Drone footage of the recent tow of the Burnaby, upbound on the river back to Deas B.C. Ferries can't be happy with the latest 'towing' charges for 2 tugs etc. Meanwhile the 'Nanny' awaits her fate on the other side of the world. What a way for 2 grand BCFS vessels to exit the stage.

I've read recently in Western Mariner about the dismantling of the heritage tug, Sea Lion. It's probably being done responsibly, but the consensus is that it's painful to witness. Every old vessel sees the end of useful service, and given the size of old car ferries, there's little chance of them finding long term employment after being retired. I'm just happy that the Queen of Nanaimo didn't meet a deadly end in the open Pacific while in service to the Fijian archipelago. That would have been far worse than providing employment, albeit dangerous, to the torchbearers at Alang.

Very well said Neil, the only boat that I can think of that is not having a rough time is the rhododendron, and maybe the Qoti, but its looking a bit rough lately.

Hiyu is doing pretty well, though not sure how much longer that will last. Current owners have her up for sale. Evergreen State is still doing ok, and the current owner has very ambitious plans for that vessel. Hopefully, it pans out.

When were her solariums covered? During her time on the Victoria - Seattle run, perhaps?

When were her solariums covered? During her time on the Victoria - Seattle run, perhaps? Yes, that was it. They needed extra indoor space for all those passengers. There are pics somewhere in the earlier pages of this thread.

Regarding the Queen of Burnaby, and the disposition of the ship:
Apparently the 'Burnaby will be towed south to Mexico, presumably for ship-breaking.
Apparently it will be a Seaspan tug that does this tow, and all was being readied when the Seaspan strike postponed things.
- I was told this by an acquaintance recently, who heard it from someone acquainted with the tug boat operators. So take this as you will, for whatever it's worth.

The open-air solarium was enclosed for the SEA-VIC run. I think one side housed a duty-free shop. Don't know what the other side was used for. As for a potential trip to Mexico, please keep us posted and I'll track her. She would be the sixth of the Seven Sisters to end her life as a ship. VICTORIA in India. VANCOUVER in Mexico. SAANICH in Mexico. ESQUIMALT in Mexico. NANAIMO in India. I invite you to visit the NANAIMO's pages for her recent voyage from Suva, Fiji, to Alang, India, via Singapore. Check out Captain Louis Madden's Facebook page for pictures and videos of her trip (he commanded her sailing under her own power from Fiji to India).

The Queen of Burnaby has interior empty and light fixture has removed, Generator has reached end of lifespan and can't turn on the power and interior is start to mold and rust on outside.

Wow bc ferries really does not want her Im guessing her interior assets were donated to the nanaimo and chilliwack when they went to fiji Some spares were taken when the Nanaimo left for Fiji but by that point the Burnaby was already too far gone to ever be used as a vessel again. I recall one of ther generators being Frankensteined into the Nanny as a powerplant for one of her bow thrusters after she (the Burnaby) was laid up at Deas back in the summer of (I want to say) 2017(?). That was pre-retirement of the Nanaimo just to keep her going for a few more months and that donor generator was already thousands of hours overdue for replacement or overhaul. Weirdly, my high school grad was on the Burnaby back in 2003 and even then I remember speculating with a friend about what uses she'd have once retired. Just goes to show that almost 20 years ago she was already showing signs that her end of life as a BC Ferry was apparent. (As a couple of teenage boys we figured she'd make a wicked paintball venue). I love my classic ferries but the Burnaby is done, done, done.

The Northern Sea Wolf has a pretty good stock of assets that have lived on from ships that have been retired. The Aft mast from the Burnaby was repurposed as a mast on the NSW. Two of the evacuations slides, or at least just the box/storage casings from the Nanaimo are on the NSW. Also, one of the Rescue Boats is from the Queen of Chilliwack, which was new from the Chilliwacks last major refit prior to being sold. Sundeck railing mesh/screens were also refurbished and put into use on the Sea Wolf and Skeena Queen. I imagine other items like seating have been removed and kept in storage for use on other vessels as time goes on

So I suppose that the only things left onboard would be some carpet the cafe gift shop and washrooms and probably a tiny bit of bridge equipment but other then that it is the steel shell of the former queen of burnaby slowly turning into the queen of sidney

I believe the vessel is considered hazardous. Which is why no scrapping company is willing to take her, that is how bad it is. So BC Ferries may have to re-evaluate its options for the future of the vessel.

I'm sure there are all sorts of old vessels infested with what you're describing, that get broken down every day in shipbreaking boneyards. Perhaps our current government- to their credit- aren't willing to send the ' Burnaby to an unsafe breakdown... but I don't know.

The vessel is just a shell with a collapsed parking deck and roof... Where is your proof to back this up? This forum is not a place for spreading unfounded rumors or hearsay.

The reason I know this is because I know someone who got to take a peek in her and they said there was a terrible smell and they said the car deck was really bad they could not get past the car deck due to the smell and he almost passed out but he did get to climb on the bow he did wanna go in the lounge but it was really ruff he said the floor felt like a craker almost if that makes sense lol but anyways he did look threw the side windows and saw what looked like stuff hanging off the roof.

Oh well, that settles it then. You know some guy who took a peek and noticed a smell. Obviously, that means the car deck has fallen in and the lounge ceiling has collapsed. Good grief.

Saying "someone you know told you" is quite literally the definition of hearsay. Claiming such as fact rather than rumour is a good way to get posts removed. Please be mindful of that going forward.
