Pardon me for asking but reading thread after thread here and realising we have a brand new Coastal class vessel sitting in swartz bay, why cant the Celebration become the #1 vessel out of SWB? Capacity issues? Brand new vessel sitting tied up... seems silly to me... Swartz Bay is the base for the number three vessel on Route 1.If the Celebration was used as the number one out of Swartz Bay, this would leave no ship available to be used as an extra because Swartz Bay crews are not trained on the New West...

Please be advised that Queen of Alberni will be removed from service October 21 to undergo required maintenance. This work is expected to take approximately 48 hours.
During this time, the Queen of New Westminster will sail in place of the Queen of Alberni on the same schedule. Commercial operators please note that the Queen of New Westminster has a height clearance of 13’8” and width of 12’ as compared to the 15’4” height clearance and width of 14’ on the Queen of Alberni.

The SBC is sure doing a few empty trips by switching home ports.

The "Special Event" is the Olympic torch relay. I'm assuming the torch will be on the 4:00 departure of the HOWE SOUND QUEEN.

The Queen of Burnaby is getting her port main engine fixed on the 7th and 8th of November. As a result, the last round trip on the 7th and the first round trip on the 8th are canceled. Link: www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=146236

The SBC is sure doing a few empty trips by switching home ports. What was the required maintenance done on the Alberni. Tonight as I was leaving my site office at Harmac, I watched turn around and back into the berth at Duke Point. And yesterday she seemed to limp into the berth. Anyone have any info on this?

I believe the Alberni was having some kind of gear box inspection on those two days.

Well, today's stormy weather on the coast has caused some service disruption on some of the monir routes. . .
The weather is also causing the Queen of Burnaby to be 30 minutes behind schedule. Currently she's moving at about 10 knots and diverting towards Texada for some calmer seas en route to Powell River.
The North Island Princess is just arriving at Powell River, 25 mintes after her scheduled 1110am departure from Westview, so she's over 30 mintes behind schedule as well.

Although the EC Wind Warning has been removed for the Queen Charlottes and North Coast, it's still too much for the Northern Adventure to make today's crossing from Prince Rupert to Skidegate. . . Link to service notice HERE.An animated map of WAVE HEIGHTS shows that really high seas are to continue for the next couple days in the region. **EDIT** BCFS has modified their schedule because of this cancellation. . . This recheduled time is 4 hours earlier than their normal departure time of 11pm from Prince Rupert. I'm guessing this isn't an 'additional' sailing but just an earlier departure to get people on their way that much sooner after the Northern Adventure returns from its Inside Passage trip. It must suck to have that Thursday sailing cancelled since there isn't another sailing for over 3 days after that. What happens to the people that don't have a place to stay other than bucking up for a hotel? Do they get compensated at all?

Wave heights of 7 to 9 metres are forecast for today in Hecate Straight. If I recall correctly, they won't sail if the waves are 4 metres or more, so not really much of a surprise that sailings are canceled.

That would be an interesting ferry ride up there today. The San Juans are seeing wind delays as well, and it looks like Chelan is using the protected routes to get to Anacortes - i.e. Peavine Pass and Bellingham Channel.

Print Version Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Victoria (Swartz Bay) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Updated as of: 5:45 PM Please be advised that BC Ferries has made the following adjustments to the scheduled sailings between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen for November 13 and 15, 2009. Friday, November 13 - the following sailigs will be cancelled: Swartz Bay Tsawwassen 4:00 pm 6:00 pm Additional sailing will be provided at the following times on Friday, November 13: Swartz Bay Tsawwassen 4:00 pm 6:00 pm Sunday, November 15 - the following sailigs will be cancelled: Swartz Bay Tsawwassen 12:00 pm 2:00 pm 4:00 pm 6:00 pm Additional sailings will be provided at the following times on Sunday, November 15: Swartz Bay Tsawwassen 4:00 pm 6:00 pm These schedule adjustments are necessary while the Queen of New Westminster assists in providing service on the Tsawwassen to Duke Point run. For details on other scheduled sailings please check our website at www.bcferries.com. We apologize for any inconvenience these schedule adjustments may cause. Copyright ©2008, British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. --------------------------------------------------------------- It looks like the Alberni needed her refit ASAP. The New West is now on route 30 and the CR is still finishing her refit at Departure Bay. That leaves no #2 vessel at Swartz Bay for this weekend. I was wondering which ship is scheduled to do the 1600/1800 trip out of Tsawwassen so I phoned that terminal. Apparently it's going to be the New West and the 1515/1745 round trip on rt 30 will be cancelled on those 2 days.

I guess route 2 will see an increased demand and the SBC will be doing several empty non revenue sailings.

Looks like today's weather is causing some cancellations at Tsawwassen. Both the 315pm and 545pm Route 30 sailings from each end have been cancelled. The Route 1 ferries haven't left their terminals yet either for their 3pm sailings.
**UPDATE**
I have heard that they have cancelled Route 1's 3pm and 5pm sailings. I see cars on the Swartz Bay webcam heading for the exits, not wanting to wait around for the chance of a 7pm sailing, which might get cancelled too if the weather continues to blow.
Looks like if you want to cross the strait, it's Route 2 only, thanks to their protected terminals.

Mind you winds had been much worse here previously recently but mostly overnight. I think that Tsawwassen officials and -based crews know what they're talking about and used their near-6th-sense in anticipation, along with most often accurate GC weather office reporting in fending away any further possibly very disappointed travellers to the terminal.

Ferry Routes currently experiencing sailing cancellations:
Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay Tsawwassen - Duke Point Texada Island - Powell River Cambell River - Quadra Island Quadra Island - Cortes Island Skidegate - Alliford Bay
The Queen of Burnaby is currently sailing its 315pm sailing from Comox to Powell River, but after almost 1 hour she hasn't even made it half way across the strait. Every time I look at it on Siitech she's posting a speed of around 7-9 knots.I've seen as low as 5 knots. Winds in that area are gusting to 90km right now.
**UPDATE**
The Queen of Burnaby just arrived at Westview. Crossing took 2 hours. Winds at Comox Airport are gusting to 100km right now.
Tug and Barge is back up and running in the Charlottes.

Bad weather indeed here on the Wet Coast. We're under a wind warning here on the east Island, with winds gusting almost to 100 km/h. It just isn't safe to run ferries in these conditions, plain and simple.
