The Sea Busses are Burrard Otter and Burrard Beaver.
They did use two very important names from BC history, but by prefixing them Burrard- they have left the originals open.
A personal rant: I never again want to have fine, seaworthy ships named for some politician's benefit. It may be the first Queen of Surrey (ex-Stena Danica), named by NDP heavyweight Ernie Hall in the mid-70's; or Q Of Chilliwack, promoted by Socred/Liberal John Les.
Surrey and Chilliwack are fine communities, but they are not seaports, and have no connection with coastal seamanship.
BCF vessels are soundly-built deepwater ships, staffed by the finest seafarers in the world. We disrespect the boats and their crews with silly names.
Queen Of Dawson Creek, why not? Richard Neufeld is one of the govt's most senior members. It must be his turn to name a big boat.

To go with the other spirits.
Spirit of the Coast Spirit of the Fraser Spirit of the Georgia Straight
When you have to put II at the end of the name you do not say it, it is only for registration and tradition. But they won't use Queen of because the ships are privatly owned and not gouvernement,
Queen of Vancouver II Queen of Victoria II Queen of Richmond
The old fast cat names minus the cat sound really goo and mactch.

It doesn't matter if a ship is owned by the government ... you can call her Empress Of India/Canada/Ireland, etc. as did CPR, a private company; as did fur traders with their Queen Charlotte in the 18th century (from which ship came our name for the islands).
The Catholic Church does not actually own all the ships called St. Paul, St. Mary or whatever, either.
While I am ranting, I don't like the Spirit names much. They are too long and pretentious. Why not just MV Vancouver Island and MV British Columbia?
However, the Spirits do have a logical naming scheme. VI and BC commemorate the two colonies that united in 1866 to form pre-Confederation BC. The only worthy addition to the series is Spirit Of New Caledonia. That would recall the pre-BC name for the mainland when it was HBC territory.
Anyway, geographical names can be a pain. Sail to Salt Spring Island on the Skeena Queen or the Howe Sound Queen. Travel to Gabriola on Quinsam, named for a river 150 miles farther north.
Powell River Queen goes to ... Quadra Island, and good ol' Cumberland would have to sprout wheels to reach her namesake town.

So would much of the C-class, and the Chilliwack.

Plus the Powell River Queen once ran on Saltery Bay she was there till 1991 when the Cap took over than the Chilliwack and Tsawwassen took over shortly after

BCF should stick with the "Queen" name for the Super C's. I think the "Spirit" names should be reserved for only the Spirit class boats. I am a history buff, and I don't think they should break with tradition.

I'll say it again...Queen of Vancouver (II), Queen of Victoria (II) and Queen of Nanaimo (II).

Post by Ian on Aug 17, 2005 14:15:28 GMT -8
First of Doug the queen of nanaimo is still going to be around when all the super c's are in service.
Second, OMG get of it, bc ferries is no longer crown corporation, they are not going to use queen names unless they are really good, the name queen of vancouver II sounds awful and cursed for a new ship.

They're still a good company and if we don't use Queen of Victoria or Sidney II or a new Queen name what are we gonna call the new shipsA good name for a new ferry if it hasn't been used somewhere yet would be Spirit of Captain George Vancouver or just cut the Spirit of out of the name

Spirit of Juan De Fuca Queen Charlotte Spirit
They may even choose a new naming scheme all together. because they arn't S class so why would they name them like S class?

Queen of Richmond Queen of Delta Queen of...some island coastal town.
I think they should stick with the Queen of [blank] style. I like the way it sounds. Why mess with it?

Surrey and Chilliwack are fine communities, but they are not seaports, and have no connection with coastal seamanship. Surrey has a container terminal on the Fraser.

I was thinking Duchess of Delta or maybe Duchess of Tofino, but the Quinsam should be renamed the Gabriola Queen, then the Quinitsa be named the Denman Queen, the Klitsa the Kuper Queen, then the Kahloke the Hornby Queen

OR NOT! Its bad enough you guys are trying to name something that wont arrive for another 2 years, but dont rename vessels that you already have names for. The Klitsa, Kahloke, and 2 Q's dont need new names. they have fine names. i think we should stick to the original topic of the super c names.
