The Queen of Burnaby has been held up in Comox for the last 2 days now due to high winds. If there was any time I'd wish they could Un-Retire the QPR, now would be it.
Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Comox (Little River) - Powell River (Westview)
Updated as of 3:50 pm:
Please be advised that as a result of ongoing weather delays, the Queen of Burnaby is cancelling the remaining scheduled sailings for this evening. Instead it will wait for a break in the weather and depart Comox as soon as possible, travelling in shuttle mode for the remainder of the evening.

Please be advised that traffic is currently very heavy at both terminals and it is suggested to use alternate routes if possible.

At the Burnaby's current position off Comox, it looks like she'll be able to sail into Little River and take over the 7:15 crossing from the Chilli.

The Cumberland Returns in two days following her Major Refit. The Bowen is to replace the Capilano next month.

VICTORIA – BC Ferries’ Queen of Cumberland returns to service on December 16, restoring regular vehicle capacity to the Swartz Bay – Southern Gulf Islands route, following an extensive two-month major refit. Over the past two months, the Queen of Cumberland underwent an extensive mechanical refit and drydocking; a passenger accommodation upgrade; installation of new car deck deluge piping; and upgrades to the sewage system. “We want to thank our Southern Gulf Islands customers for their patience during the refit period, which was conducted during the off-season to try to reduce any impact on our customers,” said Mike Corrigan, BC Ferries Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. The Bowen Queen, which replaced the Queen of Cumberland, will prepare to replace the Queen of Capilano for its refit in January 2011.
IF they have this capacity now, why did they never use it on the Saltery Bay run. I'm sure they must have had a fair amount complaining whenever the switch from a full-service Queen of Tsawwassen to a partial service Queen of Chilliwack took place. Maybe they still just considered the Saltery Bay run as only an intermediate run instead, not requiring full meals service. You'd probably get the same type of answer if you asked why they went from the Chilliwack's Cafeteria Service to the Island Sky's Snack Bar operation. I agree with John, it probably has to do with crew. Though you also have to factor in that Route 17 offers full cafeteria service with the Burnaby year-round whereas Route 7 only offered full service with the Queen of Tsawwassen in summer.

Looking at the pictures of these vessels, It almost looks like the Tween Car Deck doesn't go below the waterline. Or at the least not completely. Though on a route like the Discovery Coast Passage, they would have the time to use this Tween Deck. Is it any different from the Chilliwack's platforms? The Tween Deck would also make it able to handle heavy traffic on the Powell River-Comox route.
Reviewing some of the interior, the Hiiumaa could easily be a worthy replacement for the Chilliwack or the Burnaby if so be it. I can easily see a Gift Shop, Coastal Cafe, and a lounge that could have a Sitka Coffee Place Style operation.
Here's a few videos of the Hiiumaa's sistership, the Muhumaa.
In Rough Seas (has a bit of a Queen of Chilliwack style rocking motion to it)

Unless your noting that both vehicle ramps are being used, I cant tell whats different on the Chilliwacks car deck. That's what I meant. To my knowledge, they almost never get used.

Some shots of the Chilliwack from this afternoon. They're from my Cell Phone so bear with me, I didn't have my regular camera handy when I took these shots. It's a shame too, they were using the 2nd Platform Ramp. Car Deck... Notice something different? Passing the NIP Our position from both directions when we changed ends. Toward Grief Point---------------------------Toward Westview Finally some views from the 2nd Platform Ramp That's all.

I find it kind of odd I didn't notice it before, but this is the first time I noticed that she used to have lifeboats. Just thought I'd point that out, it does kind of distinguish her from the other minors. Though I guess I'd have to look at pictures of the others to confirm that.
