How deeply-held or immovable are these core beliefs of yours? The answers to these will help me in deciding how I should participate in forum discussions with you. In short, I need to decide whether you have any movement possibility in your core beliefs re transportation and property-rights, as this will impact the ability for me to have a productive discussion with you. Or do you just enjoy debating things for debate's sake, and not really care too much about the actual issue? Some background, please. Thanks.

So in your honour I'd propose a route from Courtenay to Trafalgar. (this would be a good Jeopardy! category, to guess the connecting in-common item).

To keep it brief, I'd say I'm a moderate on right-left, property and individual rights issues. I also believe in the free market with some restrictions to protect the common good and the environment, and a supporter of good public transit. And above all, a believer in DEMOCRACY. As for how movable I am, I guess I just need to be presented with a good compelling argument to be swayed.

Punta Arenas, Chile to Nome, Alaska That route could have the option of taking a shorter Pacific-side route, with a return-trip by going from Nome to Iqaluit, and then down the Atlantic side to get back to Punta Arenas....then a Beagle Channel trip at the bottom.

Would a Seattle-Victoria route ever work again, either summer or year round. I trust you mean a car ferry, since they already have the Victoria Clipper passenger ferries? That route apparently was not making money which is why it ceased operations. I would think that if it was at all profitable, a car ferry would still be in service on that route.

They can be outweighed and outvoted by all of southern Vancouver Island though. I suspect that I'm not the only one who is wondering about some of the core belief that is emanating from member "Ruddernut". Let me be direct, and ask Mr. R. Nut some questions: - What is your belief re individual property rights? Except in the extreme incidents where the well-being of the populace is threatened, individual rights should be put first.- What is your belief re the state's right to trump individual property rights? Alright, now that I've stuck my neck out about individual property rights, I would say the state has the right to override the individual in the following circumstances: - If the common good is threatened, - If the benefit to the populace is greater than the loss to the individual, given the following stipulations...all avenues of compromise have been exhausted, it is approved by a majority of the populace (fundamentally I would like to see this as a majority of the population, not just the voting population, but one takes what one can get), and the individual is adequately compensated for the incurred loss. - It is not done just to capitalize on a situation and profit monetarily from it.- What are your basic political beliefs re big gov't vs small gov't? (ie. public everything, private everything, or something in between?) An efficient government of oversight with minimal direct regulation...given a set of laws strong enough to penalize those who choose not to play fair but with policies liberal enough to allow businesses and individuals to pursue their goals with out having to worry about someone telling them No at every turn. So, as small as feasibly possible to facilitate the governance of the nation as I have specified above, and including the items following:
Now for my exceptions to the rule...Strong social network - I grew up in Canada; I now live in the US - I see the differences. The welfare state and the redistribution of wealth to the needy is necessary...but I leave it to the masses to determine how much and who because, as has been pointed out before, if we are too aggressive in taxing the top to support the bottom, we take the chance of damaging the system.
I also believe schools are best funded and run by a government agency to ensure (hopefully) equal distribution of the right-to-education. I support the idea of local oversight committees populated by residents to ensure funds are distributed both by the general mandate established for such a system and as the community desires for discretionary funding.
Ditto for public works and utilities, though the day to day operations, and completion of projects are often more efficient when the actual work is completed by the private sector.
Health-care should be government regulated, and for this I believe strong regulation is required, though I'm on the fence about private/public provision of health insurance...there are advantages to both...I just want the best coverage and service possible at the lowest reasonable price. - What's your utopia for society in BC? Isn't it already? ;D- What's your agenda re public transportation discussions? For me this falls under the public works issue, though in some ways it is more discretionary spending and has many more significant social, economical and environmental implications. Like health-care, I'm on the fence on who is best to supply the actual service on this issue, too. Both public and private providers have their pros and cons. - How deeply-held or immovable are these core beliefs of yours? On the social net, schooling, and health-care, I'm pretty staunch on my beliefs constituting what we as a people should provide to ourselves. How we provide such services to each other is welcome for debate. For public works/transportation and utility discussions I would welcome all debate and ideas...I have my beliefs about where we as a world should be going with resource utilization and energy consumption, but how, why and when to fulfill said beliefs will always be up for public debate. lol...hopefully I don't sound too contradictory... Let's debate that question... Some background, please. Thanks. Flug, I answered above in red. Can I participate in discussions with you on the forum? ;D Yes, I made a point of answering Flugelhorn's question to ruddernut. Please take note of how I answered the question comprehensively so that other members knew what I meant, and intended to further the conversation in a constructive manner. I also backed up as much of the reasoning behind my beliefs as I could to the same end. Wow, imagine that...trust me, I welcome debate on issues, and if you hit me with well-thought-out arguments, I will evaluate them, point out the flaws I see as well as commend you on the valid points. Then I will adjust my thinking to reflect what I have learned from what was presented; I would believe that most of the members of this forum are of a similar bent. Now, since the other threads I would have responded in have been locked, I have chosen to respond here. But I have hijacked this thread for long enough so I will put myself back on track! ;D
I am really hoping to see a return of ferries to the Chesapeake Bay. There are a number of communities along the bay pursuing new routes and reinstitution of historic routes to cut travel time as opposed to the circuitous route now required to use the available bridges. A news story on what is being proposed: www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2005/012005/01292005/1650437/index_html
