Here is my video of Queen of Cumberland's loading problems with 2 oversize load trucks at Earls Cove, from today. The delay was around 30-45 minutes Oh my, what a gong show. Numerous calls to "hey, stop. hey, stop" with no response. I noted that the clearance heights are marked above each side of the car deck. Congratulations Ollie, on a soon-to-be viral video. You were definitely in the right place at the right time.

Tomorrow, March 22nd, is the 17th anniversary of the loss of Queen of the North. March 22, 2006. I was able to travel on her, on 3 routes: - Route 2 from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, as Queen of Surrey, in 1974 or 1975 (see photo below). - Inside Passage northbound in 2004 - Repositioning trip from Port Hardy to Tsawwassen in October 2005. (see photo below) My father took this photo, in the mid 1970s. Apparently BC Ferries had a problem at Earls Cove yesterday. A big truck got stuck on the loading ramp leading to the cancellation of sailings until the tide changed enough to get the truck unstuck. I do not know if the Queen of Cumberland currently being on that route complicated the situation, but I think that they might have been using the secondary berth. The news report says nothing about that. I believe that the 2nd berth (the old one) at Earls Cove was removed, a couple of years ago, or less.

Here's another item from that report, explaining very high turnover in the Human Resources department, the very department tasked with solving all the other departments' people shortages: Yikes.

Thanks for this. All sorts of good nuggets of information, especially on upcoming projects (possible tug-&-barge for commercial traffic on major routes, expediting the mid-life refit for Northern Adventure, etc).

No I meant are there any pictures of the queen of new westminster's engine room.. L.L.Mike, there are two ways you could read this. 1. Your cheeky comment produced a more precise post. 2. Satirical, gently sarcastic comments don't always register... and that's not necessarily your fault. I'm intrigued by the compression of the written language. New Westminster becomes New West, then perhaps New-West, then perhaps Newwest, and then loses that 2nd (or 1st) "w" to become simply newest. And when the original words become a different word with different meanings, then the transformation process is complete with the newest and latest abbreviation. As for me, I struggle with reading compressed written language, particularly on platforms that encourage the elimination of spaces between characters, such as on Instagram. It's not that I'm annoyed by it, it's simply that I struggle to read it. I find that spaces, commas to separate thoughts, and paragraph breaks (to let me read it a bit at a time) all combine to allow me a chance to comprehend what has been written. Even then, 11 times out of 10, I will comprehend it incorrectly, the first time. And if words have multiple meanings, I will choose the wrong one, 9 times out of 8.

Does anybody have pictures of the queen of newest engine room? The newest most recently built Queen in the fleet would be the Skeena Queen.

Stella Float 50.563231, -126.275362 Thanks for the coordinates. From the Google Maps satellite view of that West Cracroft Island location, it looks to me like Nimpkish is moored next to the Mill Bay. Stella Float 50.563231, -126.275362 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

The tree-cutting work at Gravelly Bay (Denman Island) ferry terminal is scheduled to start on Monday February 13 2023.
(see 2 posts previous in this thread for a link to the project plan)
Hornby & Denman people held another protest there today, and I expect there will be "people up in the trees" on Monday, preventing the contractors from doing their work.
It should make for great TV news and even greater social media hyperbole. Think cable-ferry outrage, but way more outrage.

Here is the final episode (Ep.5) in my video series of a trip to Hornby Island.
This is my return trip, from Shingle Spit (Hornby Island), to and across Denman Island, and then the cable barge to Buckley Bay.
The trip itself was a work trip and I enjoyed videoing my journey to and from my work destination. The video editing afterwards was a lot of fun and good learning as I finally started trying new things on my editing software (VideoPad) including my first double-audio overlay.
A previous episode (Ep.2) featured my morning outbound drive across Denman Island, where I took the alternate road route of Lacon & McFarlane. I got to experience some "Island Culture" afterwards when posting this video to a Hornby Island facebook group, and getting accused of promoting reckless speeding down a quiet country road. It was evident that some vocal Facebookers on Denman and Hornby didn't understand the fun & simple concept of a YouTube travel & driving vlog.
Those community comments motivated some of my voice-over comments in this Episode #5 where I compare tourist ferry traffic on Denman Island to what it might have been like driving from West Berlin to West Germany in the Cold War era.

Salish Orca must be sailing a storm course... she's headed to Little River at 9:48, but is well south of her usual route. Aha, the Westview - Gillies Bay - Little River route. Those storm courses are interesting to observe, and interesting in the simple geometry of angles.

When I recently visited Hornby Island (from Nanaimo), I recorded video of my journey. I enjoy making travel videos, in a nerdy documentary style. 🙂
Here is Episode 1 of my "T2HDI" Series, which means "Trip to Hornby & Denman Islands." I decided to use a series acronym, just for fun. This first episode goes from Highway 19 near Tsable River to the solid ground at Denman West. The cable-barge features prominently in this episode, so this is the thread to post into.

Seven years ago, this type of video might need a warning to "Consider the Children" before viewing this video, because of the multiple triggers of seeing a cable ferry in action.
But now, although not yet fully loved by the locals, the mention of the BSC doesn't seem so trauma-inducing. This is likely because the islanders' attention is currently captivated by twin terrors of a 5G cable project (not a 5G cable-ferry) and a proposed height-increase to a Rogers cell tower.
Here is an on-board video of the Baynes Sound Connector, showing her (its?) departure from Denmanye West.

I enjoy movie-making, and a ferry trip is a good opportunity for that hobby.
On December 30, 2022 I travelled from Port McNeill on Vancouver Island to Sointula on Malcolm Island, and return.
My ferry was the Island Aurora.
I had fun....

Steve Wallis is a you tuber who does 'stealth camping' videos, and regular camping videos. He shares personal stuff as well, as in losing his wife last year. Seems like a really nice guy, and he makes fun videos. I'm a big fan of Steve Wallis, and his work. Thanks for sharing this here. Now it's time for me to enjoy a Step #2.

Hmmm. My client who lives there sued to complain about them all the time. Had some colourful name for them that will not be repeated here. What does "...sued to complain about them" even mean? And we were wondering about your suggestion that the Bowen vessel used to overnight at Snug Cove, which you haven't responded to. It's a Paul typo. "sued" instead of "used." flipped letters. But in this case, the "sued" makes it look like a really odd statement. I'm sure that Paul might have a chuckle over that one. We'll give him a Yellow-Card.

Has the Celebration always had the decal of the women's hockey team on the side or is that new? The decals haven't changed since they were applied at the Flensburger Shipyard, after the ship was launched and deckhouses fitted. Here's a naked view HERE

Imagine the coastals when they go under mlu what they will look like during mlu. I am imagining them in a drydock, with lots of wood blocks and tarps. I am also imagining welders sparks and scaffolding and hardhats. I'm also imagining no countries; it isn't hard to do.

The December Western Mariner reports that in October, the 322' Trailer Princess, (1944 Bethlehem Steel), which sunk back in February of this year in Duncan Bay near Campbell River, was raised by the Freshwater Group's heavy lift submersible, and taken to the Amix facility, again near Campbell River, for dismantling. Thanks for this update. I remember reading books on BC coastal shipping history and seeing photos of Trailer Princess, and then realizing that ships like Carrier Princess weren't quite a new idea. The simplicity of Trailer Princess always impressed me.

Absolutely agree on not keeping geriatric boats around. Have to admit, though, that while I celebrate a newer and larger capacity fleet, it's not 'fun' to be going to such a uniform fleet... from a fan perspective. Route 5 without the Mayne Queen is almost as odd as the World Cup without the Azzurri. Something's missing....
