I saw a photo of the Hyak puffing thick black smoke out during departure from quite a few years ago...Anybody recall when that may have been and why the Hyak is such a smoker vs. the other Supers?

She received the Spokane's old engines, which were three-pack-a-day smokers... not sure how much overhaul they got (I'd hope a total).
The Elwha is usually a smoker too, though her smoke tends to be whiter. Especially if they're running one specific engine... ;D

Yep, pretty much a total overhaul, all four got new packs and turbos! She's a non-smoker now.

Hyak sailing through the San Juans Totally fixed...I was surprised to see nothing coming from her stacks...The Elwha, well, let's say that she did NOT get an overhaul to the engines. The interior now has some photos hanging on the walls again. There's also some new coat hangers randomly placed throughout the cabin. I think that's the extent of the "improvements" though. Everything else still looks the same She was running on reduced power on Monday because something was not right.

The interior photos were recycled from a Steel-Electric, I think... where did the random coat hangers appear? The ones along the exterior bulkheads between the windows have been there all along...

I was wondering that too...That indeed seems like a random addition. They have the same wood trim as the photo frames, which is different than the original ones, which is why they caught my attention.

I also think in all my time on the boats, I've seen someone use those hangers maybe once.

That's an absolutely fantastic picture of Hyak! I took one of Hyak slipping past Lopez the day after you took this one on our way from Orcas to Anacortes. We were on Elwha.

Fresh pics of Hyak today (24-Jun-2012). We were on Hyak's late running 14:20 sailing from Orcas to Anacortes Hyak approaching Orcas Island unloading vehicles at Orcas Hyak's mostly vintage 1967 cabin. I say mostly because lighting has been updated, and of course, she did not have an elevator in 1967. Table tops and seat cushions are original, though Hyak's pickle forks

That is such awesome project to under take. By the way, when does she get her Mid-life upgrade and a new interior?

Good luck. Sexy if it works, nightmare if it doesn't... *sigh* the mighty Hyak is one of my faves, because it hasn't been diddled with (much). That, and the engineers are a good bunch.

I hope to God they leave that passenger compartment alone... I am gonna miss that original interior if they touch it.

I hope to God they leave that passenger compartment alone... I am gonna miss that original interior if they touch it. The likelihood that it will be left intact is pretty small. Personally I would welcome an upgrade... while the materials have been renewed over the years, the color scheme (and the tremendously uncomfortable Eames-esque chairs) have survived. I'd be surprised if they leave it.

Hyak is going Seattle to Bremerton route on November 15 to don't know. Never mind. The Hyak will be in Eagle Harbor from December 1st to December 24 and then on Standby. Is WSF waiting for the Olympic Class to do a mid-life upgrade and the new interior?

According to what I read in the August edition of the Marine Log Magazine she is scheduled for her renovation the 2nd Quarter of 2014. I am sure that could change at anytime though.

So it looks like they will be waiting for the interior reno until Oly-1 hits the run... if at all. And if that's what they're doing, then the Evergreen may run a few more months.
