The last time the Kwuna was in refit was in the fall of 2005. I remember this quite vividly, because this forum was discussing whether or not she was still sporting the expo colours at the time. Sure enough, when she arrived at Deas, she was already slugged. It was a fairly extensive refit at the time I remember too, much like the one done on the Klitsa and Kahloke recently. www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/54808921

I know she has slightly more powerful engines than all the other K class now, and that wasn't the way from the beginning.

I just double checked the BCF annual report from that year as well. New engines, Generators, Paint, etc were done on that refit.

In other news.... does anybody know why the SOBC is being removed from service tomorrow afternoon?

This sounds like some minor maintenance or an inspection that needs to be done. Saturday is not that busy a day to remove her from service for half a day.

Looks like the Quinsam is going in for "MLU - Part 2" this winter.
TEMPORARY VESSEL REPLACEMENT October 15, 2009 – April 15, 2010 Nanaimo Harbour – Gabriola Island
The MV Quinsam will be removed from service on the Nanaimo Harbour – Gabriola route from Thursday October 15, 2009 through Thursday April 15, 2010 to undergo the second phase of the vessel’s mid-life upgrade.
The Bowen Queen will be the temporary replacement vessel for duration of the scheduled maintenance to the MV Quinsam.
Our Commercial customers are advised that vehicles over 10,000 kg GVW will be restricted to centre lane loading only on the Bowen Queen. As a result, available commercial vehicle capacity will be reduced while the Bowen Queen is in service.
BC Ferries apologizes for any inconvenience caused to our customers by this refit. We look forward to returning the MV Quinsam to service on Friday April 16, 2010.

HAHAHAHA the Island Sky isn't perfect. At least the Chilliwack didn't break down it just was late. Always.... The I sky went out of service for a safety issue not a mechanical one. Nothing wrong with the ship but when it comes to coast guard regs you can't fool around. The Chilliwack is lucky to make it back and forth ;D

I heard the SOVI could be out for a few days cause they cant get a part for her. I heard it was a generator fire. If she is gonna be out for a few days why not bring the Rennie down to Swartz Bay to replace the C Cel so the C Cel can replace the SOVI then have the Cowichan replace the Rennie on route 2 seeing the Cowichan isent doing anything.
Update all SOVI sailings are cancelled today but they have added 8pm and 10pm sailings from both sides.

I imagine that the Cowichan could very well do some MD sailings on Route 2 (and possibly Route 3) this long weekend, especially since the Coquitlam is still tied up at Deas.

Anyone know if the SOBC is going out on Tuesday for refit cause they still have the New West listed on RBI taking over for the SOBC but I havent seen a service notice yet. Maybe they should take the SOVI out first, lol!

Yes SOBC is still scheduled to come out tuesday for refit. New West will be the #1 boat as the replacement
I bet the Renny has reduced food service cause they are short a few catering personnel

Looks like the SOVI is going to be out of service for at least a week. It doesn't say outright, but it looks like the SOBC's refit is being pushed back.
==================================================
SPIRIT OF VANCOUVER ISLAND OUT OF SERVICE AT LEAST ONE WEEK
VICTORIA – Preliminary assessment of the condition of the stand-by generator on the Spirit of Vancouver Island indicates the ship will be out of service for at least one week.
The Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route will continue to be serviced by the Spirit of British Columbia, the Coastal Celebration and the Queen of New Westminster. BC Ferries will make additional sailings as necessary.
Due to the reduced capacity on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route, assured loading tickets (ALTs) will not be honoured on this route on Fri., Oct. 9 as well as Mon., Oct. 12. ALTs will be accepted on the Tsawwassen – Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay routes.

Interesting development. Makes sense to me. Just curious, when was the last time the SOBC was based out of Swartz Bay? Has it ever happened? Perhaps when it was first in service in 1993? This means that the QNW will get lots of action this fall.

SOBC was last based at Swartz Bay in 1993, before the SOVI came into service.

Why is it that the SBC has to switch home ports? The Coastal should be replacing the SOVI and the NW should be the secondary vessel based at SWB. Less capacity on route 1 with the NW as a primary vessel.

Why is it that the SBC has to switch home ports? The Coastal should be replacing the SOVI and the NW should be the secondary vessel based at SWB. Less capacity on route 1 with the NW as a primary vessel. Because the Swartz crews are NOT trained on the New West. Despite their physical similarities, QoNW is not the same as a V class. Also, the last time a V class was run from SWB was last year, so most of the crew's familiarization has or is about to expire.

Here's my thinking on the most recent vessel deployment: I really don't think it's an issue of the Swartz Bay crews being trained (or not) on the CC. After all, the CC was #1 earlier this year when the SVI was in refit and also right now when the SVI is laid up. Not to mention that the CC was scheduled to take over during the SVI's originally scheduled refit in December. It's more of an issue of which ship is available to take over as #2 vessel. Earlier this year we still had the Queen of Vancouver. Then when the SVI's refit was originally slated for late-November to early December, the CR was going to fill in. But now since both the CR and Queen of Cowichan are about to enter refit, there's no ship left to take over as #2. The C-Class are out, the SB crews aren't trained on the New West.....that leaves the only remaining available Spirit and Coastal vessels to step up to the plate

Pardon me for asking but reading thread after thread here and realising we have a brand new Coastal class vessel sitting in swartz bay, why cant the Celebration become the #1 vessel out of SWB? Capacity issues? Brand new vessel sitting tied up... seems silly to me...
