I took a ride on the Salish Raven yesterday from Swartz Bay to Mayne Island via Pender (then on to Tsawwassen on the Heron). I know it's been a while now but I still find it unusual to have the route 5 vessel offering both a cafeteria and a gift shop. It must pay off for them though...there were quite a few people buying the non-White Spot burgers (myself included) and while I was sitting near the cashier he processed 2 gift shop sales each in the $100 to $150 range. They seem to manage fine even even using minimal staff...there's just 1 person on the steamtable and 1 person in the galley.

No question, it's efficient to have one cashier for the cafeteria and gift shop. But on morning Tsawwassen departures, I find it really frustrating how long the lineup is for food. They've stretched their staff and the service window as much as they possibly can, and it can be a really crappy experience. I've also found that on evening sailings back from the Gulf Islands, the food available can be just about non-existent for people who don't want burgers. But then, there can be the WSF sailings with popcorn and hotdogs, so... everything is relative...

Finally got to experience one of the Rementowa ships (Salish Raven) yesterday, and must say I was rather underwhelmed. The lower car deck seems rather odd, and it seemed unusually slow for a ship its size. Decent outside decks provide good views, but I much prefer Malaspina Sky's design, and would have rather seen more of those ships built by our local shipyards.

Five Sky class vessels would work better for their goal of fleet standardization too.
