I remember one day arriving at Swartz Bay on the Queen of Saanich on a MD sailing from Tsawwassen. All foot passengers were instructed to disembark via the main car deck which I thought was strange, untill I watched us come into berth 3 Stern into the Berth though. It was the only time I remember using that berth on rt 1. Berth 2 must have been closed for some reason. This was soon after the Saanich was refurbished in the 1990's. It is very rare for rt 1 in service ships to use that dock. This of course was in the days before I had a camera.

Why don't they use the Quinitsa with the Bowen Queen on route 7 since the Quinitsa is just playing possum anyway and she could carry more trucks. Or is traffic so light at this time of the year they don't need the capacity? I have never been on that run so I don't know. Or they could have just sent the Skeena Queen up instead which is closer in capacity to the Island Sky than the Bowen. Yes, I know The route 7 crews are not trained on the Skeena. Would this be the deciding factor or is there some other reason why the Skeena Could not do that run. OH I almost forgot Skeena Queen has no coffee shop...That does it for me. LOL!
Its too bad that the Northern Adventure could not be modified in a way that the rear ramp could be removed so that the ship Could possible have been used. Its a shame that vessel is just sitting idle at DEAS dock all winter. It could have been used on the Comox run.

Yes that's a dig at the evolution of Facebook, not users here. Incidentally the SoVI got back to Swartz Bay from wherever she'd been hiding. Hands down the freshest (and most complete) paint I've seen on a BC Ferry. She looks younger than the Orca if one measures by shine!
The Spirit was hiding in the Esquimalt dry dock with the Skeena Queen.😉
Update as of 2:20 pm Salish Orca at Dease Dock according to Vessel Finder.

Right on!!!!
I wonder if (When) the Orca class vessel docks into a berth with a upper ramp how the car deck door interacts with it. Is there enough space between the ship's door to clear the upper vehicle deck ramp?
It's inevitable that the ship's will use say berth 3 at Tsawwassen at some point.

Keep your eyes open in the future for Mighty ships on Discovery Channel. The Celebrity Solstice was featured on last night's program. They were in Australia though.

Awesome Picture Wettcoast!!
Brings back memories for me too.
Most pictures posted of the Queen of The North/Surrey shows her docked bow into the dock at Swartz Bay, But I have personally spotted her stern to dock at Swartz Bay. This was probably the last time I have sailed on the Spirit of BC.(mid to late 1990's) Yes this tells you just how often I sail on rt 1. Although as the Queen of the North she had no choice but to dock stern in.
I remember that on this day, QTN was at Tsawwassen when I departed on the Spirit of BC, and I went into downtown Victoria and when I arrived back at Swartz Bay, I was surprised to see the Stena ship at Swartz Bay.
To Clarify: I have sailed on route 1 a few times since, several times in the 2000's but not on the Spirit of BC.

FYI. I just want people to know the Burnaby did route 2 as recently as the early to mid 1990's As I rode on her on a extra sailing. This was my one and only sailing on this ship that I am aware of. This was just before she was put on the Seattle run.
Also I rode on the Q Nanaimo on rt 2 HB-DB run sometime in the 1990's again on extra sailing. I also sailed on the Nanaimo on rt 9 several times.
In Aug 1990 I sailed on the Q New West from DB to HB comming home to Richmond from HMCS Quadra. This was just before she was lifted, re-engined and put on rt 30.
The point is all 3 B class sisters has done rt 2 untill the 1990's.
As a side note Queen of Burnaby did a breif fill in stint in rt 30 too when obviously BCF was short on ships. This too was after she returned to BC ferries.
They are quite versatile vessels and can be used on any of the major runs when needed.
When Queen of Saanich had that run in with the fast ferry in Active Pass it was the Burnaby which replaces her.
It will be a sad day to see her retire.

I agree with you 100 percent that Canada has to stop, Off loading our "Dirty" ships to other countries. I have thought about this for years now. I also think Sadly enough that Ferry Companies and other shipping companies should be held accountable for Clean up of ships that they sell off. For Example Who is responsible for the Queen of Sidney if she sinks and her owners can't pay the bill? I think BC Ferries should be legally bound by law to make sure their ships are disposed of in a safe, environmentally friendly way, Either scrap them, or have BC ferries pay the bill for the clean up of "their" ships.

If I recall correctly even the Spirit Class ships were thought to be "Top" Heavy. Every Ship has its issues no matter what type, rather Ferry, etc. I can not wait to see the Seaspan Swift and Reliant come into Nanaimo. Now if LNG and Duel powered vessel's are having problems, it just makes you think of just how difficult and long it is going to take to get alternative fuels to combat Climate change. We might just have to go back to sail power. LOL!
The reality of what is required to make the change is "Easier said than Done".
Our local transit system in Nanaimo a few years ago made the Change to CNG busses, and as far as I can tell the new Transit service Center in Richmond (Hamilton) Now has CNG buses.

I have a question that I have been pondering for about a week or so now, a Legal Question in regards of Tugs.
Okay let us say the Queen of Surrey has a mechanical breakdown and is drifting towards the shores of Bowen Island with a full load of traffic on its car decks and full load of passengers. Now there is a tug nearby pulling a loaded barge full of Dangerous Cargo, say toxic Chemicals for a pulp mill somewhere.
Can the Coast Guard task the tug to assist with Keeping the Queen of Surrey from running aground? And if so is the Tug required legally to assist?
If the Tug is Legally required to "Drop" its load, Then Who is legally responsible for that Barge if that barge while drifting hits another vessel, or runs aground and causes those chemicals to leak on shore, or some other damage.
My point is is that the Tug boat captain is ultimately responsible for HIS tug and load First and if he is Legally obligated to assist in the other vessel's distress call, then who is responsible for the possible consequences if his load gets into trouble?

I would assume Deas Dock is her destination then. Why would they deliver the ship at Fraser Surrey when it is further up river than Deas? The 3 coastals were taken directly to Departure Bay.
