I just watched and recorded 2 huge long tall trucks crash into the platform vehicle decks of the Queen of Cumberland and broke everything Wow, I'd be interested in seeing that video for sure

I just watched and recorded 2 huge long tall trucks crash into the platform vehicle deck of the Queen of Cumberland and broke it It really doesn’t seem to be affecting her in anyway with no cancellations except to get RAD fixed tonight.

Here is my video of Queen of Cumberland's loading problems with 2 oversize load trucks at Earls Cove, from today. The delay was around 30-45 minutes Oh my, what a gong show. Numerous calls to "hey, stop. hey, stop" with no response. I noted that the clearance heights are marked above each side of the car deck. Congratulations Ollie, on a soon-to-be viral video. You were definitely in the right place at the right time.

The inactions of the drivers (almost) border on criminal behaviour!

Great video! Never seen something like that happen before on the ferry. Reminds me of the 8 foot 11 bridge channel!

So, how did they get that over there in the first place?

So, how did they get that over there in the first place? Probably from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale

Excellent video capture. I wonder what their other travel options were after the fact? If they wanted to use the ferries, I guess they would have had to backtrack to Horseshoe Bay, then catch a ferry to Nanaimo, drive up to Comox, and catch Salish Orca to Powell River. I looked up main deck clearances on the various Sunshine Coast vessels. Queen of Cumberland has a 4.39m (14.4') clearance. If Malaspina Sky had been back on the route, it has a max. vehicle clearance of 4.45m (14.6'), so it seems Route 7 would have been a no-go regardless of which ship was operating. Salish Orca has a clearance of 4.75m (15.6'), so that is likely the only viable ferry option. Someone didn't do their homework.

First a truck gets stuck on a tidal hump between the trestle and the vessel (hey, that rhymes!) and now this. I've often been critical, or at least curious, about the need to do 'dock fits' when they shift vessels around, but I guess this points out a necessary aspect of that that I didn't think of. From the video, it looked like things were just inches too tight when the truck struck the retracted deck. Maybe they need some kind of laser height monitor, no doubt to be installed for an obscene cost.

Would not be the first time that trick was used ...
I wonder if the retractable decks were up as tight as they can get them?

I don't understand what the issue was on the first truck on the port side - he pulled all the way into the tunnel? Obviously, when a truck rolls up to the tollbooth placarded as an oversized load, someone should be getting out and measuring the height. They'll do it at WSF terminals.

I don't think Earls Cove has a toll booth because you don't have to pay to ride on that side. You pay in Horseshoe Bay or Saltery Bay, right? That said, they could still have a max. height gantry at the entry to the holding lanes; if you're taller than this sign, you aint gettin' on!

Google confirms no toll booth. Presumably one of the deckhands has to head out into the parking lot and see what's waiting to figure out how to load. There is a waiting room building and what looks like a utility building that they could store a measuring stick in. I'd certainly want to confirm a placarded oversized load would fit.

The two time I have been on Salty Bay to Earls Cove in summer a BC Ferries employee was directing traffic before the vessel arrived at the terminal.

How often are platforms decks being used on Queen of Cumberland after taking over route 5A?

When was Queen of Cumberland last painted? The rusted seemed to be removed from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay before taking over Swartz Bay to Southern Gulf Islands from Salish Heron.

This delay is probably similar to the amount of time it would take if they ever used both ramps with full heavy traffic on a holiday weekend. (I know they dont ever really use both ramps at the same time and they hardly ever them in general anymore)
