Okay, here they are... the long awaited first photos of the mighty Kahloke, back after her lengthy stint at the fleet surgeon's.
Actually, I'm just posting these two shots to show that, from the travelling public's point of view, nothing has changed, other than a fresh paint job and the car deck receiving a light grey coating, which is already cracking in places, after less than two months in service. Why do they bother?
I guess all the money was spent on boring stuff like engineering and keeping the old scow afloat for another twenty years or so. No improvements to the cafeteria, gift shop, or that annoying kid's play area near the bow windows. I think they washed the floor in the lounges, though.

Down the Island I pulled over at the rest stop above Buckley Bay and got shot of the Kahloke. The Klitsa was tied up alongside the dock.. as it was Saturday she wasn't doing any supplimentary service.

Spot the ferry... Denman Island is lost in the fog (visible land is Vancouver Island), and the Kahloke is just emerging heading for the Shingle Spit dock, early this afternoon.

Again, arriving at Shingle Spit, this time viewed from the Bench Trail:

A new thread for photos of the current BCF ship with this historical name. - ie the 3-lane barge that is part of the K-Klass, not the old Langdale Queen....haha.

A tiny shot of the Kahloke on it's way to Denman this afternoon, with very changeable weather. From the ridge trail on Mt Geoffrey, I could see the individual rain squalls for miles along the east flank of Vancouver Island.

Two more; one, bedded down for the night while adding to the bright lights of downtown Shingle Spit, the other, another shot from the bench trail showing the work barge. Photos by daughter Laura, who will one day be a passionate ferry photographer, with some parental guidance. I wonder if the lovely Kahloke feels a certain sense of kinship as she gazes over at that barge... perhaps as to a not so distant cousin...

I think you should introduce your daughter to the excitement and drama of the monthly flagship contest, at least for the normal end-of-month ballot. Quite a thrill to observe this process of high-stakes photography. ---------------- I wonder if the lovely Kahloke feels a certain sense of kinship as she gazes over at that barge... perhaps as to a not so distant cousin... haha, the Kahloke does look quite similar to the "other" barge.

A pretty crazy video of the poor little Kahloke battling the Winds between Denman and Hornby Islands. Prime example of why that route has the larger Tachek in the Winter. I'm surprised they kept going with the way the ship rolled around in the dock. Most Captains would call it quits at that point. The dock work wouldn't have helped either I'm sure.

From the December Western Mariner, from their shipyard report (Allied) :
...the MV KAHLOKE, from BC Ferries' Denman-Hornby islands crossing, was in to have bow and stern bulwarks trimmed back to open up space for a double-wide vehicle ramp to land on the deck in October-November '11. The East Denman and Hornby terminals received extensive upgrading of their marine structures, including wider loading ramps.
I wonder if that means the ability to load two lanes at a time, which seems a bit odd on a little three lane ferry, but I suppose it would be helpful when the boat is shuttling, as it does for a good part of the summer. Could cut the round trip time from about 40 minutes to 30.

Kahloke (ex Grassy Point Park, ex City of Chemainus, ex Thetis Queen) as seen by me on February 4, 2012. - I'm at the ferry terminal at Gravelly Bay on Denman Island, watching the K-Barge arrive from Hornby. With Hornby's Shingle Spit terminal in the background New dock structures at Shingle Spit are shown Looking up Lambert Channel, with both docks visible Dragging her rubber bumper behind her Arrival at Gravelly Bay on Denman Island - a soft landing (with hundreds of sailings each day, we can expect the occasional soft-landing)

Another Kahloke set from my February 4, 2012 trip to Denman Island. - my vantage point is a nice sandstone beach, just below a wooded-part of East Road. (I'm sure that Neil knows where I'm talkiing about....) Kahloke headed from Gravelly Bay to Shingle Spit (Denman to Hornby) Lambert Channel view Lambert Channel Queen Nearing Ford Cove on Hornby, where a ferry or steamship dock used to be.

Nearing Ford's Cove on Hornby, where a ferry or steamship dock used to be. Is that a wind turbine on the left centre of the photo? A few of these could enable the Gulf Islands to generate some of their own power, and give them some security when they loose undersea power feeds from the mainland or other islands. Then again some people think they look bad, might cause health issues and are generally undesirable.

Then again some people think they look bad, might cause health issues and are generally undesirable. The turbine is on the Ford Cove Resort property, the operators of the store and the cabins. Any time I've been down there, I haven't seen it operating, but perhaps it only goes in really windy conditions.
