I dusted off the ol' Nikon D60 for the first time in nearly a year, just for this occasion. I didn't make it down to the pier quite as early as hoped, but I didn't miss too much at least. Plus, I had to nearly run in order to not be late for school once capturing these photos for you guys. A Nanny on the Rocks photo by Braedon Bigham. - He had submitted this photo to the Times Colonist, which is where I saw it. - I sent a Facebook message to Mr. Bigham a week ago, asking for permission to post his photo here. 1 week later, and no reply from Mr. Bigham to my FB message. On the assumption that because he submitted his photo to the Times Colonist, he'd be ok with it being posted here, and because I waited a reasonable time for his response, I'm posting this here now. If Mr. Bigham sees his photo here and asks for it to be removed, I'll gladly remove it. ----------------- There, now here's the photo which will have some historical value for our forum's photo record of this ship.  |

After a lucky early dismissal from class, while I was walking through the Lonsdale Quay on the way home, I happened to notice that the drydock appeared to be much lower than I had seen it earlier in the day. It quickly became obvious that the Nanaimo was about to be re-launched. Having just missed the bus that could have got me home in good time, I decided waste no time, and had to basically run home to grab the camera and fire the car up with the intention of heading to Prospect point. I'm not in the greatest of shape to run up the hills of Lonsdale Ave, but it was a great workout at least. I didn't think to grab my winter jacket though, which sucked later on. I managed to make it to Prospect Pt in good time, arriving at about 14:50. It was annoying to have to pay for parking there, but I thought just to be safe that I should buy two hours of parking instead of one. Sure enough, close to 16:00, she was lining up to pass under the bridge after just over an hour of standing on the platform, freezing my butt off with the cold North Westerly wind. Glad I bought the extra hour of parking. After capturing these photos, I fought my way back across the bridge through rush hour traffic, and actually drove halfway to Horseshoe Bay in the hopes that she was going to stop there. But, after stopping and double checking the AIS on my phone, her heading was very obvious that she was going to start rounding Spanish Banks to head back towards home. All in all, I'm happy with the results. It was even kind of fun spending some time at the viewing platform, ship watching and people watching. It seemed like an Asian tour bus would roll through every 15 minutes, and I was a target to take their picture of them standing in front of the view. Anyways, I'll quit yapping. Similar to how I feel about the trees at the Spiral Tunnels viewpoint in Yoho Park, it's a pity that a windstorm hasn't knocked down those particular trees in Stanley Park that are obstructing the once-fine photo view of a ship when she's directly under the bridge. |

And they probably won't ever get cut down unless they're actually dying, because that would cause local environmentalists/ treehuggers to go into total freakout mode. You wouldn't want that to happen, would you?  At least that's what would happen in Seattle. Some people can really get attached to certain trees. When they get cut down, people put flowers on the stumps or erect a memorial of some sort. Whenever I see that, I just am amazed at how attached people can get to certain trees. I can understand this tree attachment when it's a really big tree that was the only one that survived being logged 100 years ago, (like one at my cabin) but with other trees that are not that unique, I don't get it. |

That is a first rate photo Chris!
The fall storm a few years back that mowed down much of Stanley Park's forest did an excellent job of improving the views from Prospect Point. The job was, however, less than perfect.

Then there are those who say, it's a park, and not a vantage point for ship spotters. I know... takes all kinds, and not always easy to reconcile different interests.

WOW! The paint crew at Deas really went the distance in restoring the 'Nanny' to pristine elegance. The must have missed my memo to return the great Seal of British columbia to just above the bow doors but nonetheless, perhaps getting rid of the 'slugs' would have been a better choice. My thanks to MileagePhoto for taking the time to get those shots of a piece of my early days at the British Columbia Ferry Authority.  |
