Yes. But I came from Abbotsford because I had to help my aunt by TV. Do not it it's long. Got a problem with that? Being the wet blanket that I am... Mr Cheese- this post makes absolutely no sense. I think I've asked this before, but could you please take some time to read over what you're thinking of posting, before you click? I'd like to understand what you're saying, but sometimes, I have no idea. We want you to to be part of the conversation, and not just a source of perplexity. Thank you.

That sailing only goes as far as Village Bay - it requires a transfer to the Queen of Nanaimo at Village Bay to continue to Tsawwassen. The Mayne Queen sails out of Long Harbour once per week for this transfer. She does not continue to Tsawwassen.

Ok Mr. Awesome Cheese, after all your questions about photo locations near Tsawwassen, you've now obviously been at Fred Gingell park today or yesterday.
So now it's your turn to advise us:
Based on your experience, what should other people know about how to get the best locations and views from this spot ?
ie. directions and specific places in the park.
Did you use a tripod ?
Would you go there again ?

I think you have to be a real ferry nerd, with really good photo equipment, to bother with Fred Gingell Park. For us mere mortals with wee cameras, it's a long way from Tsawwassen. The main thrill for me has always been the daring walk across the border on the beach. Not sure how much longer that will be possible.

So, as you might've heard, I might be going down Vancouver Island's west coast some time this summer. Here are a few questions: -Apart for the Flugel Horn hill spot, what are some nice spots for vessel viewing on Route 21? -What about easily aceessible spots in Nanaimo for routes 2, 19 and 30? -And finally, what about Chemainus?

Route 21: Besides the hill spot, I don't think there's much on either side besides the terminals. Route 2:
-Newcastle Island Provincial Park, Nanaimo. Hike-in via ferry. Overlooks departure bay. -Whytecliffe Park, West Vancouver. Overlooks Queen Charlotte Sound and the entrance to Howe Sound. Also overlooks Route 8. Route 19: You can spot directly from the seawall adjacent to Nanaimo Harbour Terminal. The walkway runs parallel to the berth. Route 30:-Jack Point Park, Nanaimo. Hike-in. Overlooks Duke Point. -Fred Gingel Park, Delta. Overlooks Tsawwassen Terminal, optional hike to beach. Also overlooks Routes 1 and 9.

Can you see either route 2 or 30 ferries from that seawall in Nanaimo Harbour? If yes, what is the zoom you would advise to have (in mm please)?

My advice for preparation-work for all your "never been there before" ferry spotting is to use Google maps and Google Street-View. I have found those website very helpful in my preparation work. For Nanaimo, the seawall walkway has nice views of the Quinsam ferry (to/from Gabriola Island) and short glimpses of the arriving/departing Route-30 ferry. You'll see those views in many of my forum photos of: - MV Quinsam - MV Coastal Inspiration And of course you'll see those items and more in my Nanaimo harbour videos on my Youtube channel. There is also a lot of floatplane activity (DeHavilland Beavers and Otters) in Nanaimo harbour during daylight hours. Depending on when you are in Nanaimo, I'd be able to meet up with your family on the seawall and answer your "what's that? - where's that?" questions.

Ok, this is a kind of extreme question, but can you see Route 2 ships passing from the coast between Gibsons and Robert's Creek? How about route 22 from route route 17? And what are some good spots in Chemainus for the Kuper?

Route 22 from Route 17: Nope, nothing. Chemainus: There is a wharf directly adjacent to the terminal. I would recommend checking that out, as that is where we get most of our photos. I can't really think of any other locations...

I can't really think of any other locations... As MP has said, not much point for trying from any vantage points on the Sunshine Coast. Yes, you can see the Route 2 ships, in fact you do get a half decent view of seeing the two ships pass each other. But it's all at a great distance, and the ferries disappear over the horizon quite easily as they get closer to Nanaimo. Worth taking photos of? Not really. Worth seeing? Don't go out of your way. As for Chemainus, there aren't really any vantage points. I wouldn't count on the warf adjacent to the ferry dock since that is a private dock and the gate is locked quite often. However you never know, sometimes it is open. The only other potential location would be the Rotary Park/Boat Ramp. But this could only be any good for the first 5 minutes of the sailing, or the last 5 minutes of the sailing in terms of getting a view of the ship. If you're really motivated to take photos of the Kuper, your best best is to buy a ticket to Thetis Island. There are two warves on either side of the Ferry dock which have nice close locations. But that means spending a couple of hours on Thetis Island, which could be nice in the Summer. Not alot there other than a pub, and a little shop near the ferry terminal. If Chemainus is looking like a write off for ferry spotting, you could always just allow yourself more time in Crofton to see the Howe Sound Queen come and go. There are some decent places to set up for close views of the HSQ arriving and departing. To get the best views, time it with a low tide in order to access the little standed dock that is perched out on a sand bar. Access to the dock is covered over at high tide unless you have hip waders.

In Chemainus, the park with the boat ramp is a good spot, to see the Kuper ferry leaving "Horseshoe Bay" (Chemainus has an H-Bay of it's own). And then it's a good view to see the ferry heading across to Thetis or Penelakut. Address is: - right near the corner of Esplanade & Maple.

Has anybody ever been up to Mt. Galiano? If yes, then is it a sweet spot and is the hike to there hard? I went up in May of 2007 and it is, I think, well worth doing. Check these links for more info: www.hellobc.com/galiano-island/things-to-do/outdoor-activities/hiking.aspxwww.clubtread.org/mtgalno.htmwww.bodegaridge.com/points_of_interest.html A Flickr photo link worth clicking on... A photo of mine from 2007 - a view from atop Mt. Galiano... You will need about 3 hours to do this hike which allows for the best part of an hour wandering around on the summit; longer if you wait to get photos of a bunch of different ferries passing by. There are apparently three different trails with the most well known one starting near the cemetery on Active Pass Road. Trying to go up by one trail and back down by another is a good idea but involves having someone else take your car to an alternate trail head. In 2007 I went up the trail by the cemetery and then back down by one of the other trails and walked the roads back to my car. After doing all that I stumbled upon the cemetery which is just possibly the best ferry viewing spot on Galiano.
