Howe Sound Queen photo from sometime before the mid-1980's. Photo is from a 1980s era coffee-table book “Vancouver & British Columbia” which appears to be a gift-book aimed at tourists to Vancouver and BC. Not much is noted in the book regarding publisher info. “Coombie Books” from 1987, with illustrations & text by “Colour Library Books Ltd.” No photo credits mentioned. I purchased this book for $2 at our local Rotary club sale, for the very purpose of posting these types of photos here, to show a bit from that era. =====================

Howe Sound Queen en route to Bowen Island from Horseshoe Bay - late August 1985. When new to BC Ferries this vessel served on the Bowen Island run, hence her name... Note that the Expo livery change had not yet come to the whole fleet. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr

This page from Bowen Island Museum & Archives shows the Howe Sound Queen as she was when she came to BC for the Bowen run.

That's a gem. The half-superstructure look is something I've read about, but not seen until now. Here's a direct link to this particular photo. HSQ with only 1/2 a superstructure - LINK

I actually the HSQ looked better in that configuration. Kind of like a super-sized Mill Bay. Her original Quebec run obviously had very little in the way of foot passengers.

bowenislandmuseum.ca/?s=ferry How long did that last before modification? Not long at all; a few months, I gather. See page 3 of this thread & an entry from 'Ferryman' that includes info drawn from the booklet Queens of British Columbia (Favelle).

Thanks for sharing that - in my attempts to learn more about the ferries in our fleet I have had the most problems with this little pesky vessel. Not a lot seems to survive from her Eastern days!.

An under-appreciated workhorse for years, I must say the HSQ has the worst passenger lounge area in the entire fleet. No view if you're sitting down, and what an insane layout. Good views from outside decks, however.

This Week: My first ever walkthrough of the Howe Sound Queen. And this week: a little friendly competition... Hey friend, is there some sort of problem? This is the second post you've made of this nature. Please do your own walkthroughs in peace. I don't find that there's much to compare anyway.

The Howe Hound must be basking in the attention. Who knew that her design was such that people might be vying to be the best chronicler of her excellence? Boy, I must have missed something.

Good views from outside decks, however. 'Curtis's' video certainly shows why the 'HSQ' justly deserves your comments re: viewing from the passenger lounge. Good grief, what would it take to do a little bit of steel cutting to make those windows large enough so that viewing would be possible from a seated position?...duh

It seems I have crossed a line, for which I apologize. There are many people doing these types of videos; surely you can see where it may feel a little competitive. I will, in future, avoid posts of that nature.

Howe Sound Queen en route from Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island - 28 August 1974. The Bowen Island route was the first assignment for this vessel with BC Ferries. Hence, its name ... © WCK-JST - Fujichrome 74-13-16 by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Here's a couple videos of the Mr. Hockey Sound Queen arriving back on the Vesuvius route, after a short refit.
- coming up from Fulford, via Sansum Narrows
- and then later, seen from onboard Quinitsa

I'm wondering if anyone has heard about the HSQ in terms of refit or retirement?

I'm wondering if anyone has heard about the HSQ in terms of refit or retirement? She's in the queue for retirement in the next few years, once the 2 new "Minor 44" vessels are completed. See this thread: HERE
