Some pics of the Hyak taken on August 14-16th. She was our boat to Orcas and back for our trip there: First, Mountains and Ferries: The Hyak and Baker as she arrives in Anacortes: MV Hyak and Mt Baker - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr With the Elwha at Anacortes. She's in Slip 2, the farthest from us: MV Elwha in Slip 1 and MV Hyak in Slip 2, Anacortes - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Docked at Orcas: MV Hyak at Orcas Island - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Arriving at Orcas, the Friday afternoon: MV Hyak arriving at Orcas Island - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr From the float right next to the USCG dock. She does look huge from down there: MV Hyak at Orcas Island - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr It had been a long time since I've wanted to get that "Spider" shot on one of the supers. That day I was walking on so I could finally get it: MV Hyak at Orcas Island - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr That same '67 vintage cabin. While many hate it I still find it funny that she still has all of her original interior in pretty good state for something being used everyday for almost 46 years: Cabin, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The wake in Harney Channel: Wake, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Bulwark name!! The boat was not full but they put the Shaw cars in the two outer lanes of the main car deck for faster unloading in Anacortes, so they had the ropes back: Bulwark Name, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr I like this photo for two reasons. First the cars are neatly lined like they always do it on the ferries but second it also shows how narrow are the lanes on the supers: Car Deck, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Upper Nameplate: Upper Nameplate, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The galley. I like the way the three seats in front are put in relationship: Galley sitting, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr The deserted cabin as the boat was unloading in Anacortes: Bench seats, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr And finally, the sun reflecting in one of her bridge windows from the foot pax walkway: Bridge, MV Hyak - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr

I just love these ships. First ever WSF I sailed on was the Elwha. She looks like she has some of the same seating as the Hyak in the middle of the cabin. I thought the Hyak had the worst interior but I dont think it is that bad. The Super's are awesome ships. I really want to get down there for another WSF trip soon!

Any news about the Hybrid Hyak project? WSDOT's website says they have been reviewing the proposal since June. Has the failure to pass a 2013-2015 transportation budget delayed the project?

Did you guys hear the Hyak collided with a sailboat and sunk it. Luckily everyone on both boats were ok. The Hyak was heading to Anacortes for inspection when it collided.

A bit of comparison of these two stories, if I may: The KOMO report starts out "The captain and another crewmember of the ferry Hyak were at fault for colliding with a small boat....". This is actually not the conclusion of the Vessel Incident Investigation Report, as found on this webpage. The Seattle Times story correctly reports that "The crew of the ferry Hyak could have avoided a Sept. 13 crash.....". This information reflects the content of the report that they are reporting on. While some people may not make a distinction between those points, there is a big distinction there. As someone who once upon a time managed a fleet of land vehicles, and their drivers, accidents were inevitable. But one thing we would look at was who was at fault. This is a legal determination of who caused the accident. From a quick reading of the report, it appears that the crew did not cause the accident, as KOMO appears to have erroneously reported. The other thing we would look at is could the accident have been avoided. That question asks whether anything could have been done to avoid the accident. It appears that, pending further review, the report is saying that the accident could have been avoided. I can't comment either way on that, but if true, certainly isn't "causing an accident". We had a lot more of the latter than the former. But, especially in this case, it is an important distinction, that KOMO News dropped the ball on. The KOMO report also has some interestingly worded statements in it's report that makes conclusions that just weren't there in the report. As an aside, KOMO also referred to a "Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley". Seems they had some fact-checking problems today all around. Oh my. This was originally posted in the WSF service bulletins, so I decided to shift this quote over to here to avoid interfering with the other topic of discussion currently happening on that thread. It's not too often that I check over things on this side of the forum, and the story about this incident involving the Hyak and the M/Y Tasaya only just caught my eye today. Media reporting issues aside, I spent some time reading the WSDOT vessel incident report and was a little bit shocked about some of the details of what was happening on the bridge of the Hyak that day. Normally I have more sympathy for people in "training", but I was very disappointed to see them report that the Second Mate altered the rudder incorrectly to Starboard instead of to Port. A Second Mate is someone who has at least a few years of experience working on ships, and also a considerable amount of time in school to cover a variety of topics. People make mistakes for sure, but this one should have been a no brainer for an experienced mariner, unless for some reason the direction of the helm could be easily be confused on this particular vessel - I don't know how that vessel operates. I'm curious to see the final outcome of this incident, and to be honest, it's not looking too good for those involved based on what's stated in the Collision Regulations.

Part of a Hyak sunset-sequence, from July 14, 2014 in Anacortes. I like the glow in the windows, on this one Chelan is mainly hidden behind, in berth #1. I was thinking, that's an impressive search light, attached to Chelan's mast.
