I am really suprised that they making it a RORO. Why? All of BC Ferries' vessels are ROROs, except for the Stormaway III... RORO simply means roll-on-roll-off, which happens on all other BC Ferries (and WSF boats too, except the Skidget and Kalamity). Just because they don't look like those monsters that ship cars in from Japan, doesn't mean they aren't ROROs. ;D

Bow doors on the Sonia - big mistake...Why do BCFS always have to butcher a vessel - with there dice & slice routine? Could you elaborate on that for us? Why is it such a big mistake?

If the C's were a supermarket brand, they would be 'President's Choice'. Big, bland, functional, utilitarian. Designed by a committee. Nothing memorable. The V's lines were ruined by lifting, but they're still chunky and full of character, and.... they have a bow. And a stern.

I like them both. The V's are classic ships but I do love the C class ships too.

Back to the Sonia/Nor-Ad... The following article appeared in the Queen Charlotte Islands Observer on 4 January 2007. It is interesting reading. No mention of a bow door being installed.

Thanks for taking the time to scan & post that, Jim. It was a good read. And Nor-Ad is a good nickname for her. Whether it's the perfect ship for the routes or not, I'm still excited about a new ship in our fleet.

We'll probably end up liking the ship, and accepting that she was the best they could come up with, given the circumstances. The tantrums over the name will also seem kind of silly in retrospect. No dumber than having a vessel called the 'Queen of Chilliwack' serving Bella Coola.
Don't know if people will ever enjoy backing large vehicles or trailers off the boat in extreme tides, though, and are they really going to have just a cafeteria, and no restaurant? That, and possibly the lack of a forward lounge and few windows might have more of an effect on how people feel about the ship, than it's profile from shore.

The 'Queen of Chilliwack' used to be stationed out of Swartz Bay. (approximately 15 years ago) It did the Pender Island run. I was on it a few times.

WCK's posting shows the gutted interior of Sonia's forward lounge. Would it not be a logical time to put those panorama windows in? Probably BC Ferries will do things in their usual manner. After a summer season of complaints regarding no windows, they'll end up ripping itl apart again to put them in. But heh that's the way a quasi government organization works.

It's slightly more time consuming that "just putting them in," and they may play a big factor in it. Although some have directed unjustified criticism at BCFS for gutting the interior they are doing things that are almost required as the ferry service it was offering in Europe isn't too comparable to the needs that will be placed on her in Northern Biritish Columbia service. I would like to see the modifications done too, and the sooner the better (I hope it's now) but I can well understand why it wouldn't be.

If they do a positioning cruise this Spring I am going, but I am heading to Vegas the last weekend in March so that could screw it up.

I dont know if they will be doing a positioning cruise this year I was wondering the same thing too. They are suppose to be having open houses for the public up north so if they have one in Port Hardy I will be going up for that.

Well, I found myself making a last minute trip to Victoria Friday and decided to swing by the Graving Dock to see what I could see. Turns out, I found a half decent place to spy a look along the railway tracks. Unfortunately, the only camera I has was my cell phone.. However, looks like work is progressing from the outside. The life boats have been removed, and lots of activity on the decks. I could also see welding flashes from inside the forward section behind the big round windows. No sign of any work around the bow that would indicate any doors going in...

Cool photo! I have been along the railway tracks by the drydock. I havent walked along there in years though. One of the better spots to see what is going on in the drydock!
