To Alex: a belated apology.
Surrey's Fraser River docks are part of BC's marine industry. I live in New Westminster and work at Annacis Island (Delta). The Surrey docks are in my view every day.
On the main topic - however. BC Ferries' vessels are an expression of our pride in the long history of seamanship on this coast.
New BCF ships deserve better than II or III in a series; and they are not fanciful cruiseships.
BC Ferries sail on schedule, year-round, in all weather. The new vessels deserve names that reflect their sturdiness, the courage and skill of their crews, and the seawater routes they serve.

I missed a PS to the above rant: 25 years ago, I sailed from La Paz to Mazatlan on the Mexican ferry system.
The Mexicans took their coastal ferries seriously. Our huge Swedish-built ship was Corumuel (a corruption of "Cromwell" - named for a British frigate that plagued the west coast in Spanish times, and is still known as an off-shore wind that drives small boats into harbour.)
Her sister was Topolobampo, named for the La Paz harbour. The other west coast ships had predictable names: Lazaro Cardenas; Juarez; Madero; and other political heroes.

Does anyone on this forum know when or if - BC Ferries employees will be send to Germany for training? They have junior managment (Captains) there now, there are two on the project. I know it doesn't answer your question, but there are "front line" working people involved over there.

They are training on the simulator and probably helping with some design stuff from a crew member point of view.

I get the idea that Flensberger knows what it's doing, because they build a lot of ships. So they probably know when to begin training the purchaser's crew, and when to seek input from the purchaser.
So Mac's comment makes sense to me....this sounds like good business practice. I've very happy that we will be getting world-class ships to ride on here in BC.

Spanish names for BC Ferries would be fine, but only with a BC coastal connection.
I have promoted my "historical ships" proposal enough already. If we choose to honour people, some primo Spanish names would be Narvaez, Quadra and Galiano.
Sorry, I can't think of a French name that fits with our BC coastal tradition. The Canadian Coast Guard vessels Radisson and Cartier are properly named for important people in our national history, but there were no French adventurers on our Pacific coast.
The LaVerendyre brothers should be remembered: they reached the Rocky Mountains overland 60 years before America's Lewis and Clark.
Still, I can't support an MV LaVerendrye in the BCF fleet.

I would like to see a "WAC Bennett" as a ferry name. I think that enough time has passed to make this a historical gesture, and not a political one.
Re explorers: I like David Thompson and Sanford Fleming.
I wonder if there would be any support for a Vancouver Island historical name such as James Douglas or a Mr. Dunsmuir.?
I just throw these out as ideas for discussion.....I haven't put a lot of serious thought into this, except for WAC Bennett which I've thought about for a while now.

re Bill Bennet (mini-wac):
I didn't know he was living in Palm Springs. That's interesting news.
I thought he made $$ in insider-trading with the Doman brothers a few years ago.

Lots of Canadian seniors live part of the year in Palm Springs.
I personally wouldn't favour naming a boat after a man, but it could just be me;)

My last suggestions before the contest ends (not to the ferries themselves, though) are a similar naming scheme as the Pacificats: Explorer, Discovery and Voyager. Or how about Challenger...?

Four days remain, and I thought of a few: Spirit of the Coast, Queen of the Islands II, Spirit of the Pacific. I think that "Queen" or "Princess" sounds to old. I like to stick with "Spirit", or like Brian said, nothing at the begining at all.

Brian, I like your ideas. I thought maybe after famous BC personalities.. and not neccessarily politicians. Maybe even women. But it says in the rules that it can't be "Queen of" or "Spirit of".. and also remember it has to be available.. so you'd better check it in the Canada ship registry first.

OK - The closing date has been and passed - so what is the name for the New Super C's - has anyone heard - seen in the press - asked BC Ferries - Mr. Hahn for example.... It was in the paper aprox two weeks ago. By the begining of the summer season they'll announce the winners.

Most "Queen of..." vessels are named after a coastal B.C. city. For instance,
(Port) Alberni Burnaby Coquitlam (Lake) Cowichan Esquimalt Nanaimo New Westminster Oak Bay Prince Rupert Saanich Sidney Surrey Tsawwassen Vancouver Victoria
So if the Super Cs are going to be called "Queen of" something, I think the names should fit this theme. Possibilities (some of which were already suggested and I liked):
Queen of Bella Coola Queen of Courtenay Queen of Qualicum Queen of Richmond Queen of Sooke Queen of Squamish Queen of Tofino
I'm generally not in favour of rehashing already used names and I'm not sure if these Super Cs are Spirit vessels. SOBC and SOVI will still be the largest ships in the fleet.
