SOVI is going in for refit now, instead of the SOBC. SOBC will refit after the SOVI. This information was found in today's Times-Colonist. The fire on the SOVI did damage to the electrial system as well as the generator. No other news to report, as the work at the local shipyard has quite slowed down and the majority of the men are now laid off. Hey, good to hear from you again. Sorry to hear of the Victoria area shipyard slowdown, and the likely effect on your family. Hopefully some other jobs for the yards will come along soon. Regarding the SOVI, that's been big news that we've been following here ever since the fire (on 2 or 3 different forum threads). Take a read through the last few day's posts; you might find them interesting with our comments and speculation on the ripple-effect of the SOVI fire.

According to RBI, the Queen of Coquitlam is scheduled to replace the Coastal Renaissance on Route 2 beginning this Sunday, I'm assuming for a refit period for the CR. Interesting that it's the Coquitlam and not the Cowichan acting as the replacement ferry. I guess the Cowichan will be going in for refit soon as well.
**EDIT**
The Queen of Cowichan has taken over for the Coastal Renaissance, starting with the 3pm sailing today (Wednesday). According to RBI, the Cowichan is slated to be full time on Route 2 until Tuesday, where the Coquitlam will take over full time duties.

My friend who is de-storing the CR says the vessel is scheduled to depart for Esquimalt tomorrow morning. Then next week the crew have to de-store the Cowichan for her refit...lots of work for sure. Apparently the Coquitlam's refit is taking about 1 week longer than planned and they wanted to get the CR into drydock ASAP, so that's why the Cowichan is being used for a few days.

Day 1 of the Quinsam refit, and it looked like bedlam for those trying to get home to Gabriola tonight at around 6:00pm. The Nanaimo harbour terminal was overflowing with vehicles, which were lining up down the road to just past the gate into the Seaspan terminal. I don't think I've ever seen traffic as bad as that there.

Not technically a refit, but it looks like the Alberni is being removed from service tomorrow and Thursday, Oct 21 and 22. RBI shows the New West on rt30, the SoBC back at Tsawwassen, and the CC #1 out of Swartz Bay for those 2 days only. Then those ships resume their current positions for Friday.

The New West is probably going to feel so happy to be back on her own route again. Maybe she will decide she wants to stay so badly that she'll throw a tantrum if they try to pull her off rte 30 again until they let her stay back on the route permanently. I bet she hasn't really been all that happy on route 1 anyway: having to worry about Active Pass all the time when she's been used to sailing the open straight for so long.

hmm, interesting! I am off tommorrow too! Maybe I will have to check out the New West on route 30!
According to RBI the SOBC isent getting a refit at all before the Olympics as she is listed on RBI right through. The SOVI is listed out of service right up until Christmas. Is this right???

I believe the SoBC is going into refit in January...however the refit relief-ship assignments for January onward haven't been loaded into RBI yet. And yes, it looks like the SoVI is in refit until at least mid-December. So when the CR is back in service she goes to Swartz Bay as #2, the CC becomes #1, and the SoBC goes back to Tsawwassen so the QoNW can relieve the Alberni. The Coquitlam will be #1 out of Departure Bay until the Cowichan returns from her yet-to-begin refit. I guess everything won't be back to normal until Christmas....I love refit season

Why would deck 5 be closed?? It wasent before when she was on the route. I just think the amenities such as the Coastal Cafe Express and Sea West Lounge wont be operating.

When the New West was on rt30 prior to her upgrade, the only time the deck 5 aft lounge was open was during peak periods. So I am thinking that not only will the Coast Cafe Express be closed, but the entire lounge will probably be closed. Also when she was on rt 30 before, the deck 5 saddle lounges and the deck 5 midship lounge did not exist, so I would be surprised it they were open to the public at all even with the Seawest Lounge itself closed. Of course I hope I'm mistaken.

Is the Capilano still on the Bowen route?
Also, is it true that BCF hasn't clearcutted the dogwoods inside of her?

It is more likely that she is pining to relive her childhood days on route 2, home ported at Horseshoe Bay. That, in reality, is her home. Shove over you evil 'C class'!

Does anyone have any news where the Tenaka is right now? Tenaka is showing up on Siitech this morning. She is still at the drydock near Queensborough.

When is BCF planning on replacing those smaller northern vessels, anyway? The Tenaka was bult in '64 and the NIP in '58, so they're getting on in years. I'm thinking they'll wait 'till nimpy, tachek and QQ2 get a bit older, then replace them all at once... am I right?

I'll let you try and find it. Here are some places to start looking for the list: - BCFS website, under the "about BC Ferries" section. Look for their long term business plan reports. - BC Ferry Commissioner website might have the replacement schedule mentioned in a report (check the various links on that site). ....or instead, you could just look at the new-vessels page of this here forum and peruse the 6th-thread-from-the-top. ;D I suggest that you do any discussion of new-ships on that other thread....thanks!

There is also the other factor in the equation that since BCFerries is a little short of money these days to build new vessels, we will likely see some of the retirement dates for the minor vessels pushed back significantly.
