SOBC is now out of the dry dock and parked along side the wharf. I do not know if they have finished working on her or when she is suppose to leave.

...interesting that the MV Sir Wilfrid Laurier is near a BC Ferry, again.
I also find it interesting how the Spirits' bridges jut-out in the middle. At that photo angle, the middle of the bridge does look strange....

I find it interesting that our ferry is bigger than most of our naval ships. I guess in a time of need we could refit the larger vessels with weaponry and horizontally launched missiles out of the bow and stern doors. ;D Cheers,

Actually, the only ship in the navy that is bigger than one of our ferries is HMCS Protecteur (yes it is actually spelled that way...) at 171.9 meters, or 564 feet. That is only about 4 meters longer than a Spirit, which is 167 meters. The rest of the navy's ships are about the size of the unstretched Vs. The Halifax class frigates are about 330 feet long.
Actually I find it rather funny that the BC Ferries fleet is bigger than the Navy's Pacific and Atlantic fleets combined. 32 active ships in the navy versus 34 active ships in the BCF fleet (I am not including the Tsawwassen, Klitsa, CR or CI for the BCF fleet, and I am not including HMCS Provider or Huron for the Navy as they have been decommissioned.)

The navy ship in the picture is the HMCS Algonquin.

32 active ships in the navy Frigate x 12 Destroyer x 3 Supply x 2 MCDV x 12 Sub x 4, but actually 3 There's only 31 with the HMCS HURON decom'd, and one sub is out of service until at least 2011. Also, as a point of interest, as ship's in Her Majesty's fleet hold a comission, they should always have their names in capital letters. It's pretty easy to find DND sites that don't do this, but in a perfect world...

When did the cowichan and coquitlam go in??

Post by Ferryman on Feb 22, 2008 12:21:19 GMT -8
The Coquitlam usually goes in right after the summer season, in September. Then the Cowichan typically goes in imediately after her in October, and the Coquitlam will run in her place. The Cowichan went to Deas this season for her refit as well, when the Norad was down there too. The Coquitlam had her refit/drydocking at WMG in North Van.

oh ok right, i seem to remember that now. Didn't the Tachek have her refit at Deas too this fall/winter??
I also remember the Quinsam being out in November too i think for refit?

The Quinsam has definitely has her annual refit done. I remember the Bowen Queen as the replacement vessel. A few of the Bowen Queen sailings had to be cancelled on that run due to extreme low tides back in either November or December.
As for the Tachek, I can't remember, but it probably had it's refit done before taking over for the Kahloke on the Hornby Island run. That also makes the most sense considering it will remain on that run until late June when the Quinitsa returns back to service after her major refit.

HMCS Huron was sunk during target practice. I actually saw the show that they made of her final hours. Ironically, Huron's gun which was mounted on HMCS Algonquin did the final blow.

The North Island Princess is due for a refit and a main engine rebuild before the the end of 2008. Having lived on and off Texada Island for twenty six years, I would like to see the Bowen Queen place there during the NIP’s 7 to 10 week refit, but with the delays in the arrival of the Island Sky (see So... That I Vessel thread) it’s very likely that the much smaller Tachek will have to fill in. Cosmic Ray.

When are the Queen of Burnaby, Queen of Nanaimo and QQ2 due for Refit?

Queen of Nanaimo had a refit before Christmas. The Burnaby has yet to have one & I don't know if it even will. The Q of Tsawwassen is available (or soon will be) to allow this to happen.

Any idea when the PRQ will be arriving on Saturday? Do they usually come at high tide or does that only matter for the larger vessels?

Wait a minute, there’s no vessel in BC Ferries' fleet with the name Northern Princess? Did you mean the North Island Princess? She is due for a major engine refit some time before the end of this year, but I do not see this happening in July, with the Island Sky so far behind schedule. (Unless you want to get a whole bunch of Southern Gulf Islanders mad at BC Ferries for taking away their extra weekend boat on route 9.) Cosmic Ray.

SOBC should be leaving Esquimalt dry dock area this week. One of her holding tanks (sewage) was been redone.
Speaking of tanks. A few years ago one of the ferries was taken out of service to repair the fresh water tank. Apparently the oil and dirt from the car deck was falling through a crack in the tank. I've forgotten the name of the ferry. Does anyone recall this?

As I went past Deas today (twice), the Queens of Tsawwassen and Cumberland are now gone. The PRQ is sitting behind the Klitsa along side the wall at the side of the Deas Basin.
