Anyone know why the SOVI is out of service??? The Celebration and New West are running route 1 and the SOBC is out of service so I thought they always have at least 1 Spirit running on route 1! And BC Ferries need to smarten up and get their info right cause the service notice says the SOVI is suppose to be running the number 1 ship out of Swartz Bay and the Celebration is suppose to be the extra! Someone is mixed up somewhere!

Tenaka left the shipyard this morning about 9:00 am and was travelling up the Fraser, possibly on a trial run. There is a similar sized ferry at the shipyard that has been there a couple of weeks. I live across the river from the shipyard.

I live across the river from the shipyard. Thanks for the update. The smaller ferry currently at Queensborough is the Nimpkish. She's pretty similar to Tenaka, except that she's missing the passenger deck that's between the saddle-lounges and the bridge.

Not just an overheight difference. Tenaka is actually shorter than the two retired Albion ferries, and slightly shorter than the Tachek. She only has three vehicle lanes to Tachek's four; BC Ferries says she can carry 30 cars, but that's impossible- it's about 24, same as the Albion ferries, whereas Tachek can take 28-30. ....and here's an old Cortes news article about that same issue: - some good insight into why the Tachek is better for Cortes and why she's a more versatile vessel then the Tenaka. from here: www.cortesisland.com/cgi-bin/tideline/show_articles.cgi?ID=1643&TOPIC=0

Tenaka's recently completed refit mainly involved her important stuff: the mechanical workings. There were very few noticeable passenger upgrades (not that any are needed). There is of course new paint, and nice shiny-happy new signs. I was on Tenaka today, and it was funny to hear riders' reactions to the different ship; they must have been so used to the Tachek. Things like "I miss the high tables in the lounge". But the teens probably like the return of the Tenaka, with more places to hide.

just wondering if anyone knows what's going on with the SOBC? heard that there was a crank case explosion and that the Spirits return in day to day...anyone know if it will be ready for the Olympics?? If the NW sails for the duration of the Olympics, guess its' midnight sailings will be cancelled...

The Celebration is doing the midnight sailings not the New West!

i know the coastal is doing some midnight sailings, but did they change the schedule because as of the beginning of the month the nw was scheduled to sail at 12am, tie up in SWB for 4 hrs and then sail at 6am from the 15-17th and then the 22-24th...but apparently now they're sailing at 12am from TSA and then 2am from SWB because the sobc isn't sailing...the nw is going to tie up at 4am so that it can sail at 7am, as the #1 boat...as of today the crew is still scheduled to work the graveyard shift...

I don't think that's how it's gonna shake down. Currently they are showing that the Celebration will sail out of Swartz Bay at 6am and 6pm on most days, leaving Tsawwassen at 12pm and 12am. Therefore sailing one way, then tieing up for 4 hours before the next sailing. Surely it'll have to vacate the Berth at Tsawwassen during its layover to allow for normal operation of Routes 1 and 30, especially since Berth 4 is out of commission. There must really be some issues with the SoBC because it appears it will not be back in service in February.

A reliable source did in fact mention to me that there was a major issue that cropped up with the SOBC the other day. I won't go into detail just because I have conflicting reports of what happened. But I wouldn't expect the SOBC to be in service for a while.

I heard yesterday the Queen of Nanaimo is scheduled for refit Oct-Nov this year, with the Queen of Burnaby as the replacement vessel on Route 9. I suppose the Queen of Chilliwack will be the replacement then on Route 17, though I have heard no confirmation of that. Earlier in this forum members were saying that the Island Sky could not do that route because open deck ferries can not cross the Straight... That's not quite true, as the Bowen Queen does in the summer on Route 9A. The problem is more with the fact that nearly all the the open deck ferries have open liferafts, which TC does not allow on cross-straight sailings. The Bowen is an exception, with traditional covered rafts that likely will be replaced in next refit with a new covered raft-slide from LSA, similar to the ones on Q-Nan, QNW and a number of other large vessels. Could the Bowen fill in on Route 17? I wonder. I don't know what the traffic is like there. The one time I rode Route 17 there was only 10 or 12 cars on it, but that was a fairly late sailing out of Powell River.

The Bowen Queen would be useless on route 17 due to her tiny size compared to the Burnaby. Also, the Bowen Queen is only allowed to run across the straight in the summer months.
I think that the Burnaby will take over for Naniamo and the Chilliwack will take over for the Burnaby. The Chilliwack did OK last year when she took over for the Burnaby.
Cheers,

Yeah that's what I thought too... But I had heard the Chilliwack's draft is too deep for Little River at extreme low tides. (Probably due to the RAD's). That's why I wondered. But like I say. I'm quite unfamiliar with that route... It'll be fun to see the Burnaby down here again, though! She was the first ship I ever steered, when I was about 11 she was relieving or #2 at Swartz Bay on Route 1. That was back in the late 80's...

FYI... the SOBC left Deas Dock around the noon hour yesterday. I saw watched her heading to the strait under her own power, but under escort by two tugs. Anyone know where she is now?

I received a phone call tonight just after 7:00 pm from one of my brothers who said that he was aboard the SoBC waiting to depart Tsawwassen for Swartz Bay. I told him that he must be on the SoVI as the SoBC is out of service. He said NO, that he was indeed aboard the SoBC. I checked the BCFS's 'Current Conditions' page and sure enough she is back in service.
My question is: When did she return to service? Today, or over the weekend. She has missed almost all of the Olympic traffic where her foot passsenger capacity would have been very useful.

Has the C Renaissance seen any service since the first week of the Olympics? No, unfortunately. She still is sitting in berth two undergoing repairs...

Has the NorEx actually had what constitutes a 'refit', or has it just been in storage at Deas?
